By US law online stores are required too charge tax if they have a physical location in your state, so if there is an Apple store in Michigan then the online store will charge you tax.

Yes I know I'm Canadian but through some convoluted employment situations I was requried to know a lot about US e-commerce laws.

I was actually going to ask: "What Online retailer doesn't charge a tax?"  but you beat me to it ;)

Oh a lot of them don't, especially if they are online only. They have to pay tax if they are shipping within the state they are registered.

No major stock problems in my neck if the woods.

They get weekly deliveries, usually sell out and are restocked by the following week. Pretty good for a high demand product.

What's the price in the UK for these?

They start at £399 for the 16Gb Wi-Fi only model.

I'm so tempted!

Doing some math, 399 pounds is about $652 dollars at the moment.  Hmm, that's a fair bit more pricey than here.  They start here at $499.

Yeah, they raised prices on all their stuff a couple months ago for UK buyers.  Something about taxes, I can't remember what it was.  Caused quite a bit of a stir in the tech community too.

Yes our VAT (Value Added Tax) rate did go up from 17.5% to 20% recently but we ALWAYS pay more for electronics products, they don't just convert the price using the exchange rate. Fir example the $99 Apple TV 2 was £99 over here (now £102 with the VAT increase!) :(

Yes, they normally just change the currency symbol on the front but stick with the price.

There was some fuss about car pricing (when compared with the rest of Europe) a few years ago that seemed to be resolved in our favour but that was within the EU and therefore governed by some form of law.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

VAT = Value Added Tax.  So, what value do they add for a 20% markup?  ;)

They make you feel like what you've bought is more valuable because it's more expensive! :D

lol let's not turn this into a debate on socialzed health care! We don't have VAT here (I think that's an EU thing). We just have 13% harmonized sales tax!

Dangelus

I love the phrases our governments use to name our taxes to try and make them sound so benign and fluffy! Lol

Yeah,  I'm not sure I have a sense of harmony when the government takes my money!
