My relatives asked me if I could open up a wall/shelf area that had some lattice in it and make another doorway from their kitchen to the living room.  I guess I shouldn't have told them I'm pretty handy with a hammer.  Anyway, spent some time working on it today.  Pretty much done and just needs some trim work - which I'm leaving for them to do I think.  Kind of fun to swing a hammer for a bit and use a saw again.  Been awhile since I've had a chance to do some home improvement stuff.  Anyway, here are a few pics.

Good job.  Looks like it used to be a doorway.  What's the status of your stay?  Still have to move out in May?

Status hasn't changed much for now.  Still waiting to learn more from Testor's.

Wow, nice. I am 100% home improvement retarded. I can't do anything useful around the house beyond the pool and some landscaping.

Great job Rico, so I've got some work here that needs doing are you free. We'll supply cups of tea ;)

Looking good! I have so many things I want to do to the house and no time to do them!

Rico

The biggest trouble with doing this was I didn't have all my normal tools with me.  They have a few things left at this house, but I miss using my own stuff.

Thanks!  I attribute that to my time growing up.  I learned how to do a lot at a young age.  Carpentry, electrical, home repair, etc. all stuck with me.  And I like it too.  Frankly, if I could make a good living off fixing houses up I would.  Very satisfying work.

All good fun although I don't tend to do too much on that scale personally. Given that it's wooden rather then brick, however, even I might have had a go at that.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

My father is quite handy with all this home improvement stuff (he's redone the basement, two bathrooms, added an addition to their house and a bunch of work at a flea market he used to be part owner of). He recently retired from managing his various businesses and now actually does make a little bit of additional income doing handy work for people around Montreal.

He enjoys it and it helps him pass the time while my mother is at work.

Believe it or not, when I was younger I actually built a huge addition on a house we owned.  My friends helped me.  It turned out "ok" but after I was done, I decided the commitment and time involved wasn't worth it personally to me!  :)  Oh well.  Then when we moved into our home we live in now, we turned the garage into our family room/studio.  I hired a bunch of that work out cause I remembered what a hassle the other stuff was.  Andrew, my middle son, will be graduating in a month or so with an associates degree in carpentry.  I'll let him work on my stuff now!

I have been and always will be, your friend.

Yeah interestingly the addition to my parents house started life as a large raised cement patio. It then got converted to a covered patio, then an uninsulated closed patio and finally now a fully insulated addition :)

Basically a very long running 20 year project.

Before I was born my father, my uncles and my grandfather rented a backhoe and actually dug out a cold storage room at my parents house as well. Ah the days when you didn't need permits (or at least no one said anything if you didn't have them).

Rico

"Permits??  I don't need no stinking permits!"  ;)

If this was one of my relatives, I'd have gotten that far and they'd have said "I've changed my mind. I don't like it. Can you put it back?"
