I have never watched this show, and it's a gaping hole in my sci-fi knowledge. Is there any possibility if a jumping on point, or has the train left the station on this one?

You can easily jump in with the first Matt Smith season (last year) without priory knowledge. Or watch the new series from season 1 (2005).

I'd serious suggest watch the classic show too if you get the opportunity.

Rico

Definitely jump in.  I'd suggest starting with the 2005 season year or what I like to call, "Doctor Who: The Next Generation."  :)

If you are co,ing in now, just start at Matt Smiths first season (he's half way through his second now). Then go back and look at some classic series and then start at 2005. Let Matt be your first Doctor :D

Plenty of threads on here for Doctor Who. have fun, and welcome to the world of the blue box.

come to think of it i'd like to jump in too. any stations or sites i should go to?

Pyrovile

I'd start with the first episode and try to do at least one story from the run of each of the Doctors until the 2005 series and then I'd just watch straight through.  After that I'd go back and watch as much of the classic episodes as I could.

Well, the 2005 series is on instant watch on Netflix, so I guess I'll start there tonight. Just looking to have viewing lined up for my month off of work for my gutting, er surgery that is.

Actually, there's a heck of a lot of Dr. Who on instant, how about some episodes that are considered "classics"? I'd like to see the best of the old as well.

Try The Aztecs from the 1st Doctors run then look for The Three Doctors.  Anything with Troughton, Pertwee or Tom Baker is always worth watching.

Thanks for the suggestions, it's great, Netflix has so many of these to watch! I lucked out.

There are some other excellent classic series recommendations over in this thread.

Personally, I love the show, both classic, and modern. Enjoy!

I'm about 6 episodes in on the '05 series, I love it! Great tone, cool stories, can't believe I have ignored this for so long. My geek card should have been revoked ages ago.

There will be some characters that show up and they will expect that you know who they are so feel free to ask any questions and I'm sure the gang here can give you a quick catch-up on them.  Otherwise, I'd suggest working your way through all of the "new Who" (2005 - present) before you try to go back and watch some of the classic stuff.

That's my plan, since there is a massive amount of stuff that came before. This seems a good way to get into that universe.
