Looks like a CDMA "Verizon" iPad is coming sometime too.  AT&T must be crying in their cereal today.

In addition to the new CDMA iPhone, Apple will also release a new iPad with a built-in CDMA radio to allow the touchscreen tablet to connect to Verizon's network, the carrier revealed on Tuesday.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Verizon Wireless Chief Financial Officer Francis Shammo reportedly said that his company will sell a new version of the iPad with an integrated CDMA radio. The current iPad with integrated radio is only compatible with AT&T's 3G wireless network in the U.S.

Verizon and Apple previously worked around the issue by bundling a MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot router with the Wi-Fi-only iPad. The hardware bundle started at $629 for the 16GB model, the exact same price as the 3G-capable hardware with direct connectivity to AT&T's network.

While Shammo reportedly spilled the details on the forthcoming CDMA iPad, he declined to say when the hardware might become available. First released last April, the iPad is expected to be updated to a second-generation version in the very near future. The anticipated update is part of an aggressive strategy that would see Apple update the hardware in less than a year, partially to push its FaceTime video chat standard with a camera-equipped iPad.

Cases and mockups claiming to represent the second-generation iPad began to appear online in late December. They suggested that, in addition to forward and rear facing cameras, the next-generation device will also include a larger speaker on its back and a tweaked, slightly thinner design.

There have also been reports of a new CDMA iPad being released in addition to the UMTS and Wi-Fi models currently available. Suppliers in the Far East suggested that the CDMA variant would account for roughly 30 percent of all iPads manufactured.

I really hope iPad 2.0 allows you to connect to both Verizon and AT&T by choice, not by model.

No, but an iPad is huge compared to a phone so it could possibly happen.  I also heard they have new chips to connect to both networks (emphasis on HEARD).

Its just  a dream unfortunately and it probably won't happen in the next gen.

Yeah, you can do it with some jailbroken phones and now that it's legal to do ....

Oh right, forgot about Jailbreaking, but that's only because I don't jailbreak mine.

Boy the more I hear these iPad 2 rumors the more I'm liking it - A LOT!  Latest rumor roundup has included:  a much higher res. display (possibly double the current resolution), an SD card slot, and a mini-display port.  All this plus two cameras and a bigger speaker!  This thing is sounding pretty awesome!

The pictures of what looks like iPad 2 Silicon sleeves have been been published by US-based Apple Insider and it shows some minor but significant differences compared to the current Apple iPad.

There are the usual power button and dock connector slot but also what looks like space for a bigger internal speaker, a hole for a rear facing camera plus enough space for a SD card reader.

Apple Insider also posits that there may well be a cut out at the top where a mini DisplayPort might fit in, one which would allow the iPad to be connected to a HD-ready device.

Conveniently, there have been rumours about the iPad 2 sporting a QXGA screen resolution, one that would allow 3.1 megapixels to be displayed on the 9.7-inch screen of the tablet and would be more than sufficient for all but the largest monitors on the market.

More importantly, the use of a mini DisplayPort would allow the iPad to be connected to the iMac (and other Apple monitors) without any other adaptor.

One could argue though whether it is a classic example of which comes first, the chicken or the egg as Chinese manufacturers may have inspired their creations from leaks in the press which themselves might have been initiated by the likes of Alibaba-based iPad accessory vendors.

The higher resolution is being highly contested right now as ppl can't believe the next iPad can power such a high resolution.  Still, I'm excited by it all :)

True.  But, if they want this to be able to feed and power HD content fed to a HDTV via the mini-display port it will need a stronger graphics chip anyway.  I can see it being possible.  If they can do most of these rumors and keep the cost about the same Apple may finally have a product that isn't so terribly over-priced.

Yeah, a tablet with better resolution than a MacBook Pro?  Heck yea :).

I think it's a fair possibility.  You have to keep in mind what people are using iPads for.  Viewing video, pictures, etc. obviously could get a big boost by higher res.  Even viewing web pages too or video online.  In any case, we'll know soon.

In regards to the iPad, over the last 3 months 7.3 million people had a different opinion about value. :)

That's right and isn't this exactly why I said so many months ago that this product would be a home run when all of you are trying to argue that a cheap laptop is a better option?

Rico

Ahh, again Bryan you are looking at things as black and white.  One of the reasons I didn't get iPad version one was it lacked some things even a netbook has and I wanted (mainly cameras and better sound).  And look iPad 2 should have most of those and maybe more at the same price.  That makes it much more attractive - at least to me.

P.S.  I still think a laptop has definite advantages if you need to type a lot for say your job, etc.  Typing more than short bursts on a touch screen would drive me nuts.  But, of course you can get an external keyboard for an iPad too.

For sure, I can see how for you it may not make as much sense or be as complelling and can appreciate that from a cost standpoint, for someone who can make their own computer, this would be considered expensive. However, for Joe Blow, of which I am one, it does 99% of what I use any computer for witht the exception of high end games.
