Tom Hanks presentation of the U.S. space program "From the Earth to the Moon" and his movie "Apollo 13" where great, but not exactly sci-fi.

On the other hand, there has been a lot of science fiction/fantasy flicks made lately .

It's time for another round of contemporary sci-fi movies - based a little more on scientific reality or "sci-re"!
A short list of examples:

2010
Silent Running
Marooned
Mission to Mars
Red Planet

Of course these movies had their faults as well. As one IMDB user commented about Mission to Mars strengths:
"The cinematography was astounding. Imagine Lawrence of Arabia lensed on Mars. Professor Jenkins from Scientific America was correct when he said that the images from the film were identical to those photographed from the actual planet. And that is not a small feat."

Another pointed out
"There are major problems with what could have been the best aspects of this film. The spaceships are remarkably flimsy and poorly designed, but they look great! The safety protocols for the mission, about which we hear so much, are either not followed or incredibly naive"

So no one's perfect...
