I'm not putting any hopes on rumors at this point.  We're...48 hours from the event.  We'll found out in due time.

I think there will be a few annoyed people if we get a 4S and not a 5 lol

KingIsaacLinksr

I'm honestly going to be surprised if there truly is an iPhone 5.  I think Apple is overextending that possibility considering that the rumors say:

Bigger screen
4G Speed
More Powerful CPU
More Powerful GPU

and somehow get the same or better battery life.  It just doesn't strike me as possible right now...but who knows.  But we have Droid models that prove that 4G sucks the life out of batteries faster than ever....

Does it really matter what the number is or what it's called?  Really??

No, I think what he meant is that if its only a minor upgrade and not a "major" upgrade, that people will likely be annoyed.

Yep that's it. If these specs are right then 4S is the right designation but the rumour mill has had a lot if time to brew with the delays and all the speculation listed more prominent upgrades that would suit the 5 moniker.

You guys should know by now that some people will be annoyed by anything, no matter what it turns out to be.

I guess a German website had this little drop down menu up for a short time already.

Everyone knows by now that the new phone is indeed the 4S, not the 5.  (change the name of this post or start a new one?)

At first glance 4S seems only marginally different than the iPhone 4.  Same screen, same display capabilites, and only a very slightly improved battery.  The major upgrades are the processor (dual core A5 vs. the A4, someone smarter than me will have to describe the difference here,) the primary camera has been upgraded to 8 megapixels vs. 5 on the 4, and the fact that the 4S will be a "world phone" internally adopting both GSM and CDMA standards.  Almost everything else is identical.  Alot of time was spent at the conference today touting the new operating system iOS 5,  new software apps particularly the voice recognition software called SIRI, and the iCloud service.

Kind of a let down if you ask me, and apparently the market agrees, with Apple stock dipping down around 4% following the end of the conference.  I anticipate alot of complaining on the web over the next few months.  The new iPhone will be available on 10/14, with pre-orders opening up on 10/7 via the Apple online store.

Who's getting one?

edit to add:  Oh one big difference is the new option of 64GB capacity model, available for $399 with a 2 year contract.  A little pricey if you ask me.  They requisite prrice drops have occurred, with the 8GB iPhone 4 priced at an amazing $99, and the 8GB 3GS still being offered for the new amazing price of FREE (both with 2 yr service contracts)

The stock market is down today, I think Bryan will give us better idea soon.

If I could, I would upgrade.  The camera upgrades alone would be worth it.  But I've got another year on my contract so I'll just wait for the 5.

A lot of this was to push iCloud, yes, which is a huge upgrade in it of itself.  I was amazed by a few things:

No FB mention.  This is a big slight to them to have Twitter pushed and nothing about FB.
IPod touch was just given white, was surprised at no A5 mentioned.

I was disappointed in no upgrade for the iPod classic, but at least they aren't killing it either.

I think you may continue to be disappointed about the iPod classic, rumour seems to be pointing to it being discontinued in favour of the iPod Touch.

Yeah, it was a great opportunity, I was trying to buy the stock hand over fist during the last hour of trading. As far as what this means, I'll let the analysts do the talking. Also, keep an eye on the enterprise space, IOS is coming on strong as RIM falters.:

As for the stock, Apple shares have staged a decent turnaround going into the close, now down $2.10, or 1%,at $372.50, up from the lowest level of the session of $354.24.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster this afternoon reiterates an Overweight rating on Apple shares, writing that "the bottom line is that while investors may be disappointed by the lack of a redesigned iPhone, we believe the iPhone 4S will meet or exceed unit expectations, as it represents the first iPhone launch at two major US carriers (Verizon and Sprint) along with KDDI in Japan."

Munster writes that based on a survey his firm conducted in August, there is pent-up demand for an iPhone refresh that should again lead to long lines for the 4S.

RW Baird's William Power reiterates an Outperform rating on the stock, writing that "The iPhone 4S appears to be a solid product, with several meaningful upgrades, though there were no significant upside surprises."

"While today's launch may have proved a bit underwhelming relative to recently growing expectations, we continue to expect solid growth over the next couple of years and view valuation as attractive."

Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities reiterates a Buy rating and a price target of $666, writing, "We would be buyers on any weakness today."

White thinks the 4S's "interesting new or enhanced features [...] should drive a healthy upgrade cycle."

KingIsaacLinksr

Yeah, I wouldn't mind the touch taking over the classic, but we need more space than 64GBS, something around 150-200GB would be good.
