Ahh, again Bryan you are looking at things as black and white.  One of the reasons I didn't get iPad version one was it lacked some things even a netbook has and I wanted (mainly cameras and better sound).  And look iPad 2 should have most of those and maybe more at the same price.  That makes it much more attractive - at least to me.

P.S.  I still think a laptop has definite advantages if you need to type a lot for say your job, etc.  Typing more than short bursts on a touch screen would drive me nuts.  But, of course you can get an external keyboard for an iPad too.

For sure, I can see how for you it may not make as much sense or be as complelling and can appreciate that from a cost standpoint, for someone who can make their own computer, this would be considered expensive. However, for Joe Blow, of which I am one, it does 99% of what I use any computer for witht the exception of high end games.
It doesn't do 20% of the things that I do on my PC, so I guess that's what the difference is.

Bryan - do you use an iPad at work or a desktop?

KingIsaacLinksr

The iPad fills a gap where I need a mobile computer without the weight and issues that a laptop brings for school.  That's my main reason for getting this thing.  And so far my iPhone has worked for school related stuff so far.

Desktop. Because we are registered reps with securities licences working for a broker-dealer, we have VERY limited workstations and VERY monitored and limited internet access. It's a miracle I even have access to Treks in Sci Fi as online forums are genrally blocked. I can't get on the RPF from here, or FaceBook, or any other social media. Hell, even e-bay is blocked! The desktops are purely workstation where we access our corporate mainframe and all our accounts and support stuff, but that's all. It's a closed system. To have a laptop, it must be a work issued or work approved one so they can monitor my e-mails, which they do as well. If we use any PDA or Smartphone, it also must be approved. No iPad here as there's no WiFi. If I had a wireless one I could use it for personal stuff but not here in the office. It's very restrictive.

Most corporate computer environments are locked down pretty tight.  I've generally worked in research for various companies and they keep the network pretty restricted.  I know a few workarounds when needed, but I doubt they would allow an iPad into their system.  Plus, I'd hate to spill paint all over it!  ;)

IE: why 3G is a nice work around ;).

Actually with my less-than-impressive internet here lately, I may get a 3G version as a work around.  Haven't decided.

I thought the Feb 9th date had been debunked a couple if days ago?

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

KingIsaacLinksr

That rumor is debunked.  We have no idea on announcement time.

Who did the debunking?

KingIsaacLinksr

Endgaget is where I heard it but they heard from somewhere else.  The 9 has been there longer than it was found out by bloggers.

However, since we truly do not know when they are announcing the date, it still could happen on the 9th.  But it is not believed that the 9 is referencing that.

Well, for me it's all rumors unless someone official from Apple comes out and says something.  Anyway, I'm guessing we'll find out something "real" in the next few weeks.

Btw, if no one noticed the Motorola Xoom the supposed challenge to the iPad had its priced released during the Superbowl at $800 for a 32GB 3G model.  There is no wifi-only option.  In fact, you have to buy the activation of the data network to get the Tablet at all.  4G is promised to come out in a software update (but Motorola's track record isn't helping this point, they've denied updates to many of their less-than-a-year-old-phones).

I think the Xoom zoomed into a giant wall of stupidity on this decision.  I'm hearing a lot of..."dislike" over this decision.  The price point and the lack of wifi-only is what is really setting people off.  For the record its $80 more than the similar iPad 32GB 3G version, except it doesn't require an activation to AT&T's network.

I think Motorola is trying to sell that its specs are worth the price, I guess the consumers will decide if its worth it or not.  I for one will continue to wait for the iPad 2.0.

Bear in mind that this is just the US pricing you're talking about. The world is a big place...

I guess, but $800 in the US is $800 in the US.  ;).  I'm still unsure what Motorola is trying to pull with their tablet.  Unless this price point is needed to make a profit then that's understandable.  But the lack of a wifi-only option will put a barrier on it that didn't need to exist.
