Podcast # 361 - "The First Duty"
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:32:53 AM »
Covered this 5th season TNG episode on the podcast today.  Was fun to do since I haven't covered a TNG episode in awhile.  Also I talk a little about a recent movie I watched, some TV & Trek talk along with a new Trekmas song from Rick and much more.  Enjoy the show everyone!

Sorry to hear about the elbows Rick.  I can sympathize to a degree.  I shattered some bone off the radial head of my left elbow several year ago in an accident at work.  Doc told me I was going to loose some range of motion, but I fooled them.  I'd say it was good as new, but I now have a really good built in weather change indicator.  Get well soon!

I enjoyed this episode slightly more than usual.

Basically because of my "Trek Quest". For those who don't know, to ensure that I have seen every single episode, I have been rewatching all of Star Trek starting at the beginning. This I started around the time I signed up to the forum.

I don't want to Trek myself out, and so I will steadily work through a season  and then watch a couple of other TV show Seasons such as a Classic Doctor Who and a Smallville before going back to Trek.

It just so happens that a few days before listening to this episoe, I had watched "The First Duty". Having recently watched the episode really does enhance the listening pleasure. So, cheers for that Rico :)

Great show! The one thing about this episode that always confused me was surley the cadets realized there would be negative consequences for doing the banned manuever. Why would Wesley even agree to that?

Peer pressure. I'm certain he'd have done almost anything to stay in with the "cool kids" like Nick Locarno.

Yeah, I can see that, but it just seems to be something none of them would have wanted to do because of the consequences even if they succeeded. I know thye give mention that Nick wanted to do something spectacular that everyone would remember but if it meant them getting into a lot of trouble, I don't see the risk/reward.

It is a good episode but yes that is a major plot hole. Even if it had worked the stunt was banned so they probably would have faced expulsion regardless.

Poor old Nick had to go and get a new identity to sneak back into Starfleet! ;)

I wouldn't call it a plot hole.  They knew they would be in trouble, but it's like "Top Gun."  You can get away with "buzzing the tower" sometimes when you are the best.  :)

Hi Rick,

Just listened to last week's podcast, and heard about your accident...ouch!  Not a thing you want to do, especially this time of year!  Hope you get better soon.

 :)

Same actor, different character. (It's all about avoiding paying the associated fees apparently).

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Just listen to the podcast the other day.  The one thing I remember from this epsioded is that it had the actor Ed Lauder who played the father of the deceased cadet.  At one time I thought it was him, Lauder that played Gurny Hydick from the Dune movie from 1984.  In other words I got him confused with Patrick Stewart.  lol.
I am going with the best information that I have.
