I think it's time to start the official iPhone version 5 thread. Various reports are popping up on possible release dates, hardware, etc. So, let the rumors (and some facts eventually) begin!
P.S. Personally I predict it will get announced this summer and ship this fall.
Like clockwork, Reuters has added to the tally of fifth-generation iPhone rumors. Citing three anonymous sources "with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain," Reuters claims Apple's fifth-generation iPhone will have a faster processor, and begin shipping in September.
That means mass production of the phone would have to start no later than August, with an announcement likely to come at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
(By the way, Reuters is fast becoming a regular contributor to the Apple rumor mill; recently it has weighed in on the white iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPad 3.)
Reuters' report is the latest in a series of rumors about the release date of Apple's next iPhone. Most rumors about the fifth-generation iPhone have focused on when the official announcement and launch date will be, which may face delays caused by the Japanese crisis.
In case you haven't been paying close attention, here's every what various sources have reported about fifth-generation iPhone in the last few months:
On Monday, an analyst from Concord Securities told investors he had heard from unnamed suppliers that the fifth-generation iPhone will only start mass production in September, and come equipped with a faster A5 processor, improved antenna, 8-megapixel rear camera, and Qualcomm baseband. A week before that, Avian Securities also told its investors that Apple won't begin production until September, pushing back an iPhone 5 launch date to the end of 2011 or early 2012.
From Asia, Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes added a fresh angle, citing anonymous touch panel suppliers who claimed that Apple won't release the fifth-generation iPhone this summer because demand for the iPhone 4 has been too strong. Parts shipments have also remained constant, and Apple hasn't given manufacturers a timeframe for when production of the iPhone 4 will wind down.
Meanwhile South Korea-based ETNews reported last week that unnamed "industry officials" had "confirmed" a June release date for the iPhone, with South Korean carriers KT and SK Telecom starting sales by the end of June.
At the end of March, Japanese-language blog Macotakara.jp reported that Apple was pushing the fifth-generation iPhone release to the fall due to delays caused by the earthquake.
As for the older rumors, Forbes reported last month that Apple will enable mobile payments by embedding near-field communications technology in the fifth-generation iPhone. Then there's another batch of reports claiming the fifth-generation iPhone will come with an 8-megapixel camera supplied by Sony, which recently made CEO Howard Stringer roll his eyes.

From what I've heard (mostly from my sound-alike Tom Merritt on TNT) the iPhone 5 looks to be a jump similar to the 3G -> 3GS jump. Better CPU (the A5 in the iPad 2), better camera, etc. It promises to be a minor jump.
I love it that they feel obliged to let us know iPhone 5 will have a "faster processor"! Not exactly a stretch is it? Lol
I agree it's likely to be released last quarter now.
The only major improvement I want to see is support for LTE 4G so that we get the faster network from AT&T/Verizon. Without that I am staying with the 3GS. Having the A5 and an 8mp camera would be great but not worth upgrading phones for me and Christi.
So we shall see. If they delay until September, that is fine with me. It gives me time to save up! :D
Our morning research included this from Thomson-Reuters news wire:
Apple Inc. (AAPL). The company's next-generation iPhone will have a faster processor and will begin shipping in September, three people with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain said. The production of the new iPhone will start in July/August and the smart phone will look largely similar to the iPhone 4, one of the people said on Wednesday.

Idk, some rumors seem to think that it won't have LTE due to the battery drain associated with the technology. But maybe it will, time will tell.

My plan is to wait for iPhone 6 or whatever, since all signs point to only an incremental jump in the next version. My current contract is up in a year, so I think that the upgrade will be more satisfying and feature rich in Fall 2012. Hopefully my 3GS is on board with my plan and lasts another 18 months or so.

The main issue I had with my 3G was the battery, it wouldn't last the day (or even half the day if I was using my phone to any reasonable degree). That's what prompted me to upgrade to a 4. If your battery lasts you should be good for another gen.
I know what you mean. Generally the amount I use my iPhone has decreased since I started carrying my iPad around with me and use that for the more battery draining features like games and movies, but even with just using the phone as a phone and iPod gets me to around 30% by the end of the day. Last summer I took my iPhone on a four day camping trip and even shutting off everything I knew of that affected battery life the phone was a brick after day two.
September would be good - my contract is up the end of May - and I can hang with my 3Gs for a few months. I want better battery life, and would really love a 64GB model - I am always filling up my 32GB 3Gs. '4G' would also be nice - but not critical from my perspective. Would I would love to see is a mini-USB connector - or space for a microSSD.
Any rumors of an antenna redesign?
Pete - See my first post - it mentions an antenna change. ;)

I think we will see a mini-USB connector, as the US...FCC?...is forcing all phone developers (this year I believe) to switch to one universal standard which is that connector. So I'd guess we will see it on the iPhone 5. which its about time phones switched to one standard.

I have a feeling Apple will find a way to maintain the dock connector, perhaps they can classify the iPhone as a 'mobile media platform' and not just a phone.

The article I read months ago, named Apple specifically in the list of companies being forced to comply to the new regulation. I doubt apple could BS out of it as it's primary features is the phone, as half the device is devoted to it.
The iPod touch and iPad won't switch though, that's fairly predictable.

It seems reasonable. The tapering to the bottom reminds me of a Macbook Air, minimizing the bezel, etc.
No. You can't even hope to fit a decent antenna in something that small. That's more like iPhone 10. There is no way they are going to fit everything the iPhone 4 has into that.

Yeah it's possible, I mean look at your car, the metal frame is the majority of the AM radio antenna (or so I am led to believe). Hopefully such a move won't increase problems with signal attenuation.
The mockup is based on supplier parts that are floating around lending creadance to thus being accurate. They go into in on the Maccast.
Hmm, ok didn't think about that...still skeptical they can fit all the hardware into that small of a package and make it work. The camera, gps, gyro all that stuff but I guess if anyone can do it, it's Apple.

The bulk of the iPhone 4 internals are taken up by battery IIRC.
That image certainly doesn't fit with the other rumour of minor incremental change from the 4.

That's what was bugging me. Many rumors are pointing at this being a iPhone 4S, not an actual 5. Similar to the 3G-3GS transition.
King
oh gosh not another one! :o
Cosmetic changes are just that - cosmetic. If the hardware inside doesn't change greatly I can still see this as an "incremental" change. I guess it all depends on how you define it. Personally I don't see why they play with labels like 3G, then 3GS, then 4, etc. I think consumers think more linear, phone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. I mean, we don't get movie sequels in half numbers. "Fast & Furious 4.5" - only a little different from FF4. LOL! ;)

I guess I'm falling into that trap only because the 3GS had the same form factor as the 3G so I'm taking that as a standard attribute of an 'S' upgrade.
I'm with you, I detest the naming conventions that have grown up around these things.

You can get grandfathered in, you just can't get tethering and unlimited data at the same time. And as far as I'm aware, you should get a subsidized price. :)

1. Most likely not, the pricing is fairly stable. Will you get "more" for your money (more storage, better hardware), sure.
2. An unobtrusive case will solve any signal attenuation issues you may experience. Personally I never experienced it even purposefully trying to kill the signal.

Short of 2nd hand, no. They will only bring it down in price when the next gen comes out. Like they did with the 3GS.
As for the signal thing, it is overblown. Very few iPhone's actually suffered from the problem. And it's easily fixed with a case if you actually find a problem with that. I have more problems with buildings with metal roofing than the squeeze-of-death ;)

Yes, flash is on the iPhone 4 and it is pretty close to the lens.

iPhone 4S Arriving This Fall With More Carriers?
By Darrell Etherington May. 13, 2011, 12:45pm PT 12 Comments
Apple's next iPhone will be called the 4S, and won't offer much beyond minor cosmetic changes, better front and back cameras, an A5 dual-core processor and HSPA+ support, according to Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek (via Forbes ). The information comes from industry checks performed by the investment banking firm.
Apple is also likely to announce Sprint, T-Mobile and China Mobile as new carrier partners, according to Misek's research note. T-Mobile expansion is already expected if the AT&T / T-Mobile merger goes through. The addition of Sprint would mean Apple's reach would extend to all major U.S. carriers, and China Mobile signing on would mean that the iPhone would become available to over 600 million potential subscribers.
While analyst expectations are not always the most dependable source of information, this report is in keeping with what we've been hearing about Apple's next iPhone revision. Rumors abound that we won't see any new hardware introduced at WWDC this June, and fall has been widely cited as the most likely candidate for an iPhone update. The iPhone "4s" name has also surfaced before, back in April when it was used to describe a prototype handset being circulated by Apple among developers with an A5 chip for use in creating next-gen games. Supplier checks also often reveal clues about future Apple products, since the third-party supply chain isn't as easily guarded as Apple itself.
Misek also claims that LTE chipsets from Qualcomm aren't yet ready for mass production of the next iPhone, so we won't see LTE support in the next hardware revision.
Take this report with a grain of salt, but if Apple decides to repeat what it did with the iPhone 3G and 3GS with the iPhone 4 and its successor, this does match with what I'd expect to see from a hardware update. What do you think about this latest next-gen iPhone rumor?
http://gigaom.com/apple/iphone-4s-arriving-this-fall-with-more-carriers/ (http://gigaom.com/apple/iphone-4s-arriving-this-fall-with-more-carriers/)
I find the carrier rumor interesting, but it would be nice. Sprint unlimited network with an iPhone? Nice.
I think it's a strong chance it will be a 4S...but a 5 is possible too.
King
All the networks now cater for the iPhone over here, but there's not much in the way of competition on tariffs, but the update makes sense. Tide us over till the 5 is released
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/18/digitimes-lte-iphone-in-2012-apple-lowering-iphone-4-orders/ (http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/18/digitimes-lte-iphone-in-2012-apple-lowering-iphone-4-orders/)
Digitimes reports that Apple has lowered its iPhone 4 shipment volume for calendar Q2 2011 in anticipation of slower sales as the company prepares to unveil a new iPhone in September. Digitimes says supply chain makers have confirmed Apple has lowered iPhone 4 shipments from 20 million units down to 17.5-18 million units. Of those, 16 million units will be the GSM version, while 1.5-2 million units will be the CDMA version.
In a second report, Digitimes says Apple is unlikely to unveil an LTE-equipped iPhone before 2012. This isn't really new; there have been numerous reports that LTE chipsets aren't currently made small enough to fit in the iPhone's form factor, and even if they were, they aren't available in the quantity Apple would need to satiate consumer demand for the next iPhone.
So basically, if your looking for LTE in the next iPhone, don't count on it. Personally, not surprised. Also, don't care. I don't need to pay more to the carriers for my phone thank you very much...and the LTE service is still limited anyway.
King
Just read an interesting story to the effect that Apple filed for a patent for a technology that will automatically disable the iPhone camera when it senses that a user is attempting to film a live concert or sporting event. Aparrently it involves some type of infrared sensor that, when detected, automatically shuts off the camera functionality. This would have to be used in conjunction with an arena or performer that utilizes the tech themselves for the phone to recognize.
Although this could be quite a ways off, I imagine many users will not be thrilled with their camera phones being disabled by "big brother" without their control.

Bryan you posted other times that you saw no need for higher resolution. I've been hoping and preaching for higher res. since iPad 1. Anyway, sorry to clog the iPhone thread with iPad talk. But it all kind of blends together.
I said no need for the 2nd gen. This is what I said regarding iPad 3. I agreed with you in the above post. Go back and read it. You wanted high res for iPad2. I suggested what they needed was the camera and a fast browser while keeping the price point the same in the face of the new pads coming out at the time, that high res wasn't what consumers were looking for in iPad 2. Go back and read the thread, it's all there. Or just read the quote above. You said you would bet iPad 3 would have high res and I said I wouldn't take that bet, meaning I agreed.

Rumor: Suppliers preparing for October launch of Apple's iPhone 5, iPad 3
By Katie Marsal
Published: 10:00 AM EST
Apple's component suppliers in Taiwan are gearing up and preparing materials for the production of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, set to hit the market in October, according to a new report.
Citing sources in Apple's supply chain, DigiTimes reported on Friday that the fifth-generation iPhone and third-generation iPad will debut in September, and go on sale in October. It was said that Apple will only launch one new iPhone model, while the iPad 3 was just recently added to production schedule.
"Apple is considering designing an even thinner and lighter tablet PC with its panel resolution increasing to 250dpi," the report said. No details on what the next iPhone might feature were given.
Apple is expected to produce between 6 million and 7 million iPhone 5 units in the third quarter, and with the iPhone 4, total shipments will reach 24 million to 25 million units. And with the supposed launch of a third-generation iPad, total iPad sales could crack 40 million in 2011.
Named in the report are suppliers Simplo Technologies and Dynapack International Technology as battery suppliers; TPK Holding and Wintek for touch panels; Catcher supplying chassis; and Largan Precision providing cameras. As usual the devices will be assembled by Foxconn.
While a fifth-generation iPhone is widely expected to launch later this year, rumors of a third-generation iPad launching as well are not new, but still surprising. The iPad 2 launched in March, and Apple even appeared to downplay rumors of a new iPad arriving this year by declaring 2011 the "Year of iPad 2."
Friday's news contradicts a report from earlier this week that pegged a so-called "iPad 3" launch in 2012. FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger said his supply chain sources indicated a prototype iPad 3 would be made early next year.
And Apple has even struggled to meet demand for the iPad 2 since it went on sale earlier this year. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said crushing demand for the second-generation tablet created "the mother of all backlogs" for Apple.

I agree with Rick, I don't think it is coming in October, they still haven't managed to meet demand with the iPad 2.

Oh yeah, iPhone 5 will be out this year, that I'm sure of, but iPad 3? Not likely.

I read some rumors about a new form factor that will be 'tear drop shaped'. That doesn't sound too plausible to me. They'll have to do a retool of the case design to address the antenna issues. The contract is up on my 3Gs - so I am ready for a new version.
Not a big shocker here, but there are predictions that the next iPhone may be available on all the major carriers here in the US when it launches. Makes sense to me.

Doubtful. You seriously think that HTC will put Apple out of the smartphone market? No way.
The biggest competition to Apple seems to be Samsung lately, the Galaxy S2 is a great phone. Does this mean Samsung will put Apple out of the market? no way, Can Apple put Samsung or HTC out of the market? Unlikely. Stating opinions as facts do not make them true.
At this point, unless one of them comes up with something completely revolutionary, they'll keep their own market segments. I think there's room for Apple, Samsung and HTC in the smartphone arena. But to say HTC will push Apple out...uh huh. I think that I'm a pretty good example of the typical Apple fan. I purchased my iPhone 4 the day they came out. Lately it's been running slow, glitching, stuff like that, but you know what? I'm still loving the product. My point is that it doesn't really matter HOW fancy HTC, or Samsung, or ANYONE makes their product, even the flipping Flash issue, if you like the iPhone and Apple products, you're sticking with them. Same with the other companies. We could debate this ad nauseum, but the plain truth of the matter is age-old: I like what I like, you like what you like, and not much will ever change that...my 2 cents.
yup! Frankly I've probably spent at least a hundred or so dollars (and most likely more) on the app store. That's an investment I won't easily walk away from just to repurchase what basically amounts to the same apps on Android or WP7.

I am not LOYAL to any company. It is just technology to me.

I rarely have ever bought a product based on specs, but rather the experience I'm going to get out of the product. A 1.2 GHz dual-core processor is useless if you don't have the apps for it. At least you went with HTC and not Motorola...who seems to have issues selling decent Droid models here lately. HTC is actually a good company from my point of view and seems to "get" droid.

I may not buy a product only on specs but I almost always have minimum specs that must be met. I don't know what is meant by "COMPUTING EXPERIENCE". It sounds like some subjective human emotionalism to me.
Very Un-Vulcan. :shootgun:
I ran Google Sky Map on it right next to a myTouch 4G. I was intending to get a myTouch but I procrastinated so long the Sensation came out. Actually I think the dual-core 1.2 GHz is overkill but considering the cost of the contract anyway the price difference is negligible. Brand and company loyalty are un-professional. And I am a former IBMer. LOL

I don't understand this statement at all. Specs are what defines what a product can do and the limits that it can reach. It's like buying a car with a two cylinder engine because it looks nice and can go to the corner store. Unfortunately, you sort of needed the car for driving to work and it's down the highway and you can't get over 35mph.
It's far better to have and not need than to need and not have. 1.2 might be useless to you, but what about tomorrow when something is designed that pushes the need for greater performance?
Specs are what push the evolution of technology. If it's only about the pretty box, we'd still be playing games on Atari. We're not because consumers see the specs and then when something comes out, we see greater potential and they step up their game. Then the first company makes their product better to compete with the competition.
The best part is that companies that have nothing to hide will broadcast those specs and make them stand out on the packaging.
I just don't understand how specs don't matter, especially in computing devices when they are the only thing that does matter. Specs are the very core to programmers and what they can and can't do on a given platform.
I see I missed the word: solely. So that sentence should say:
"I rarely have ever bought a product solely based on specs".
And I don't disagree with you X. To put this in another way, according to many, the specs and capabilities of the PS3 far outweigh the XBOX360. Does that make the PS3 a better system? Not really, considering the amount of >exclusive< titles that are not on the PS3.
I am not saying that specs are bad, but if you bought a new phone purely because it has a dual-core processor and ignored everything else like apps or what not, then I find that a bit silly. To use your car analogy, it would be like buying a super-powerful V6 with a frame, nothing else.

I would be amazed if Apple let 2011 go by with no new iPhone this year. Not that the iPhone 4 is a bad phone, (it's still great after a year of usage), but compared to the Droids sporting dual core CPUs and such, it is looking a little dated.
Plus, Apple needs something to keep the Apple geeks talking ;)

There's a story around that the iPhone 4 is getting a price cut very soon. This certainly adds to the idea of an iPhone 5 in early September.
Let the speculation begin! It may not be a sign of an iPhone refresh, but we've received multiple tips today about an imminent price drop for Apple's flagship smartphone. According to a pair of trusty tipsters, Radio Shack is prepping to cut the cost of AT&T's 16GB iPhone 4 to $169.99, with a two-year contract, from $199.99. The 32GB version will likewise take a $30 plunge at the Shack, ringing in at $269.99, and the price of the 8GB 3GS will drop to $19.99. Phone Arena is likewise reporting on Target slicing up the old Apple price tag, but lists varying numbers based on carrier. If all this talk turns out to be true, those prices should be ripe for the picking starting tomorrow.

The rumour mill continues to churn, potential good news for folks wanting LTE. With my recent iOS fiddling I get where they found this info within the phone's files:
QuoteApple's iPhone 5 is set to be unveiled in the next month or so, though no one quite knows what the device will feature thanks to the ongoing flood of rumors. Sure, we have a pretty good idea of what it will look like, though one technology we've repeatedly seen requested is LTE support for 4G networks across the globe. While we can't confirm that the upcoming fifth-generation iPhone will be able to support 4G LTE, we can now exclusively confirm that Apple's carrier partners are testing iPhone models with LTE capability. BGR has obtained evidence of an internal iOS test build from one of Apple's major carrier partners, and buried in the firmware is a property list (.plist file) for LTE. This doesn't necessarily mean every Apple device that's about to be released will feature an embedded 4G LTE modem, but it certainly means Apple isn't sitting on the sidelines as 4G LTE networks continue to roll out around the world. Plus, when Apple finally does make a 4G LTE device, the battery might actually last longer than a few hours. Check out our photo gallery for images of Apple's LTE plist file.

Man, you guys were cutting edge. I think I got my first cell via work in about 2004 or so. I think I've had three cell phones in my life. And the first two were work issued ones.
I remember my dad having an old Nokia brick around earl mid 90's. The phone company hated him. His plan was 30 free minutes per month and then a certain amount per minute. He always swung it so he only used the 30 minutes by always talking on his phone for less then 1 minute at a time (no per second billing at the time). Most months he ended up not paying anything for his phone. He would get weekly calls from Cantel (now Rogers) begging him to change his plan.
That phone passed to me around grade 10, probably 1997-ish.

Facebook will launch its long-awaited iPad app at Apple's iPhone 5 launch event on Oct. 4, Mashable has learned. In addition to the iPad app, Facebook is also expected to release a revamped version of its iPhone app and may unveil an HTML5-based mobile app marketplace.
The Facebook iPad app, which leaked earlier this year, has been in limbo at Facebook for the past few months. That much was made clear in a blog post Monday by former Facebook engineer Jeff Verkoeyen. In that post, he revealed that he left the company (for Google) partially because Facebook has been sitting on the completed app since May.

I'm honestly going to be surprised if there truly is an iPhone 5. I think Apple is overextending that possibility considering that the rumors say:
Bigger screen
4G Speed
More Powerful CPU
More Powerful GPU
and somehow get the same or better battery life. It just doesn't strike me as possible right now...but who knows. But we have Droid models that prove that 4G sucks the life out of batteries faster than ever....

Everyone knows by now that the new phone is indeed the 4S, not the 5. (change the name of this post or start a new one?)
At first glance 4S seems only marginally different than the iPhone 4. Same screen, same display capabilites, and only a very slightly improved battery. The major upgrades are the processor (dual core A5 vs. the A4, someone smarter than me will have to describe the difference here,) the primary camera has been upgraded to 8 megapixels vs. 5 on the 4, and the fact that the 4S will be a "world phone" internally adopting both GSM and CDMA standards. Almost everything else is identical. Alot of time was spent at the conference today touting the new operating system iOS 5, new software apps particularly the voice recognition software called SIRI, and the iCloud service.
Kind of a let down if you ask me, and apparently the market agrees, with Apple stock dipping down around 4% following the end of the conference. I anticipate alot of complaining on the web over the next few months. The new iPhone will be available on 10/14, with pre-orders opening up on 10/7 via the Apple online store.
Who's getting one?
edit to add: Oh one big difference is the new option of 64GB capacity model, available for $399 with a 2 year contract. A little pricey if you ask me. They requisite prrice drops have occurred, with the 8GB iPhone 4 priced at an amazing $99, and the 8GB 3GS still being offered for the new amazing price of FREE (both with 2 yr service contracts)
The stock market is down today, I think Bryan will give us better idea soon.
If I could, I would upgrade. The camera upgrades alone would be worth it. But I've got another year on my contract so I'll just wait for the 5.
A lot of this was to push iCloud, yes, which is a huge upgrade in it of itself. I was amazed by a few things:
No FB mention. This is a big slight to them to have Twitter pushed and nothing about FB.
IPod touch was just given white, was surprised at no A5 mentioned.
I was disappointed in no upgrade for the iPod classic, but at least they aren't killing it either.
King
I think you may continue to be disappointed about the iPod classic, rumour seems to be pointing to it being discontinued in favour of the iPod Touch.
Yeah, it was a great opportunity, I was trying to buy the stock hand over fist during the last hour of trading. As far as what this means, I'll let the analysts do the talking. Also, keep an eye on the enterprise space, IOS is coming on strong as RIM falters.:
As for the stock, Apple shares have staged a decent turnaround going into the close, now down $2.10, or 1%,at $372.50, up from the lowest level of the session of $354.24.
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster this afternoon reiterates an Overweight rating on Apple shares, writing that "the bottom line is that while investors may be disappointed by the lack of a redesigned iPhone, we believe the iPhone 4S will meet or exceed unit expectations, as it represents the first iPhone launch at two major US carriers (Verizon and Sprint) along with KDDI in Japan."
Munster writes that based on a survey his firm conducted in August, there is pent-up demand for an iPhone refresh that should again lead to long lines for the 4S.
RW Baird's William Power reiterates an Outperform rating on the stock, writing that "The iPhone 4S appears to be a solid product, with several meaningful upgrades, though there were no significant upside surprises."
"While today's launch may have proved a bit underwhelming relative to recently growing expectations, we continue to expect solid growth over the next couple of years and view valuation as attractive."
Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities reiterates a Buy rating and a price target of $666, writing, "We would be buyers on any weakness today."
White thinks the 4S's "interesting new or enhanced features [...] should drive a healthy upgrade cycle."
Yeah, I wouldn't mind the touch taking over the classic, but we need more space than 64GBS, something around 150-200GB would be good.
King
If you look at the product cycle so far, this isn't surprising, we can now observe a pattern forming:
original -> 3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S
Being that most people in the US are on 2 year contracts, I think it's reasonable to have a "major" upgrade every two years and an "intermediate" upgrade every other year.

Yeah, i do like that too. Keeps your customers happy while not making it seem like they are losing out.
I've been happy with my 4 so far so I'm looking forward to the 5. Be interesting to see what they do with it.

The biggest thing is I'm just happy Sprint is aboard now. Makes it very tempting for me to get one. I'm not sold on the voice command stuff. It's very hard to do and much of the time you can do things faster without it. Unless you're occupied by driving or something. Anyway, no real surprises at all today.

Agreed on the Sprint thing. I'm hoping Sprint entering the scene will force ATT to back down on their pricing, but that's probably wishful thinking :(.

It's the first time I've come across a combined GSM/CDMA phone. Do others exist?
I'm personally not so fussed about the hardware but the facility to text others with iDevices without using up my network allowance (or paying international texting rates) seems quite attractive. Watch out TSF members with iPhones/iPads, text messages incoming!
What I don't understand is how it knows who's got an iPhone to send text messages using the 'Apple method' rather than via the network. I guess it's the same technology that makes Facetime work (which I've still never tried) and Apple have us all on file somewhere.
AH, OK. I hadn't picked up on that. It's a good move (or would be if I ever went anywhere with a CDMA network!)

Not disappointed at all with the 4s......dual-core processor, much better graphics, more powerful camera, longer battery life, 4G speeds, and Siri voice recognition. So it doesn't say iPHONE 5 on it i'll be ordering one on friday, i am an Apple fanboy since the early 90's and not a new switcher. Having said that this will be my first iPHONE i put off buying one in the past because i have been with Verizon since 96 and i didn't wanna switch to AT&T . But i am sick of the buggy android operating system my droid x2 (on my second replacement) keeps re-booting then won't turn on randomly my wife has the same phone and it does the same thing. Tried factory re-set and everything else but the problems still exists..... the only thing i will miss on the android is the Navigation which is amazing and has helped me out allot. Anyone else buying a 4s

I'm looking forward to seeing what O2 will offer me as my contract has ended and i can upgrade.
Sprint is officially offering unlimited data on the iPhone - at least for now.
Computerworld - Sprint confirmed that it will offer unlimited data plans for the iPhone 4S starting Oct. 14, but it will also sell the iPhone 4 for $99.99 with the iOS 5 upgrade starting today.
The fact Sprint is selling the iPhone 4, and with the latest update of iOS software, came as a shock to many, but also at the lower price of $99.99 announced earlier by Apple.
Many assumed that Sprint would only sell the new iPhone 4S when Verizon Wireless and AT&T also put that device on sale Oct. 14.
"This is the first official announcement of which iPhone devices we will sell," a Sprint spokeswoman said today.....

Well i can attest that facetime is a great tool as i have used to chat with people, they hook up to you via your email similar to heytell. Not tried the testing app yet on my ipad though so cannot comment on that. I'm still far more interested in the new iOS5 features than I am by the new hardware (although if the new features are too sluggish on existing hardware, the new kit will then become a whole lot more tempting :))
I know I've mentioned it all before and thinking of getting an iPhone. I was looking at this all and thinking why not get an iPhone 4 instead of the iPhone 4s. I mean it's much cheaper. My curiosity is how good really is the video and still camera on the 4? And you guys with the 4 will have to let me know how iOS5 works with it, cause really it won't be long before I have an iPhone. A few months at the most I'll be joining your iPhone owners gang.
The 4S has an impressive camera, but just take a look at Instagram posts you've probably seen and a few of Rick and I's videos. That's the quality you can expect out of a iPhone 4 and it's great. :). My biggest issue with the 4's camera is no optical zoom (and digital zoom is....not great) but the 4S does not have optical zoom either so the only way to get it is to spend some money to get lenses that fit on the phone, which aren't cheap.
Still, for point and shooting, it's worked fine for me. Will OFC post thoughts on iOS5 when it comes tomorrow.
King
Face the facts digital zoom always sucks. My photography teacher had a big gripe about it. It was the kind of gripe that you remember.
I figure if I get an iPhone I'd want to use it for Video and Photos a lot on the go. I don't need the newest stuff. I just need something that does the job. But my boss's older iPhone camera really sucks so I didn't want to end of with something like that. I'd be happy with it being pretty good and I need to get a new video and new still cameras too anyway, but for on the go. But I'd like to know what I'm in for with lets face it old technology now.

Stuff like this happens at every launch, if there was a bad production run then Apple will just do a no questions asked exchange at any store. Since they aren't using a new screen (still the same retina display) I don't imagine this will be a widespread problem.
No yellow screen for me mine looks good.

I have noticed this with mine. I was surprised how quicklu I lost battery power after my first charge up. It seems a bit better the past few days, but it does drop off fairly quickly. Because of the way I use my phone it's not a big deal but I will be happy if they kind make a software patch for it.

Does it seems to get warm in your hand with use Bryan?
You know, I don't really have any context to say if it seems warm to me as I never had a smart phone before and I often keep it sitting on my desk while I am fussing with it.
Battery life on my 4 has gone down a touch with iOS 5 but I attribute it to the fact the phone is doing more when it's in standby then it once did.
After playing around a bit more this morning, I would say yes it does get warm after prolonged use.
Apple is reportedly working on the issue with some of its users. Some are blaming it on the fact that many more apps and settings use locations and as such, the GPS is eating the battery life up. And if you really look into the location stuff, there are a lot more apps that can use it too. I've noticed a slightly higher power drain, especially on 3G.
I think the general consensus is, is that its an iOS5 bug(s) causing battery drains.

I guess Samsung is now "demanding" the firmware source code for the iPhone 4s. Wouldn't they need a court order (at least) for that??
KOREAN ELECTRONICS GIANT Samsung is demanding the source code for the Iphone 4S firmware in its latest spat with Apple over patents.
Samsung's legal counsel, Cynthia Cochrane told the Australian federal court that Samsung needs access to the source code in order to assert that Apple is infringing three of its patents relating to wireless 3G, according to Smart Office.
Samsung also wants to see the agreements Apple made with mobile phone carriers Vodafone, Telstra and Optus, which it claims will also affect its case. It is not clear why it needs this information, but it might be attempting to make the point that Apple has made deals with these companies to give it an unfair advantage.
Apple denies it infringed the patents in question, claiming it is using them under the Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory standard, but Samsung maintains that its international agreement with Apple does not extend to Australia and that Apple previously rejected an invitation to license the relevant patents.
Samsung wants sales of the Iphone 4S to be banned in Australia, a tit for tat move in response to the ban of the Galaxy Tab in Germany and an interim ban of the tablet in Australia.
The judge presiding over this case is Justice Annabel Bennett, who issued the interim injunction against the Galaxy Tab last month. It will be interesting to see if she will impose a ban on the Iphone 4S or again side in favour of Apple.
The case is expected to continue on 4 November, when the judge might decide if Samsung's demands are merited or not.

More battery issues reported in this story. Here's an interesting tidbit from the article...
Some blamed Apple's iCloud service while others claim that deactivating Notifications - one of the key features of the 4S - helped restore battery life.
Blogger Oliver Haslam wrote that he solved the problem by turning off the time zone setting function.
He said that, in some cases, the operating system was constantly tracking location in order to adjust the time zone.
"Switching it off may mean that your iPhone will no longer set its own time zone when you travel, but that's a small price to pay for having your iPhone last more than 12 hours on a full charge," he said.
When the iPhone 4S was launched in October, Apple's chief executive Tim Cook promised significantly improved battery life.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15559721 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15559721)
I heard about this a few days ago.
Some people also claim that doing a factory reset of the phone followed by a clean install of everything sorts the issue out. (This is assuming that your 4S was restored from a previous device backup rather than setup as a new phone)
The battery life on my 4s is excellent.... no problems here so far.

Siri is pretty well integrated with the music player last I checked so yes. As far as apps, probably not for a while. iOS 5.1 is said to bring additional functionality to Siri so no doubt we will see continued growth of Siri. As far as other apps, no, due to the sandbox nature of iOS that is not likely to be allowed.

I'f have to check the developer site to see if it hasn't already happened but I'd be surprised if they didn't open up an API to the 'Siri listener'. I think Apple would allow, at the very least, for a developer to define a voice command to launch their app in the main app settings.

Well, that's all that matters then. :)
There are certain things Siri can't do for whatever reason. I heard you can't dictate a tweet even though Twitter is very integrated into ios5.
Well, we should all keep in mind that SIRI is still in it's testing stage. They are constantly working on refining the voice recognition software and it's still considered a Beta test of this application of cloud technology. As such, I think it's amazing what they have actually acheived so far with it and what they will continue to improve upon.
Yeah hopefully when they are happy with it they'll roll out Siri to previous iOS devices that are perfectly capable of running it. :)

You think that the are going to do that? I don't think they will. Siri non-beta will probably be on the 5 when it's released with some justification that the older units can't support the specs. This is giving people a taste and when they bring out the new phone, they are going to use it as a selling point and have millions of people spreading word of mouth on how cool the beta was that it's going to be hard to pass up the real deal.
I hope they bring more to the '5' than that!
Is it only me or is Siri still too gimicky to seem really useful?
While I love the concept of a "Computer, lights" type vocal interface, in reality I'm much more comfortable just pressing a switch.
Perhaps I'm just getting old.

I don't know. I think that when it works (see Kintect voice interface) it's pretty cool. There have been several times now where I couldn't find my remote, but a quick "Xbox pause. rewind. play." has kept me from missing something important. It just has to have more to it than just simple replies to voice queries for me. Then again, I like 3D and one man's enjoyment is another man's fad.
Yeah count me in as very impressed with SIRI and the potential of SIRI.
They probably won't do it stating incompatibility which would be a lie as the hackers have it working on 4's, 3GS iPod touches and iPad 2 already.
It might not be the be all and end all but it is a nice feature to encourage people to upgrade.
If Siri can understand your words, dictate a text, etc. there is no reason I can think of that it couldn't launch apps and things. I think I would find it the most convenient when driving and telling Siri to open some type of maps app or play certain music or call someone, etc. Basically doing things when my hands are tied up.
An update on the SIRI project at Apple:

Could we be getting a real iPhone 5 by June?
Foxconn Factory Video Hints at June Release for iPhone 5

Skeptical about that. I think a fall release fits into their upgrade cycle better. Also the phone is rumored to have a new form factor. Foxcomm is likely gearing up production of the phone in june in anticiaption of a fall release, that would make sense.
Going to agree with Bryan on this one, June seems way too early if they are going to do a new form factor. Hopefully this time, Apple gives a phone with a better battery, not a worse one that the 4S has....

I wonder if it will just be "The new iPhone" instead? Most likely as other iOS devices have lost the numerical naming already.

Hmm....maybe. I think we will have to wait and see.

I'd welcome a new look...the thing I like least about the 4 and 4s is the boxy look to the casing. I much prefer the rounded edges and curved back of my 3GS. I am eligible for an upgrade now, and as much as the 4s is tempting me I think I'm waiting for the next iteration
Looks like someone is trying to hold on to the www.iphone5.com (http://www.iphone5.com) domain name and Apple isn't happy about that. Does this mean the next iPhone will be named: iphone5?

It's possible, maybe even probable but I wouldn't see this as an indicator either way. Knowing how Apple are with the names of things and their rights to the names o things I suspect this is simply 'preventative action' rather than a sign of anything definite.
Registering www.iphone6.com (http://www.iphone6.com) right now.... ;)
