EXCLUSIVE: 'SPIDER-MAN 4' SCRAPPED; CAST AND RAIMI OUT; FRANCHISE REBOOT PLANNED

By Mike Fleming | Category: Uncategorized | Monday January 11, 2010 @ 2:13pm

Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is expected.

My sources tell me that Raimi told Sony Pictures: "I can't make your date. I can't go forward creatively." And, so, once he said "That's it", Sony Pictures co-chairman Pascal and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach decided they didn't want to replace him and instead chose to reboot the franchise. Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I'm told Tobey wasn't upset. "He's made 3 great Spider-Man movies. He's done really well. But he's the kind of guy who, if Sam wanted to go forward, would have been there for Sam and the studio. Absolutely."

Mike Fleming has heard that, from Spidey, Raimi could move to World Of Warcraft, or to The Given Day, that terrific novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Shutter Island and Mystic River. Both are worthy projects, but World Of Warcraft is a huge franchise.

Wow, huge news.  I have to say I have mixed feelings. Tobey was an awesome Peter Parker, I'm really sorry to see him out, but Raimi seemed to be heading down the same road the Batman franchise did with its last two sequels before the reboot.  I am a giant Spiderfan, so I am very interested to see the direction this reboot takes.

However they do it, I suspect I'll wait for it to come to TV.

I've really enjoyed the Spiderman films thus far but I'm just not interested in seeing someone telling the same story again, whatever spin they put on it. I guess my views may change as and when something comes to screens but at the moment I'm pretty fed up with people rebooting everything.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

"Spider-Man" Reboot Slaps On The Clearasil

"Spider-Man" Reboot Slaps On The Clearasil

With Marc Webb now officially signed on to direct the "Spider-Man" reboot, further details have begun to emerge about Sony's new plans for the webslinger franchise reports Risky Biz Blog.

First up forget every casting rumor you've heard, getting the director locked down was the first priority and now that he's there, only now are attentions being turned to casting the Marvel superhero. Webb himself is only signed on for one but with an option for at least two more.

The biggest surprise is the budget. The initial production estimates have the budget standing at a very modest $80 million. To give you a comparison, Raimi's first "Spider-Man" in 2002 cost $140 million while the third film cost $260 million.

How in the hell can they keep the cost down? The cast will be relative unknowns, while the storyline will not be based on the classic comics of the 60's which Raimi used but rather the recent "Ultimate Spider-Man" run by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley.

That series was as much about high school angst as saving the world. The villains are likely to be adapted to better fit that environment, while the character progression will likely be a lot slower to allow the studio to spread things across more sequels.

This sounds absolutely terrible.  While Ultimate Spiderman was a halfway decent comic, particularly early on, it's not what I want from a Spidey movie.  Kind of like the direction the Amazing Spiderman comic series has taken ever since the Brand New Day reboot, Marvel seems intent on alienating every adult fan this character has managed to maintain over the years by creating a product specifically for young teens.  I am really disappointed.

I love this direction! I think it will do well to keep the franchise alive while getting back to the roots of the character's early life.

Wow, you mean there are people over 21 who actually buy movie tickets?  I am beginning to think we have all gone on to Renewal - like in Logan's Run - and only Angst Ridden Teens are left behind..

I'm really going to miss the old cast.  It seems too soon to "reboot" this franchise.

Woah, this has "Too Soon!" written all over it.  Maybe they can pull it off, but I'd say they shouldn't.  Its a foolish move imo.

Guess we'll wait and see.

I really enjoyed the early ultimate spiderman and I wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen

I guess the real problem for me is coming to terms with the feeling that the new Spiderman movies aren't going to be made with me and my demographic in mind any more.  It brings to mind the uproar over the changes made to the Star Wars franchise with the prequel series.  Many of the older, original fans of the those movies felt, and still feel, that those films should have been made with them in mind and were shocked by the perceived "kiddifying" of the movies. But George Lucas seemed to be making those movies for a new generation of fans.  From the perspective of the companies financing these products, it makes perfect sense to target your appeal to the group that is going to be buying the most tickets, toys, and related merchandise over the next two or three films.  As a long time fan though I am more concerned with the effect this direction is going to have on the story, characters, and overall lore than the financial bottom line.  The article that Kenny posted gives the impression to me that the studio is shooting for the Twilight crowd instead of the comic book geek.  That hurts a lot.

As I said, I liked Ultimate Spiderman too.  I liked it alot more than I do the current Spiderman continuity in the comics.  Bendis is a talented writer and I would have some excitement about this all if I read something about his involvement with the script for the new movie.  It still could be really cool.

I like "Ultimate Spider-Man" too, however in comics it's easy to do various "versions" of a character.  Honestly, there are too many various Spidey books, too many Batman books, X-Men, etc. put out in comics each month.  It dilutes the business.  But, in movies I doubt we will see "original" Spidey and "Ultimate" at the same time.  Add to that it's only been a few years since the last film I think this is the wrong play at this time.  "Star Wars" had been gone for many years and a generation of new, younger fans were there for it.  In any case, we'll see how this plays out.

Looks like I need to research 'Ultimate' Spider-Man a little more. It is WAY past my time as a comic book collector.

I'm hoping this reboot will be a chance to correct the mistakes made during the Raimi years.

British actor Andrew Garfield cast as new Spider-Man.  Read on:

British actor Andrew Garfield is to play comic book superhero Spider-Man in the next outing of the film series, it has been announced.

The 26-year-old, raised in the UK but born in California, will begin work on the new movie in December.

His previous credits include last year's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus alongside the late Heath Ledger.

Former Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi departed the franchise after making three films.

'Rare combination'

The new instalment, to be shot in 3D, will focus on the formative years of Peter Parker, the unremarkable youth who - after being bitten by a radioactive spider, is transformed into the superhero.

The movie has yet to be named.

Marc Webb, who will direct Garfield in the film, said of the new star: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents.

"He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."
Andrew Garfield Garfield starred in an episode of Doctor Who set in 1930's New York

Spider-Man producer Avi Arad added: "We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Garfield, who was revealed to the press as the new Spider-Man in Cancun, Mexico, has a wealth of British TV roles to his credit.

He won the best actor Bafta in 2008 for his role in hard-hitting Channel 4 drama Boy A.

Brought up in Surrey, his other credits include Doctor Who, Sugar Rush and Channel 4's Red Riding trilogy.

Interesting!

Let's hope they go for more of the original origin elements. Already noticed 'radioactive spider' in there. Gone is the silly hybrid spider from the previous incarnation!
