Tim,
Well, up until last Spring I worked for a university and by university standards your dowload would suck! Most universities I am aware of try to stay cutting edge and provide the best service possible to their student base.

Alright, yes, they try and they put restrictions on our download ability. (Upload and download space CANNOT exceed 3.6 GBs. But some ppl can get around this by using different Mac Addresses. I do it by using both wireless and wired.) Remember this, This is a tech school filled with Geeks and computer freaks. lol And its only 1 dorm building. The download does suck, you should see it overwireless....terrible. I sadly cannot change it and idk why it isn't faster. Thats life I suppose.
King
Wow! I just put it through another test (10:05 Western time) and it came out: 2623 down and 2319 up. I just realized that Wireless is not great. I forgot that I used that during the test. Those times are wired speeds. Woops.

I just looked at my screengrab of the download/upload result and saw that my server is in New York. To quote a famous hot sauce TV commercial: "NEW YORK CITY?! Get a rope..."
Looks like all of your servers are at least in your home state. The company that we get our cable through is Grande Communications, a Texas Company. Interesting.

King
what are you suposed to be getting and did you update the bios on your router?
Can't update the BIOS on the router as its a Centurylink supplied router. Supposed to be getting....gosh, I don't know, its not the transfer rate that's the problem, its the fact that my internet constantly fluctuates between fast and slow speed. Its the 1.5 GB plan if I remember correctly.
Just doing 5 speed tests got me a variety of results from 0.5 MB/s to 1.94 MB/s. Ping constantly fluctuates between 94 to 800 ms. The connection isn't stable. At all. Heck, I had to change settings tonight because my computer couldn't connect to the internet, even my iPhone had to be switched to 3G in order to browse.
Life of my iPhone:
AT&T Slowdown/issues/totalcrashes: 0
Centurylink slowdown/issues/total connection loss: over 50. Its a constant unending problem that my skype calls illustrate really well as I'll start green, go yellow, lose connection, and then fluctuate between red and yellow. Its infuriating. Heck, sometimes I have to switch to my iPhone's 3G connection for Skype calls because my internet is so bad and those calls are clearer and better. Its wrong.
King
But what is Centurylink's response? "Its your fault." "Your obviously not following our instructions that we told you 5 times now".

Okay, I'm going to give you some advice that they didn't. From what you said, nothing seems "wrong" from their part. Cable loads fluxes all the time depending on who is using the network. You will also get slowdown with anyone using your router at the same time as you are.
So, you have everyone that uses the service competing for general bandwith and everyone in your house competing for more specific bandwith. The speed that any company gives you as your speed is in fact your maximum speed. You won't always reach your max and if they are the only provider, you won't even reach it most of the time.
Here is the kicker. Those people that pay for higher bandwith get priority in the system over those people with slower packages. Their minimum range is higher than your minimum range. Torrents and streaming really play havoc on the stability of your network as well.
After you factor in all of that, do you still have a problem or is it functioning as designed?
Another question I have is how do they have a monopoly? Are they the only phone and cable company in your area? Usually, most areas have both cable and phone providers. When they do, both try to get into the internet game. Even if it's only two companies, it gives you competition.
Have you looked into other providers?
We have a DSL connection, last I heard that's not subject to the same problems that Cable lines have. If I am correct, I have a fairly good idea what is being used of our network, but if someone else is using the same line then I have no idea. If its just us then no, its not functioning as it should be. Again, going back to the fact that my internet cuts in and out at random times of the day. I would know if it was a torrenter killing my internet, its pretty obvious, but unless its another family, its not.
Centurylink has a monopoly because this town's economy is in decline. Embarq was bought up by another company who's name escapes my mind and they changed their name to Centurylink. Effectively killing embarq and the other company from competing against each other. The only ones left that I'm aware of is Verizon, who's business is very weak here and I think Comcast is the only other one. Centurylink controls a very large amount of the internet going on in this town and I know this for a fact that when my internet system crashes entirely for the day, most of the town is without an internet connection as well. I'm afraid I don't know all the companies that are here as the ones who surveyed other options were my parents. (But I'm fairly sure its a small #) I could certainly ask them who all is here. However, because we happen to live just outside city limits, no other companies are willing to provide an internet connection for us. Even Verizon. I think only 1 business, maybe Comcast said they would put in a cable line, but that we would have to pay upfront for the cost of it. Obviously we turned this down. So yes, Centurylink effectively has a monopoly on this town.

I really, really doubt that unless you have an obvious problem with the bit of cable attached to your house.
I have no doubt that they can fix it but don't underestimate the level of difficulty or cost that may be involved. If the whole town's dropping out it sounds like some sort of serious capacity issue that won't be resolved at the drop of a hat or the flick of a switch.
It's more likely that their customer spport reps are rubbish than that they're deliberately being obstructive alhough if they do hold the local monopoly then their incentive to sort things out will possibly be lower. The government were looking at legislative measures to ensure universal access to broadband internet over here.

Until recently, we still had dial-up. I think that was almost faster.
And I can sympathize with the monopoly thing. Qwest is the only game in town here. They own all the lines. Even if you use another service, they get THEIR service from Qwest.

I really, really doubt that unless you have an obvious problem with the bit of cable attached to your house.

I have a feeling they could, but as you said, they have no reason to and I've given up trying to get through the tech support's thick head. They could at least have the decency of sending a tech out to help out our problem and at least try and look like they care, but they won't so whatever...

Bought a new cable modem today since Comcast raised their monthly modem rental fee to $7 per month. Trying to set it up now. Here's my speed with the Comcast supplied device right now:
Well, just a few minutes with Comcast on the phone and the new cable modem is hooked up. Speed didn't change much. Although, I do like the little boost in upload speed. I'm real happy that I won't be paying $7.00 a month for the rental anymore too! :)

Been having some internet issues the last few weeks. Comcast just put a new cable modem in and basically said the cable modem I bought about 6 months ago is not working. I'm not sure what to think. The issue was upload speeds had been dropping to basically zero. Anyway, current speed with the Comcast modem. So, I guess for now I'm back to renting one for $7.00 a month. :(

Cox continues to suck (I just like saying that ;))
So I was talking to my cable company yesterday and they talked themselves out of a sale. It was pretty funny.
Me: Hi, I'm looking to increase my internet speed. I hear you have 60mps down. How much will that be to add?
CSR: Let me see what you have now... Looks like you have 20mbs down. What do you need 60 for? Isn't that fast enough? Are you a business or something?
Me: No I play a lot of XBOX and stream movies and I don't like lag.
CSR: It will be an extra 40 a month if you want to get it, but isn't 20MPS fast enough?
Me: Well, since you put it that way, I guess I can keep my extra $480 in my pocket?
CSR: $480?
ME: Yeah that's what it would have cost for the year, but I'm glad you talked me out of it. I can buy more games for my XBOXes.
CSR: How many do you have?
ME: One for each person in the house. I hate split screening, but we'll just make due on the 20 down.
CSR: Is there anything else I can help you with?
ME: Not really. I have every service you offer except for the porn channels, the only thing you could have offered was the speed increase.
CSR: Wow ... you do have everything.
Me: Yeah ... except 60 down, but I'm not a business.

My speed is almost where they say it should be at 20 down and 5 up. I had considered upgrading to the next service level but it would only gain me 5Mbps more on the download speed and for an additional $12.00 I don't think it's really worth that. Wow Chris, that's awesome! Cox Communications is horrible about that stuff. We "had" the top tier but now they offer an "even faster" tier for $50 MORE than what we're currently paying. Nope, no thanks. The thing that get me angry are their commercials. They show a typical home with like 4 computers and a house full of kids (about 20 of them) all using Wi-Fi iPads, laptops etc, and they are ALL enjoying lightning fast downloads...uh, yeah. When I play multiplayer XBox, and Joyce is watching a show on her iPad, our internet (same company as the commercial), comes to a screeching halt!!

My conclusion is Chris and others in Florida need super fast internet. Everyone there is either old or involved in some form of drug traffic. I'm not sure which category Chris falls into. ;)
It's not so bad. The kids can stream Netflix videos while my wife and I surf the web simultaneously. Granted, we're not streaming Netflix in 4k resolution, but if we're really interested in HD+ content, we shell out the cash for the Blu-Rays.
I remember waiting overnight to download Troops over my 28.8k modem, just so I could watch it. And having to follow Kasparov vs. Deep Blue via the chess server relay and an audio stream because I couldn't keep up with the RealVideo live stream. This is quite an improvement...

Wow, I have to hand my head in shame at my speed.
how much do you pay? I have to pay through the nose for that speed.
I pay for 25mb - but honestly the test I ran was from my desktop with a shaky wireless connection. I am paying for a 3-play package (phone, internet & cable w/VDR) ~$149 a month. I keep thinking about cutting cable and phone, but haven't done so yet.
I have the internet and phone through comcast. About $108, I added boost to my internet and it doubled the speed from 25 to 50
If I ditched the DVR, and cut back some channels I could get down to about the same price I think. I really have to cut cable..just waiting for HBO Go to allow me to subscribe without the cable connection.
Spent a little time at the Comcast store today rearranging some stuff. Got faster speed now too!

Here's my latest results. What I don't understand though is if I am getting these kind of speeds why, when I am downloading, does my browser suddenly have trouble loading pages. According to Vuze my DL speeds are only around 6 to 7 MBPS. As soon as the downloads finish browsing is fine again. Anyone have any answer?

Pete - Are you on Fios or wireless when you run that Speedtest?
Kevin - downloading can sap bandwidth no matter the connection you have. It tends to use as much as it can, depending on settings and various factors. Also, loading a web page involves many things besides your local connection speed.
I have to move my office - or run a network cable up to my office. It is in the worse spot in relate to the Wifi adapter. I am using a repeater to get that type of service!
Truthfully it doesn't really matter - since I just use the office for work. Any media watching is done off of devices that get good connections.
Pete - You're on Verizon Fios? If so those speeds are not right. The lowest should be 25/25. You're slower than a dial up. How can you stand it? If my speed was that slow I would probably disconnect out of frustration. The Fios network should be super fast. Have you tried using a different router? And also have you ran the Verizon Fios optimizer and analyzers? And can I ask how much you pay for such lousy speed?
Kevin
Any speed test done over Wifi does not represent your true internet connection speed. Run a wire Pete.

I only recently started having this problem Rico. I was able to download using VUZE up to ten files at a time and still surf the web no problem. Now it will download but won't let me access any web pages while doing so. I'm wondering if I might need to replace my modem?

Over the wireless - faster than I expected.
Yes I know - but for the desktop I use the most at home (only exclusively for VPN to work - note the test is not done when VPN is running) - it actually seems fast enough for me. I am not gaming, or streaming content on this PC. For some streaming devices we have, they get a much better connection - and I don't have many complaints. Next time I have occasion to get on one of the laptops the kids use - I will do another test and post.

I think Comcast offers three tiers and I was paying for the middle. I might have gotten an email saying they moved me up a tier, so I could be on their fastest residential plan now.
Recently got a new Linksys router and a new Motorola Arris cable modem. I was having a few weird disconnects with the old gear at times. Things seem solid now.
What Linksys router did you get Rico? I have been looking to upgrade my router, and I was thinking of a Linksys as that is what I have currently and always had good luck with them. I was eyeing a Netgear router, it was on sale last week, but not this week, so kicking myself a bit for snoozing on it as Amazon and Best Buy ran the sale on them at the same time, and then ended the same time.
I got a pretty expensive one since I tend to keep my gear a long time and use it heavily. This is the router...
http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Dual-Band-Wireless-Anywhere-WRT1900AC-FFP/dp/B00K91DB7Y/ref=pd_sim_147_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=17G98RAK4Z0MYMQ7BBK5 (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Dual-Band-Wireless-Anywhere-WRT1900AC-FFP/dp/B00K91DB7Y/ref=pd_sim_147_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=17G98RAK4Z0MYMQ7BBK5)
Yeah, that was the one I was thinking of myself. It was between that one and the Netgear Nighthawk, as like you, I would like to get a good one I can have for awhile.
I sell the different routers at work and I have heard some negatives about the Netgear Nighthawk. I use a Netgear and love it but it is no where near as good as the ones you guys are talking about. If and when I need a new Router I'll probably stick to a Netgear but I won't need the highest end for what I do on a regular basis. I have been playing the STO game again and for the most part I have had no issues except for a few signal drops which most of them recover before the game logs off.
I picked up a Netgear Nighthawk today, so will see how it goes. For the most part from what I read, it got pretty good reviews, so I am hoping that things work out for me with it. I guess at the very least, my laptop was able to connect to it, where with my previous router, it could not, without the use of USB network adapter. My Niece just came to live with us, and she has a HP laptop, which like mine could not connect, so that was my main reason I got this one. Also my Wife and Niece stream a lot of video, so this one seemed to be advertised as good for streaming.
So crossing my fingers this work out, and fortunately I was able to get it on sale at Staples, so missing out a few weeks back not as a big of a deal in the end.
I have a Netgear N900 router that has been really good. In my experience I have found the distance on the Netgear better than Linksys but have not tried the one Rico bought. That's like the Linksys cadillac of routers and probably more than most people need. However, if anyone is thinking about getting that router Sam's Club has them for under $200 in their stores.

Haven't posted a speed test in a little while. Still seems pretty good.

Does everyone here do a lot of file sharing? I find I cannot justify paying for speed increases, as at ~20mb my family of 4 surfs the web, streams videos on Netflix or Youtube, and I work from home without any issues or perceived slowness.
My son does some gaming, but it is mostly through STEAM, and he seems to move along at a good speed.

Speed helps me a lot for the podcast, big vidcasts, photo sharing, Dropbox, and so forth. I just wish the upload was quicker.
Huh... another bump up in download speed. Upload speed is still crap though.

This is me paying for the minimum speed they offer in my area.
Nice upload and decent download speed too.
Got a good speed bump today:

So - here is the weird thing. Our cable bill had gone up some and I called Comcast to see if I could get it lowered. They had a new package that lowered my bill a little and bumped up my internet speed. :)
That works! I have FIOS right now, and sometimes think about switching. I really want to cut the cable altogether. We are thinking of moving next year (when we are empty nesters) - and think I will make the cut then.
New speed test...
