In a big whoops, a judge just told the FBI that the Megaupload may never see the inside of a court room because the FBI didn't do the proper procedures.  Also, the High Court of New Zealand said that the court order used to seize Megaupload and its property was null and void.

Way to make us look good guys, by completely overstepping our authority and jurisdiction just to bring these guys down.  Surely this won't make us look corrupt or anything  ::).

It doesn't matter, they effectively killed it under the disguise of due process. Mega could counter sue for damages, but would have to prove then that none of their customers were pirating because you can't claim lost revenue from turning a blind eye to theft. So, even if it doesn't go to trial, the gov won. Megaupload is no more.

Hmph.  And in its place is 100 copies.  I'm not exactly sure what the government won.

They killed a company without even having to have an actual trial. Just the indictment destroyed the company and it's probably something they can easily do to all of those clones of it.

What worries me, is whether the government will do the same thing to YouTube, Dropbox, iCloud, Gmail, Wordpress, or any other file-sharing website simply because it has the potential of sharing content illegally.  What happened to Megaupload seems to suggest they will since even our own government won't follow its own or other countries laws to do what it feels is right.  Rules be darned and all that.

Dude, really? C'mon. What was the purpose behind the "company" Megaupload? It's INTENT was to aid in the piracy of stuff. Big difference between that bozo "company" and iCloud, or YouTube. You're kind of doing the crazy conspiracy theory thing now.

I thought Megaupload was a do-it-yourself file storage/server vendor?  I disagree that the purpose of the site was to aid and abet piracy.

If a property owner is renting out ther space and the renter commits a crime, is the property owner criminally responsible as well as the perpetrator?  That's the question that would be answered at trial.  Unfortunately it lookis like the question will now not be answered because of the crazy way US authorities went about their arrest of the owner and seizure of his company.

Whatever the "intent" of Megaupload was, I find this whole thing fascinating.  It was pretty obvious that the Feds were standing on pretty shaky ground with this but they got the desired effect - in that many file sharing sites shut down on their own.  I guess when the US government comes knocking people get scared - even if they live in other countries.  :)

I am not blind to what Megaupload's uses were and that there is a high possibility it was ignoring or even encouraging piracy in some form or fashion.  The point I'm trying to raise is that no matter how we look at this, the Feds ignored our laws to get their way.  Just because the company was a shady one doesn't make it any less wrong.  And that is what concerns me. And it could happen again, with one of our legitimate services, if we allow the Feds to just simply get away with it.

Megaupload was a file sharing/storage locker service.  Dropbox is a file sharing/storage locker service.  Technically, they are both the same its just different how each of them do so.  Whether Megaupload was intentionally encouraging piracy is up in the air and until they are declared guilty of that fact, well, it stands thus.

Tim wake the flip up dude. You think THIS stuff is NEW? This "black-op" behind the curtain stuff has been going on LONG before you were even thought of. Some of the stuff that goes on "shady" is the stuff that keeps you safe and allows you the opportunity to complain about government. The stuff that happens to behind the scenes to ensure your safety would make you crap  yourself if you ever knew about it.

So, you think that this jackass megaupload company is some sort of new "infringement of civil rights" and you're very ability to stream movies and TV shows you "found" is in jeopardy, but guess what? This has been going on for a LONG time. I don't care who says WHAT, this guy KNEW what his "services" were being used for and if not, so what? If HE was in CHARGE, it's his DUTY to know what the flip is going on, PERIOD. If I owned a book store and 'someone' was using my back room to sell drugs, no court in the universe would find me innocent. My store, my responsibility. You telling me if you ran a business you wouldn't know what was going on with it? Especially in an industry under such scrutiny? Sorry, but "watch out for big brother" isn't going to excuse this one. He's guilty. He aided AND abetted, and most likely even encouraged ILLEAGLE file sharing. PERIOD.
