I'm finally reading "A Princess of Mars" which is the first Edgar Rice Burroughs book about John Carter.  Fun stuff!

I really enjoy the Barsoom books by ERB. You have to admit that for the time period he wrote he had quite an imagination. A Princess of Mars was actually his first book. but was called by another title in serialized form in a pulp fiction magazine. He also wrote Tarzan of the Apes the first year. I have always enjoyed his books.

Currently I'm reading Eon by Greg Baer.

Just finished my re-read of the Hobbit, the cracked yellow page copy of my youth, not sure what to read next. I have several Pratchetts, a ton of Warhammer 40k novels and a few zombie novels to catch up on. Trouble is I'm studying at present and picking up books I will get hooked into is not a good idea. Good job George Martin takes so long to write his or I'd really be in trouble with another Game of Thrones epic to read

I recently read a couple more graphic novels. One is brand new and the other came out in the mid 70's.
Avengers X-Sanction - 8. Takes place right before A vs X. Fun quick read.
Superman vs Muhammad Ali - 8. I always wanted to read this and finally got it from the library. I got an updated version so the art is done in the modern form not the way it was done in the 70's. It was a story that could have been done today with just replacing Ali with The Rock or someone along that line. I don't know any current boxers to use as an example. Worth a look if you get the chance.
Now reading 'Custer' by Larry McMurtry. Interesting book with many pics.

I did finish Custer and it was a pretty good book. I also finished a Marvel Illustrated graphic novel of 'The Last of the Mohicans'. Now I'm going to try and get caught up on some of my magazines and comics.

I am reading 'Catching Fire' - since I want to be up to date before the movie is released.

Hmm, I have always wanted to read The Shining.  I have only seen the movie.  I'll have to pick that one up.

I'm reading "Ash" by James Herbert. All about a paranormal investigator, looking into spooky goings-on in a remote Scottish Castle. A kindle bargain at £0.20 in the Kindle store! And a good read!!

it's quite different than the Stanley Kubrik movie, a definite classic and one of the books that made Stephen Kings career. King has always disavowed the film version but i think both the book and the film are excellent.  I just heard about an interesting documentary called "Room 237" which covers a group of people that almost religiously study the movie version of the Shining to look for secret clues and hidden messages they claim the director put in the film...some of the theories are pretty crazy.

Currently reading this months Star Trek book. It's another Original Series based book by a newcomer to Trek... Tony Daniel. And I must add another mediocre Star Trek novel. The prose is about the quality of a 1940s pulp sci-fi story. The basic premise is that an asteroid is on a collision course with a planet with a human colony of about 20,000 people. Kirk and company arrive at the planet to try and help evacuate but the population is determined to stay and have been preparing underground shelters for their hopeful survival. Of course Spock estimates that the chances of their extinction are almost 100%. The crew learns that the existing population has been genetically altered to survive on the planet and they are now biologically tied to the planet and thus cannot leave for longer periods than a week or two. The asteroid is too large and moving too fast to destroy it and thus all looks lost until Spock comes up with a possible longshot.....the Horta! Ooh! Like we didn't see that one coming!  :o

I have read some pretty good books which have the Horta involved. So I think this could be interesting. Based on your review Ktrek it seems to be a basic asteroid heading to a planet story with an obvious ending. So is it worth my 8 bucks?

I collect all the Star Trek fiction books released and so I spend the 8 bucks each month regardless. I'm not quite finished with the book but based on the quality of the writing alone I would say your money would be better spent elsewhere. The book is closer in style to the throw away Trek books of the 1990s. Episode of the week type story.

If you have not read the Star Trek Next Generation trilogy called Cold Equations by David Mack I would highly recommend those. Wonderful writing and excellently woven stories. They are worth every penny and a series I can easily see reading more than once. That said though to get the most out of them it would be advisable to read TNG book Immortal Coil by Jeffrey Lang. It was released about ten years back and may be hard to find new but an ebook version should be available. David Mack picks up many of the elements that Lang laid the foundation for. It's not necessary because Mack gives you enough information for you to follow without having read Immortal Coil but your enjoyment of the series I think would be greatly enhanced if you read Immortal Coil first.

I would also strongly recommend the Voyager relaunch books that Kirsten Beyer has done. Christie Golden was dropped when her VOY book sales declined and Kirsten was asked to try to pick up where Golden left off and fix things and she has done a marvelous job. Again though to get the context of where Kirsten takes Voyager it would be good to read Golden's last four books, which are...Homecoming, The Farther Shore, Spirit Walk books one and two. They are not necessary and they are all quick reads and not so well written but they do lay foundations for the post return of Voyager to the alpha quadrant and Beyer takes advantage of what she was left with and does an excellent job moving the story forward. Beyer's books actually make you miss Voyager and you come away from every book wanting more. Her books should be read in the following order:

Full Circle
Unworthy
Children of the Storm
Eternal Tide

She has another book coming in the series later this year.

I hope that is helpful to you. I can make other recommendations as well if you like.

Thank you! Great recommendations. Looks like I need to get back into the Trek books. Been reading to many graphic novels.
Currently reading Stormwatch which is from the New 52 and features the Martian Manhunter.

Christie Golden wrote some pretty entertaining D & D books in the Ravenloft universe, I might check out her Voyager books if I can find them.

Right now I'm reading the Family Corleone, a prequel to the Godfather films. Enjoying it so far.
