Remind me... is Vanguard a straight soldier? I played an Adept the first time... It was pretty hard... I had to make sure I  chose the right people to go with me and use them extensively. One thing I learned was to max out everyone's health or medical ability first.

Vanguard is half soldier half biotics. I have a half soldier half tech (Garrus) with me and a full biotics (Liara). We're all in light armour at the moment.

Make sure you focus on the soldiers she throws at you first, clear them all out and once they are dead open up on her.  That's the strategy that worked for me.

Maybe that's why it's harder... at least that's what I've read in reviews. I was told not to use Garrus or the big giant grouchy dude (sorry I can't remember his name). Liara is good. And Joby's right... throw everything you have at the soldiers, and run... run away... find cover and keep moving. But you probably already know that. It's just freaking hard to get past that level.

I used Liara, the full biotic and Tali the full tech to accompany my Vanguard.  I liked having the tech abilities available to me for hacking the Geth and taking out shields and weapons, and didn't have to touch those skill areas at all on shepard.  Also, I read that if you take soldiers with you or others that have high weapon skills you will find that they do all the work for you taking out enemies.  The combat was the most fun thing about the game for me and I didn't want my NPC companions stealing all my kills.

Hm I guess I'm having a few issues figuring it out, I usually have to run the big fights a few times until I get the right strategy down. I guess I should stop switching between this game and Halo! My issue might eb I'm trying to play it too much like an FPS and not thinking the fights through properly.
