@  Tim - the Splashtop app works really well.  I just used it to stream an .mkv file to the iPad from my PC.
@ Rick - I'll check out that FTP app.  I definitely need an app for that.

I know how you feel!  Once the new generation comes up (with competitors) I may fall off the fence and get one.

Come on guys! You should know better than to fall for the hype =). Laptop prices for something that charges you piecemeal in apps to simulate the most basic laptop functions and software?

Be brave and make PT Barnum frown.

Rico

I obviously took some time before "falling for the hype."  The reasons I got the iPad are not for things that a standard laptop can do.  I wanted something ultra-light and portable for use around the house.  Boots nearly immediately and has many, many apps that are not just "basic laptop functions."  In any case, I'm pretty happy with it after one short night using it.  I wasn't not going to get it just to be anti-hype or anti-Apple.  It's frankly a very slick product.  But I can also see it might not fit everyone's needs.  Each person has to decide that on their own.

Have you downloaded the kindle app yet? I'd be interested to see how you compare it to using your kindle.

Show me a laptop that can run for 18 hours on a charge. My iPad serves all my work and personal needs all day. I charge it when I go to bed and that's about it. 6am to 10pm worth of computing ... Priceless.

billybob476

damn you guys for making compelling arguments and making me want one... :)

I have already made more than I paid for the Ipad back with business that I have done in my multi media company with it.  I have been able to significantly up my video capabilities on Youtube, I have LOVED garage band, and even composed several songs for clients... Here is one song that I did with two different apps on it, and the most notable, the Cello voice is from an App called Thumbjam.  So real!  I use the Friendly for Facebook and the Instogram for doing goofy stuff during the work day and life in general and hardly ever put it down!  I use Heytell, the walkie talkie program, and surf a bunch.  It's really such a slick unit.  BUT, I dod zap the battery on it .. because I'm using it constantly.  It only lasts a day for me, then it has to be recharged...  hehehehe.  Check out a couple of samples of the songs I'm doing for clients on it...
