FYI - Cataclysm TV spot tomorrow night during the football game on FOX 4:15 EDT, 3:15 CST.   I'm downloading the beta - GEESH!!  15 GIGS!!  That's on top of my normal game

Downloading the beta??  Is it open beta now???

sheldor

Not sure - I just looked at my account and the link was there to download.   Going to take most of the day.   Free character copy too.

On your account page?  You mean when you login at account management?

sheldor

Yes.  Download is VERY slow.  14gb at 216 kb/s.   Might as well be 1.21 GIGAWATTS :D

Rico

Huh??  I don't see it.  I see a Public Test realm link, but that isn't the Beta.

Anyone that plays a mage at lvl 80, or knows about the class, I would be very interested to hear impressions of the class after the latest patch.  I hear through the grapevine that Mages are getting complaints of being overpowered again.  Can someone describe the changes to the talents?  I was a mostly Arcane focused mage during WotLK, and LOVED it for PvE.  Comments?

I have been playing this game for 2 weeks now. I am a Level 49 warrior and loving it. I can see why this puts most other MMORPGs to shame. I can't wait for the expansion!
Ripley: Ash. Any suggestions from you or Mother?
Ash: No, we're still collating.
Ripley: [Laughing in disbelief] You're what? You're still collating? I find that hard to believe.

My main is a mage.  I am not an expert but I'd say they pumped them up a little bit.  But then again, they pumped a few classes up.  All this "balancing the class" thing to me is somewhat pointless.  Where is it written that every class needs to balance out?  What they need to do is give classes more uniqueness and purpose like old school D & D - at least in my view.  Everyone seems to just want to pump out the DPS.  But I guess that's the way the game is structured for PvP.  I don't really do PvP so it doesn't matter much to me.  Anyway, the game is still fun for me, even with the changes.

Balancing is definitely required for PVP but for PVE as well.   So that all classes can be used and ppl don't have too many issues.  This is more aimed at group raiding/dungeons.  For years, anything but Holy Paladin was a stupid spec for Paladins.  So the attempting balancing act is really required for all sides of WoW.  I have no idea if they actually have done it right by now, but it would be nice to think they have fixed all the classes and specs to be playable in PVE/PVP and still be effective.  I knew Blizzard had done wrong when certain classes were informally banned from being certain specs because they couldn't do the instance while I was playing.  I was a Ret Paladin so I had a lot of experience of not being able to do anything because everyone hated Rets (I loved the spec to death).  So for me, that hurt my gaming experience, to love something, yet be totally unable to do anything as a group because ppl wouldn't let you in due to you being "weak".

When you have so many classes in a game like this, balance is required so that classes feel fun and comparable.

I'm just saying.

I don't exactly agree.  Take a healing class for example.  They are needed but don't have to be able to churn out the DPS.  The trick is to give each class something important and needed to do - not just lob spells or melee the enemy.  The real problem is most people don't seem to want to do those "other tasks" that don't involve blowing the enemy apart.  And that is I guess the real problem.  Again for me, it doesn't matter because PvP has never interested me.  I play the game for the questing, exploring, lore, feel, etc.

Its true that Healers are hard to find.  I was a healer for a while, (I switched to ret later) but I burned out because everything was so dependent on the healer and as a Paladin, that was a hard and frustrating job because they gimped us as Healers.  And really, if the game is frustrating and difficult, its no longer a game.  What annoyed me is that one simple spell and they easily could fix the holy line.  That's all it would have taken.  But I read that the Devs would never give us said spell because "It would make the class less unique".

But yes, everyone wants to be DPS because DPS is less stressful than Tankers or Healers.  If you misstep on Tanking or your heal fails at the wrong moment (and usually the NPC your fighting causes said heal to fail), then your group wipes and they, of course, blame the tank or healer.

I guess for you, it sounds like you don't do a lot of the group content so you probably don't receive a lot of what I had to receive while playing.  It should be a fun experience, even as grouping and it was, but a lot of the time you spent wishing that there was a better way.

There is definetly a ton of pressure on me as a tank!

I didn't mean to start a balancing debate, I am more curious about how the new talent changes have affected PvE.  I always LOVED the mechanic of using the instant invisibility to drop out of combat with my Arcane mage, and there were certain combos that were absolutely devastating when soloing (Arcane Blast and Arcane Missles) and I've read that there have been significant changes to these spells.
