Battlestar's Gaius Baltar moves to Syfy's Eureka

James Callis, who for four seasons brought to life Battlestar Galactica's Gaius Baltar, has joined the cast of Syfy's Eureka as a former resident whose unexpected return turns life in the small town of Eureka upside down.

His character will reportedly cause a cataclysmic change this season, thanks to his romantic interest in Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and his significant friction with Sherriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson).

Here's Syfy's official announcement:

JAMES CALLIS (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) JOINS SYFY'S EUREKA

PRODUCTION ON SEASON 4 OF HIT SERIES FROM
UNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS BEGINS MARCH 18

Series Stars Colin Ferguson, Joe Morton, Salli Richardson-Whitfield to Direct Episodes
Eureka Slated to Return to Syfy July 9, 2010

New York, New York - March 15, 2010 - Production begins this week in Vancouver on season four of Eureka, one of Syfy's most popular original series, it was announced by Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Development, Syfy, and Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. The dramedy's new season welcomes an all-new regular cast member, James Callis (Battlestar Galactica) as "Dr. Grant." Syfy has ordered 20 episodes of Eureka, which will once again be shot entirely on location in and around Vancouver, Canada, and is slated to premiere on Friday, July 9th of this year.

Throughout the four-season run of Syfy's award-winning Battlestar Galactica, James Callis starred as "Dr. Gaius Baltar" garnering both critical acclaim and fan adoration for his portrayal of the self-serving, opportunistic, conniving genius. On Eureka, Callis will play scientist "Dr. Grant," a former resident of the town whose unexpected return is cause for serious alarm and—considering his romantic interest in Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield)—significant friction with Sherriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson). New and returning fans won't want to miss the big changes in store for everyone in the small town of Eureka after a cataclysmic shift turns their lives upside down.

Once again this season series stars Colin Ferguson and Joe Morton ("Henry Deacon") will direct episodes and also making her directorial debut is female lead Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Also, special guest stars returning this season include Jaime Ray Newman ("Dr. Tess Fontana") and Matt Frewer ("Taggart").

Eureka seems like any other cozy, Pacific Northwest town, but is actually a secret community of geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research. What they've unwittingly created is a place where anything imaginable can happen... and does. In addition to Ferguson, Richardson-Whitfield, Morton, and now Callis, the series also stars, Erica Cerra ("Jo Lupo"), Neil Grayston ("Douglas Fargo"), Niall Matter ("Zane Donovan") and features Jordon Hinson ("Zoe Carter"). Co-creator Jaime Paglia and Bruce Miller are Executive Producers. The series is produced and distributed by Universal Cable Productions.

Eureka's third season was its highest-rated and most-watched season. With full DVR playback data factored in, Eureka settled comfortably into its new night, Fridays at 9PM, last summer averaging an impressive 3.2 million total viewers per week. It was also the show's best season ever in adults 18-49 (averaging 1.4 million per week) and adults 25-54 (1.6 million per week).

Anyone watch the premiere this week??  :jawdrop
Wow.. what a game changer.. it's like a re-boot. Now the question is will the change it back.. as some of the changes are good like Tess is back with Carter and Allison sons is no longer autistic. But then you have Jo and Zane no longer a couple and Henry and his "new" wife. It was good to see Jame Callis.. I was not a fan of Baltar but so far I'm liking this character. Can't wait to see where they go with this season.
Just watched it.  Quite a first episode.
Cute way to get Carter/Allison together only to break them up again.  So sad about Jo/Zane.  Wow - what a great role for Callis.  Next week supposedly Fargo now runs GD?   Loved the homage to Terminator.  Wonder if Nathan is now alive?
Surprised this was not a 2-part - seemed a bit rushed and all too easy but then again - this is Eureka.   Good to have the gang back again

Rico

Just watched the first episode of season 4.  Really liked it.  Very cool and it was fun to see all of our favorite Eureka folks back & James Callis.  Great start to the season.  Watched it on www.hulu.com

RickPeete

Eureka was back with a vengeance!  Loved it!  I think Dr. Grant will bring some good dynamics into the show.

QuadShot

Oh yeah! Watched it over the weekend and Rick, you're right! They ARE BACK! And better than ever.  I loved the premiere episode. I think this will be a good season.

moyer777

I really enjoyed the first two episodes, very cool.

I have been and always will be, your friend.

Geekyfanboy

Yeah same here Rick.. looks like they are keeping the currently storyline around.. at least for a while.

Geekyfanboy

Just watched last weeks episode.. this series always manages to deliver.. it's a must see for me..

And I don't think I mentioned this but at Comic Con Wil Wheaton announced he'll be back later in the season for more episodes and then Felicia announced that she was joining Eureka for a few episodes and that her character and Wil's character are going to have a love triangle.

Then at the Eureka panel Felicia was there and they announced she will be doing at least 10 episodes.. maybe more.

Rico

Wow - 10 episodes for Felicia?!  I didn't think their seasons were much longer than that.  She must be showing up soon.

Geekyfanboy

They are like BSG.. they do 10 up front then break for a few months then back again with the back 10 or so.. she will be in those.. she goes up in a month I think to start filming.

Rico

Actually, that isn't exactly true.  They do break up the seasons but season 1 only had 12 episodes, season 2 had 13 and season 3 was finally up to 18 episodes.  But in any case, it's nice to hear Felicia will be there for a good chunk of season four.

Geekyfanboy

She starts shooting on Monday
