Oh yeah baby! Shipped right from the hands of some poor Chinese factory workers probably. But at least I hopefully helped pay for them to upgrade some of their safety issues.

Ok, is there a swipe motion to just go back a screen? Like when you are in the app store?
Not any type of 'global' swipe action, no. In the app store there's generally an arrow thing in the top right corner to take you up one level. The app store is starting to need a bit of a UI overhaul.

Yeah, I see the arrow and have been using it, but I'm kind of shocked there aren't some universal swipe motions for things like that.
Oh, and man does this screen get dirty FAST! And I did wash up. LOL! Any suggestions on the easiest/best stuff to use and get to clean the screen with? Microfiber cloths? Kleenex?? An old white t-shirt???

The smart cover works pretty well, but yeah, it's a bit of a maintenance thing which is a problem with touch screens...(minor as it is). There are cloths that do the job though, can't remember what they are called.

Come on guys! You should know better than to fall for the hype =). Laptop prices for something that charges you piecemeal in apps to simulate the most basic laptop functions and software?
Be brave and make PT Barnum frown.
I obviously took some time before "falling for the hype." The reasons I got the iPad are not for things that a standard laptop can do. I wanted something ultra-light and portable for use around the house. Boots nearly immediately and has many, many apps that are not just "basic laptop functions." In any case, I'm pretty happy with it after one short night using it. I wasn't not going to get it just to be anti-hype or anti-Apple. It's frankly a very slick product. But I can also see it might not fit everyone's needs. Each person has to decide that on their own.
Have you downloaded the kindle app yet? I'd be interested to see how you compare it to using your kindle.
Show me a laptop that can run for 18 hours on a charge. My iPad serves all my work and personal needs all day. I charge it when I go to bed and that's about it. 6am to 10pm worth of computing ... Priceless.

I have been able to significantly up my video capabilities on Youtube, I have LOVED garage band, and even composed several songs for clients... Here is one song that I did with two different apps on it, and the most notable, the Cello voice is from an App called Thumbjam. So real! I use the Friendly for Facebook and the Instogram for doing goofy stuff during the work day and life in general and hardly ever put it down! I use Heytell, the walkie talkie program, and surf a bunch. It's really such a slick unit. BUT, I dod zap the battery on it .. because I'm using it constantly. It only lasts a day for me, then it has to be recharged... hehehehe. Check out a couple of samples of the songs I'm doing for clients on it...

So will this affect your paper comic collecting? Will you be converting to digital?
I'm sure I'll definitely be going and getting more digital comics now and less paper. I'll always love a good paper comic in my hands to read, but the costs are getting frankly outrageous and they tend to take up a lot of room if you save them.

I used my iPad all during college this term and the ONLY time I needed a laptop was when the teacher required us to run a science program via-CD. I got around it. And as he....is a different teacher I doubt I'll run into the problem again. Also, the iPad has an awesome battery life which I need when I'm running around, doesn't lose my documents by accident like Windows will sometimes and let me create two awesome presentations in a fairly short time. Its not a laptop, its something on a different level.
Also, its FUN. I rarely can say that when I'm doing work, but its fun to make stuff in the iWork suite. That is the best value of all imo.
And do I even need to link Microsoft's Office Suite's price? ;) That's more expensive than all these apps combined.

Checked it out with a fairly low-end game and it works pretty darn nice, probably better once I get on a faster connection. So that works for me, the other solutions I've found are not nearly as good.
I have to wonder MSUfan, what's conformist, going with the iPad or sticking with a Laptop with an OS that the large majority is still using. ;)

It's awesome and so much cheaper than some of the alternatives!
Played a couple of videos over it and they performed well. A little stuttery but the PC is an atom and I think the screen capture performance in very much dependent on the beefiness of the computer.

No, wire is for syncing and file transferring only. Everything else is done wirelessly.

Not really a built in file manager, files are handled in apps like GoodReader which is the most awesome one that I use daily. You can also Open-In files like PDFs and such to other apps btw. Dropbox (or other clouds) work too, but GoodReader is the most robust one I've found.

I never turn it off unless it starts acting funny. I charge it every night, usually it's down to like 25% charge by the end of the day, and so far the battery is as good as new.
Quote from: Rico on June 09, 2011, 07:51:18 PM
Hey, do you iPad owners turn your iPad fully off at night, or just let it go into sleep mode?
You don't really need to turn it off unless your restarting the software for bug reasons or you need to super conserve the battery. I never do, I just slap it on the charger and go to sleep...zzzzzzz ;)
King
Yeah, what King said. No need to physically turn it off. There is a nicer adapter cable on apple.com that gives you about 6ft of cord ending in a 3-prong adapter which you can plug your USB cable into. It is perfect for a nightstand because it gives you plenty of length.
I use it to charge my iPad overnight but it is long enough to let me use it laying in bed while charging. Then I just sit it on the night table and go to sleep. It's all charged by the morning!
I've been leaving mine plugged into my PC since I have been syncing it a lot and stuff. But I turn the PC off at night and just let the iPad go into sleep mode.
Rico, just be aware that an iPad requires more juice than what flows from a USB 2.0 port so even if you leave it plugged into the PC overnight, it is charging very slowly. In fact, the indicator on the iPad says "Not Charging" (it is but it is like a trickle charge).
So if your iPad is really low on power, you might want to leave it plugged into a wall outlet so that it is 100% by the morning.
Thanks for the tip. In my short time with the device so far using it a couple hours in the evening I'm going down to maybe 75% power. I normally get home and power up my PC and go do other stuff. I think now I'll juice it up via the wall.
Hey, about this battery stuff. Where do you guys all stand on the whole recharging when thing? Do you think it's better to let the battery run down to maybe 20% and then charge, or is it ok to charge each night if you are only at say 75% power? I know certain battery types used to retain sort of a shadow and if you always charged them only after they lost 20-30% they would soon loose the ability to give you a full charge. I think those issues are kind of gone now, but I was just wondering if anyone has heard reports of iPads and suggestions on when to charge them for optimum use.
I seem to recall Apple saying the iPad batteries do not have the memory issue so that you do not have to worry about 'when' you charge it. For me, I am out the door at 5:45am and usually in bed by 11PM and my iPad battery will last for that entire period of time. So I usually only recharge overnight when the battery is at like 20-30%. I have taken the device all the way down to 5% a few times. :)
I do not just keep the iPad plugged in all the time. I charge it and then I use it. If I were to leave it at home all day, I probably would not leave it plugged into the wall all day (don't want power surges or anything to potentially damage it while I am gone).
Yeah, there are no battery memory issues at all. I usually plug it in (to the wall) once I hit about 20% or less. If I'm using it for podcast recording notes, I'll typically plug in while we're recording and editing...
I was wondering out of all the iPad owners here who has a 3G version? People who have wifi-only units, have you ever run into a situation where you've wished you had 3G?

Only the rare occasion where Jamie and I are in the car on a trip and need to find something or need directions, but that's it. Even on planes they have wi-fi and all our destinations outside of home seem to have wi-fi, and I think that will get even more ubiquitous.
I have the 64gb 3G version and I really find it indispensible. I use it all the time -- even at work I find that using 3G gives me a certain sense of privacy cuz the IT department cannot snoop on my Internet activities while in the office. hee hee
As a youth minister, I end up in churches all over Chicagoland and having the Internet at my disposal for research, email, document sharing, surfing, and various location-based services is truly enabling for me.
If I can use WiFi, I use it. But 3G gives me freedom to do what I need, whenever I need to, almost wherever I need to.
On a related note: A good friend of mine works at AT&T corporate and he tells me that they are actively determining how to provide family data 'bucket' plans. They might become available late fall. Wouldn't it be awesome if they announce something like that around the same time as the iPhone 5/iPad 3 with 4G LTE is available? I would love to get rid of five data plans (three iPhones and two iPads) for one family data plan (especially if it has tethering so my son's Touch could connect too)!
I know here in Canada Rogers Wireless has a plan where you can share your 3G data plan across all your devices. You pay a single data plan fee plus an adder for each additional device (10 bucks or something).
Also RickPeete as I recall from one of our previous conversations, you can buy the 3G version and start/stop 3G services on a month by month basis, correct?
For iPads, there are no contracts. It is a month-to-month charge so you can turn it on and off as you wish. For iPhones, however, you have to sign up for a data plan.
So I am hoping to sign up for a family data plan that can be accessed by all the iPads and iPhones in my family. A tethering option (or MiFi device) that also shares that plan would work for my son's iPod Touch so he can watch his YouTube and play his games during car trips.
We have the WiFi only iPads and the ATT MiFi with 5GB wach per month.
My wife and I are so often apart because I work outside the home, that the Mifi solution would not work for us as a replacement for 3G.
However, I do have a MiFi device with a on-the-go deal with Virgin Mobile which I can pay for 1 month as necessary for unlimited 3G (no contract or monthly fee). I use that on vacations/car trips so my son has internet for his Touch. And sometimes I need it if AT&T is not available where I am but Sprint is (doesn't happen very often).
Anything to consolidate all these data plans would be a welcome change...
Cool
My iPhone is used for 3G stuff, iPad sticks to Wifi which is around the college and home so I do not miss the lack of 3G. I guess it depends on your situation and where you plan on using the iPad.

I was a little tempted to go the 3G route on the iPad but I'm generally near Wifi and don't really plan on taking it into work. Mainly I wanted it for around the house.
Oh, I just used Facetime for the first time with my younger son Eric who is up at college for the summer term. He connected via his Macbook. Worked great! Lynn really liked that feature a lot!
...iPad rocks. Seriously, every other tablet is dying a quick death. Welcome to the future, brought to you by Apple. :)
It's really all about the apps.
Hey, does anyone else find it a bit awkward to plug in their USB cable thing into their iPad? I wonder if it's the curved surface on the edge but you really have to have it perfect to slide it in. I also miss those little side squeeze plugs that other connectors have used.
Because of the bevel, plugging in the dock connector can be tricky especially in the dark.
I am writing this response in a classroom of a church in Barrington IL at 7:06am while the 60+ youth here are still asleep. iPad 3G saves the day again cuz the church's WiFi is secured and I don't know their key. Gotta love the 3G! ;D
On the battery front, I the iPads anything like the iPhone then I think the advice is to let it run down to 0 once in a while and then recharge all the way back up. As well as anything else this also apparently recalibrates the battery meter display.
Rico- yes, I do a lot of adapter stuff and I find it hard with the USB connector. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love it, I'm not sure why they just didn't put a USB port in the side. Kind of silly, buy hey they got another $30 from me. I acutally bought a third party one, and then had to send it back cause it didn't work. It was a combination one. But for what I do with the midi and microphone stuff it had to be the legit adapter otherwise it worked hit and miss. Oh well, what can you do? Made this weeks song with it again, plus a cool Vocorder program I bought as an app for 99cents... amazing.
Thanks for the thoughts guys. Hey, what are people doing to protect the screen? Anyone stick one of those inviso-shield things over it? If you have put a clear cover over the screen, does it show fingerprints as fast as the unprotected screen? I'm not quite sure what I want to do on that yet.
I originally got some protectors for mine, but quickly abandoned the idea because of the bubbles and strange feeling using them. I ended up taking it completely off and now just have a microfiber cloth with me all the time. It works for me and I really need the tactile feeling of the plain glass for the use of the musical intrument playing. I don't know if that makes sense or not, but I need to be able to move quickly at some points. The cover seemed to feel like it went slower. It could be just me. So now I have three different cases depending on what I'm working on that day, one that is leather and has a little stand to the back of it, another with a bluetooth keyboard for writing notes and stuff when I'm out, and the last a back protector that I use around the house to keep the body of the unit fresh and happy. Phew!
Thanks for the great info Rick. Yeah, I kind of feel the same way about those protectors. I'm pretty careful with my stuff, so I think I'll keep the screen "naked" for now at least.
The funny part about this conversation.... if taken out of context... hehehe. I know, I know...

I haven't used any screen protectors even with my iPod Touch 3rd Gen years ago and it hasn't caused me any trouble not to have it, so just don't drop it and you should be fine :)
Also, yeah, plugging in the USB stuff is a bit awkward, but I'm ok with it :)

I got a Screen protector for my touch when i got it a few years ago and it is ok. got the Apple one, so when it is in the case you do not know it is there. But the wife never bothered and hers is fine. Mind you i do take mine to work and it can be a bit dirty there.
For a phone I could see using a screen protector due to shoving in your pocket, glovebox, purses, wherever. But I think just a nice case for the iPad should be ok.
Anyone have good suggestions for iPad 2 cases? I'm not super thrilled with the "smart cover" so far. Especially since it only covers the face of the unit.
I didn't use any case/protector on my iPhone 3G and I just use a very low profile case on my iPhone 4. I was at work one day and it happened to fall and get a little mark on the back glass, that caused me to get the slim case. When I'm skiing I have a heavier duty case in case I wipe out and land on my phone.
I don't like screen protectors, I find they reduce sensitivity of the touch screen and they are almost impossible to get on without air bubbles.
Looks like Fran might be getting an iPad 2 for her birthday so I'm paying closer attention to all these threads!
There are so many cases out there Rico, that it would almost be impossible to suggest a particular one. And it also depends on how much protection you want, what functions you want with it, waterproof-or-no and what kind of material (plastic, leather, etc) you want on it. Not to mention color.

I have this case and I love it:

That's a slick case Dan. I think I want something much like the simple, black leather one Apple made for the iPad 1. Fairly thin, lightweight, just to protect the shell a bit and cover it up when not in use.
That is nice...
I have three different cases for three different scenarios, the first, just the back plastic one that is form fitting and keeps from getting scratched in my everyday work, the second is a leather one that has a cover over the top of the glass that can be snapped on for protectiong, also it has a kickstand on the back of it so I can use it tilted up. The third a bluetooth keyboard and case. I use this when I'm typing up extensive notes or documents. Here are the pictures below of them.
Thanks for the pics Rick. Nice selection of case stuff you have there. So many choices.
I guess I should have said, they are pretty low cost, well two of them were. I got the first one off of Amazon.com for like $4, the leather stand up one was around $12 off of Ebay, and then the most expensive one, the bluetooth keyboard case was $99. Highway robbery if you ask me. But that was what they are going for.

Yep it's heavy duty but thin, doubles as a stand and even puts the iPad into standby when I close the flap. If you fold back the flap it's even got a built in strap so you can hold the device one handed (for those of us with small hands!)
I should mention that if you did get a Apple Smart Cover, there are companies making thin, yet strong cases for the back of the iPad that work with the smart cover. I'd link them, but I seem to have lost the link. ergh.

What worries me about the Smart Cover is the metal side piece. Clipping and unclipping it can scratch the shell of the iPad.
I haven't noticed the Smart Cover leaving any marks on the recesses that it magnetizes to...
I use the Zaggmate Keyboard case that Logitech is selling. It is pricey at $99 but that is pretty much what cases with embedded BlueTooth keyboards are selling for. You can always get a standard BT keyboard for $60 and save yourself some $$. But if you think about it, most iPad cases run arond $3-40 so if you throw in a $50-60 BT keyboard, the $99 price does not seem more costly than other solutions out there.
I use the keyboard a lot for blogging, word processing, emails, and for text intensive apps like Evernote, MaxJournal, my remote desktop app (PocketCloud Pro), and even FaceBook.
Like Rick, I also have a secondary case when I don't need the keyboard. It is a case for the back of the iPad which allows you to still use the Smart Cover. This gives me the protection for the back of the device against scratches as well as more safety when it is raining.

I'm jealous of all you iPad 2 people, especially because the new magnetic screen cover looks so cool. I have the standard Apple case for my 1st gen iPad, and it's done a good job protecting my device for the time I've had it so far (gosh a year and a half almost? wow time flies). I've not used any kind of screen protector and have had no problems with scratches. I clean the screen every night with anti static, non-abrasive screen cleaning wipes to remove my greazy fingerprints.

One thing I heard about the original Apple case is that it's a dust magnet. Is that the case?
Yeah, I generally wipe down the outside of the case the same time I do the screen. The new magnetic covers seem much much nicer though.
Well, I still need to decide on a case but one thing is still bugging me about my iPad 2 (keep in mind I'm enjoying it a lot too). Shutting apps down is kind of a pain. I know we have discussed this and I know people say they don't impact the OS much, but as a long time PC guy, it bugs me. Especially since it seems most of these apps don't even have a close or exit option built into them. Am I missing something? I know I can power down and also use the home button double tap and then clear them out one by one, but neither option is something I really like. I'd love an app that closes all other apps! Is there one? If not, there should be!
Hey Rico, on the case... Best Buy now sells a snap on clear cover for the back, that is compatable with the smart cover. Joyce bought one for hers and it works well...

It's still pretty early in the life cycle of iOS. I agree this is a very clunky way to handle shutting down apps. Most iPhone/iPod users don't even know how to do it or that the option is available. I would imagine that at some point in the next few iterations of iOS this will be addressed.
There are apps that can clear them from memory, but tbh, not entirely sure they work all that well and I wouldn't really trust them anyway...
And no, there is no magic shut-off-app-button other than the double click the home button. It doesn't bother me all that much, I just purge the apps from memory once in a while, usually in a 24-hour period, just to keep the OS running ok. (Though its hardly required). For me I have not noticed an appreciable drain on the battery regardless of how many apps are frozen in the background or not.

yeah, you just eventually get used to doing things that way
A "switch it off and on again" every once in a while is what I do.
Well we haven't had our iPad for long and the 3G has already come in handy. Fran's plant is moving and they've shut down the internet connection at the old building. She is still there packing things up but still needs access to her work email and the ability to edit documents, Bell 3G to the rescue!
We're on the smallest 15.00/month plan so it's not an incredible strain.
