It depends on the size of the screen that you're using and the refresh rate of the system. You really don't need more than 720 on anything 38" or less unless you're inches away from the screen.

Guys, with regards to resolution you are missing a pretty big thing.  The iPad isn't just for video.  You are talking in terms of video content resolution - such as 720p and 1080p.  Raise your hand if your computer monitor is 1024 x 768.  I'm guessing not many raised their hand.  TEXT is very important and other things like photo viewing and so forth.  And for all that (and more) higher resolution is definitely helpful.  I sit many feet away from my 1080p TV watching fluid video content, but try reading fine text on it.  In any case, as tablets progress resolution is obviously going to increase.

Very good point Rico. Quite right! :)

As you well know, it's not all about pixel count. The amount of space you squeeze those pixels into has some influence on the matter too.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I don't get what you mean by this. I don't see where we were missing anything. The question was about HD resolution and not the Text reading aspects of it. That being said, I can read text fine on my TV while sitting 8'3" away (measured to insure optimal Kinect space). Are you saying that the resolution of the ipad is good or bad? I'm pretty sure that the resolution isn't going to increase much more than it already is because more pixel and pixel processing needs are going to mean less battery life.

I'm pretty sure that Apple isn't even going to attempt to make the iPAD do everything or even close to it. If it has HD streaming and other perks like that, it cuts into the need for Airbooks and Macbooks. Maybe the competition might come with a better resolution, but not better resolution + same battery life + same dimensions.

Also, Feathers is right. 1080 x728 is a lot prettier on 9.1 than it is on 22".

Do you read magazines or books on your TV?  More resolution is better and will also make reading and viewing web pages easier on the iPad.  I'm not saying it's bad now, I'm just saying it could be better (and will be better).

Here's another thing to keep in mind.  As people get bigger monitors for their computers, laptops with higher resolution, web pages will start to be optimized for higher resolutions.  640 x 480 used to be the norm.  Then it moved to 1024 x 768 and soon it will move to an average of probably 1280 x 800 or 1280 x 1024.  With multi-tasking it's nice to have higher resolution with multiple apps going.  This is an obvious thing to improve upon and other tablets will also be notching it up too.  It's going to happen.  Like I said earlier I'll take any bets anyone has against the iPad 3 having a higher resolution than iPad 2.  Even Bryan agreed with me on that one.  ;)

There's no need for full 1080p for video, however Rico is right, the point of the "retina display" is to display text in a form that is indistinguishable from magazine print. My old iPhone has aliasing on the text that made it looks fuzzy.

With regard to websites, any site I create these days is usable at 1024 x 768 resolution. Any less then that and you're side-scrolling. I wish I could optimize for higher but that's the industry standard at the moment.

I think it will be dependent on what the other tablet manufacturers do when they revise their products (Samsung, RIM, Motorola). If there is consumer demand for better resolution and they adopt it, so to will Apple. the only thing is I don't think there is a huge demand for higher resolution at this point. That certainly may change, but without excpetion, everyone I know who has an iPad has no complaint with the current resolution...in fact most don't even understand how that works. :)

In my opinion what needs more optimizing is the rate at which data loads from a webpage as you scroll down the page.  I hate how as you scroll down the page you see jumbled, scrabbled data that first loads in all fuzzy then clears to be readable.  I'd like to see it load the whole page into memory at once for instant viewing.

Yeah, I think that's also caused by how strong the wireless connectivity is. If I am far from my base station, pages load slower.

So I got home last night and saw that the new iOS had been released. The coolest new feature is home sharing from the iTunes library to devices running iOS 4.3 (3GS+and iPad) on the same network. I tried it out last night and it seems to work flawlessly. Not sure why it didn't ship with this functionality but it's definitely a great feature.

Is this Mac only?  Or will iTunes on a PC be capable of streaming too???

billybob476

I believe it works for PCs as well. Need to update my phone to see.

Jobydrone

I haven't tried but I'm 100% certain it works from any computer running the latest version of iTunes to any iPhone 3GS or higher, recent iPod touch, or iPad, as long as they're running iOS 4.3.  Interestingly, this update is not available for the Verizon iPhone nor has any time frame for it's release been projected.

I am up and running on iOS 4.3 without incident on both the iPad and iPhone 3GS.  Now I am just waiting for tomorrow to get the new iPad 2.  See my blog for my thoughts.
