Well I am loving my recently acquired pad. Thanks to Rick and Tim, I have some cool apps and a nice case.
Oh, enjoy it.  I love mine.

I have been and always will be, your friend.

If you guys want to write on your iPad, Penultimate is a good one for me so far.  I bought it mostly for math class since the keyboard....doesn't quite do so well there.

It works really well, even with my terrible handwriting skills ;).  At $1.99 its a good price, it also has in-app-purchases for more page backgrounds, though you'll probably not need them.  iPad only right now.

Also using Pages and Todo for college as well.

So I'm tempted to get an iPad 2. I know you guys love them, but they cost so much. I'm just so frustrated after my laptop has failed on me and my iPod Touch would seem to be about to stop working too. I need something mobile again, I've considered maybe a cheap laptop, but I just don't want to do that either. It's so frustrating right now without a laptop, cause I have my online PT course to do and I'm stuck in one spot, also half the time being without my iPod Touch. And I don't want to spend to much of my harvest money cause if I don't find a real job soon I don't know what I'm gonna do. So I'm tempted, but I also have to think about the future and just having food to eat. Is an iPad 2 really worth it and capable of handling all the things I might need it for?

KingIsaacLinksr

That really depends, but the answer is usually yes ;).

If you want, you can talk to me about it on skype daniel, otherwise I'm sure we can answer your questions here.  But give us a list of what you want to use it for.

I know I need it for studying, reading PDFs, I'm sure it could do most of the stuff I wanted. I've always worried a little though that there is stuff I can't do because it's all just synced up with your own computer, but I do have my Mac (dead screen) desk computer setup so I know I have that too. I know I could probably make it all work, but it's such a big decision to me, but I'm in desperate need of something that I can carry around with me. I just don't want to get myself into trouble and over spend my budget.

Another question is the storage size. Does it fill up pretty quick with videos or music, or whatever. Is 16 GB an ok working size to you guys?

billybob476

I have a 32 gb and it isn't even close to full. Another option if you want to stay on Mac is a MacBook Air for 999.00. The ipad can pretty much do whatever a computer can, you just may have to go about it differently at times. If you're typing up papers, Pages is a great app. Printing from it is a bit odd, you'll probably find yourself emailing things out so you can print them from your desktop etc.

It's great for PDFs though I tend to stick to my Kindle to read books as the backlit screen gets to me after awhile.

Another thing to keep in mins is you have to buy apps. The iLife type apps (Pages and Numbers) are 10 bucks each and apps can cost anywhere from free to 20 bucks. Most come in around 5.

KingIsaacLinksr

Mine is currently filled with a lot of photos, which is my fault since I don't really need them.  Also, game apps tend to be slightly munchy on HD space.  (Go figure), but those are the 3D, expensive ones.  Games like Words with friends aren't that big.  If you get 16GBs, just realize you'll be limiting yourself.  It all depends on how much music you want on it.  There are apps like Pandora now that can help too.

The studying depends on how you study, I can use mine for studying and books and such, if you can find the digital version of your books.  There are plenty of apps for reading PDFs and iBooks also can read PDFs for free.  With iCloud coming, you won't need to worry about syncing to your computer much anymore as it will all be handled wirelessly.  Though I'm sure the option to sync via iTunes will still exist in iOS5.0.

I'm using up a lot of my iPad, but that's mostly due to a few games, my attempt to put my gigantic music library on it and some vids.  You'll have to figure out how much space you'll need for you music and such, and then leave extra for any apps you'll want to use.

Oh, I forgot about this.  If you do not have an AirPrint-enabled printer, this guide can help you get Airprint working on whatever printer your using.  I have it setup on mine and Rick M's printer.  It does require that your PC be on at the time though.  But once you get it setup, it stays running.  Been running it for a long time now.  :)

I'll figure out what size is best than. And to Joe I wouldn't mind getting a new laptop, but if I were to get one I'd really prefer to have an optical drive, cause I have to be able to watch my program releases anywhere. And also if I get another laptop I think I might just have to go with a PC, cause I have had so much trouble with Mac, only killed 2 hard drives, and now the whole thing has issues accept for the hard drive and this is under 3 years of owning it and I can't fix it like I would a PC.

Also anybody know if there is a way to take an already existing Mac OS on a hard drive and put it into a regular laptop to make it work?

On the video note too anybody know of good software of ripping videos off DVDs to put onto an iPad or iPod?

Rico

Dan, if you just a need a portable device for certain things I'd really suggest something other than an iPad - especially if cost is an issue.  Unless you want it for the Apps.  A laptop, or Netbook can do a lot more.  iPads are cool and fun, but I think if your money is tight I'd look elsewhere.

Considering how companies don't like DVD ripping....well, idk, there is probably something out there.

Your going to have a very hard time porting an existing Mac OS onto a PC laptop.  I couldn't even say if it can be done to be honest...

Well that's part of it, my issue is that money at the moment is fine, after harvest I made a lot, but I have been looking for a real job for months now with almost no luck. It's not an issue now, but it could be and I do want an iPad, but I don't want to get myself into a situation, but on the other hand if I buy something else and wish I'd gotten the iPad later if I do get a job I'm stuck with it for a while.

My Program Releases I don't think have the copyright issues and I need to be able to get them onto a mobile device cause when I need to look over or check choreography I can't just go home each time to plug in the DVD.

KingIsaacLinksr

Oh.  Hmm.  Are they DVD-Rs?

I'm afraid I don't have a lot of suggestions for converting Video formats to the MP4 format for the iPad....I think someone on this forum does, but I can't remember.  I can research it later on if you want.

Alright well thinking it over and talking with my Dad as well. I think I'm gonna wait on getting an iPad or an iPhone till I have a more steady income and have everything all squared away. I just don't want to rush into anything at the moment, but I am looking at getting a new laptop like Rico suggested. Found a good priced one, it's a PC and I'm good with that, cause I really just need a laptop or something like that for mobile use.
