Does anyone here like the Alien movies?  There are five with a sixth movie coming out this December.  The original movie is fantastically original and intense.  The sequel is more of an action movie.  The third movie is depressing, but it does bring the saga to an end.  The fourth movie resurrected the series and is nicely titled Resurrection.  For the fifth movie, the studio decided to do a crossover movie featuring Aliens and Predators since the studio owns the rights to both film series.  Sigourney Weaver declined to sign on as she found the crossover concept to be silly.  This lead to the movie being set in the present instead of the future.  The movie comes to a solid ending, but there's a nice scene just before the credits that leaves the door ajar for a sequel which is currently in production for a December release.  For those who haven't seen all of the movies, here's a list:

Alien
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection
Alien vs. Predator

The fifth movie is a prequel, but I recommend saving it for last.  Watching it first will spoil a lot of revelations in the first two movies.

The only one of these films I cared for was the first one. I think it is one of the finest examples of a horror film ever made. I have not seen Alien vs Predator and have no desire to. The other films were fun but really not my cup of tea. I'm really not into horror that much unless it's classic horror like the Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein etc. I prefer straight sci-fi.

Indeed, that first film is by far one of the scariest movies ever! :o I can see how you wouldn't like Alien 3 & 4, but why not Aliens?  Most people who like the original movie seem to love the sequel.  I'm surprised you didn't like it, so I'm quite interested as to why. ???  I wouldn't recommend Alien vs. Predator since you don't like the sequels.  It's in the style of Alien 2 & 4.

I'm not really into horror either unless it's a monster movie which I would classify Alien as.  As for prefering straight science-fiction, I agree.  However, I never really thought of the Alien movies as being science-fiction.  There are science-fiction concepts like space ships, aliens, colonizing other worlds, and so forth.  However, the focus is on surviving the alien creatures, so I would classify the movies as horror.

I definitely agree the 3rd one was depressing.

The first was a horror film which I found kind of boring.

The second was a great action flick and the best of the lot.  The second was worth putting up with the first.  But the 3rd really pissed me off.  If I watch the 2nd one now it's like, "Who cares, they're all going to get killed in the next flick."  I try to not think about the 3rd one.

These are what I regard as marginal sci-fi.

I guess you don't like slow movies?  I don't mind a slow movie so long as it builds up to a great ending.  Alien did just that, for me at least.  I agree, Aliens is the best in the series.

Why let the 3rd movie ruin the 2nd movie?  That's stupid.  If you don't like the 3rd movie, ignore it, and just enjoy the first two movies. :)

That's because they are horror movies with a science-fiction setting, they're not ment to be hard sci-fi flicks.

ALIEN was a masterpiece. I can vividly remember when it was released in theaters. I was only 10 and couldn't go see an R rated film, but Heavy Metal comics had a comic adaptation and there was a movie pic in pictures and I was enthralled by the look of the movie. When it came out on Betamax later that year and I finally saw it, I was already an expert on the strory. I must have watched it dozens of times.
When ALIENS came out, I was in high school and went to see it with my Dad. We loved it, it's one of the most fun action films ever for me. ALIEN 3 was really interesting. Slow, depressing, moody. I loved some of the actors and enjoyed their performances and though the dog alien conceot was neat. Not a great movie, but it not bad, just wierd.
The rest have sucked so badly I feel embarassed for the franchise.

Loved the first two very much.  After that it kind of went downhill.  I thought the 3rd movie had some very interesting things but a lot of wasted potential.  I'd love to see a return to the glory times of the first films for this series.  Like how about a visit to the Alien home world?

Yes, and could we please have an Alien film that DOESN'T have Bishop in it?!!!

OK, I have to admit something.

I really enjoyed Alien vs. Predator.

Let me explain.

Many of you know that I am a pretty big stickler when it comes to language and sex in a movie- I tend to not watch stuff that has a lot of "f bombs" in it and I have made a commitment to not watch stuff with nudity and junk in it.  It's a personal conviction.  So with a lot of the science fiction movies, there isn't a lot of skin in them and if there is,  I wait for them to be edited for TV and then watch them.  But I got a cool little device called "Curse Free" DVD player.  And it uses the closed caption system to remove the cussing and stuff in the movie.  It works for me, and so, my sons and I rented Alien vs. Predator.  Besides the gore, which was crazy, I kind of liked it.  It was predictable but a bit campy.  The sets were huge and the effects I thought were kind of cool.  I'm not sure why I enjoyed it so much, but it was kind of cool.

:)

I am also the one that really enjoyed the first season of TNG, and I liked Buck Rogers in the 25th century, in fact I just orderd the whole series on DVD for $25.  WOO HOO!  Should be here today!

Alien was good.. I was young when it first came out and it was slow.. a bit to slow for me.  But then Aliens came out and that was awesome.. by far my favorite of all of them. Aliens 3 was a disappointment, like it was said here, they go through the trouble of saving Hicks and Newt and in the first few minutes  of the third film they are dead, I just didn't see the point.  I enjoyed Alien 4, I think it was trying to go the Aliens route  with alot of action but didn't quite reach it.  And  A vs P was a fun movie.. simply story and cool effects.

I know they are making another A vs P II but I thought the fifth Alien movie is just in the rumor stage.

PS... Moyer, I too really enjoyed TNG season one and Buck Rogers... so you are not alone on that. :)

Bryancd

My problem with Alien 4 was I didn't like the Ripley story line, I really disliked the little mercenary band, they were so contrived, and the scientists were jst wierd. On top of that, this was the movie they really ruined the alien's themselves. Nothing was creepier than the original ALIEN. The one's in ALIENS needed to be fast and slick, so that was ok, but here they are they actually growl and act almost like people. Big thumbs down for me.

Chill dude, he means a 5th ALIEN film, not AVP, we consider them 2 different franchises.

Geekyfanboy

Thanks Bryan... yes there is an Alien franchise (which they made four movies), there is a Predator franchise (which they made two movies) and then they combined the two and made an Alien Vs Predator franchise.. three different entities.
