Because this doesn't fall under the iPad or iPhone thread, I figured might as well make a new one.  The annual developer conference for Apple's products is coming up in June 6th through the 10th.  What's surprising is the announcement that iOS 5.0, iCloud and Lion will be talked about there (announced officially).  Steve Jobs will also be there.  The iPhone 5 will not likely be announced at the event.

Btw, iOS 5 is rumored to have an overhauled notification system with widgets, integration with iCloud, better sharing, and a host of other interesting things.

The updated iWork Suite also gave all iOS devices the capabilities to run the apps, with GarageBand and iMovie soon-to-be-updated.  Which I've been using more frequently now.

It all looks very exciting!

I don't know... Maybe I'm just grumpy today but I don't see much on the surface that looks that great. Of course, there are probably all sorts of little gems in the detail that we don't know about yet.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

GarageBand has been updated to allow importing of audio files! This is great news.

They still need to make it easier to import video into movie though. At first I thought this update had facilitated this but on second reading it doesn't look like it.

Huhh?!?!  You mean you couldn't import audio files into GarageBand before??

I think it's just the fact that no actual details have been released about iOS 5.  I'm kinda curious what the 5 will be all about.  Notifications hardly need a whole new iOS upgrade.  I can't remember what iOS 3.0 brought us, but it was major back in the day, iOS 4.0 brought us multitasking, folders and other nice stuff.  So it should be good no matter what.

@Rico, nope, its a bit nuts, I didn't even realize that functionality was missing.

That depends on how substantial the notifications revamp is. I'm sure it will be more then simply that, maybe we'll get over the air syncing finally?

Possible.  Be nice (I'm assuming your talking about iTunes sync right?).

Yeah, syncing content from iTunes via wifi.

Feathers

I tend to use iTunes as little as possible anyway. It would be nice but it's hardly a whole iOS upgrade.

If we're going for what we want to see here too, how about notifications on the App Store itself? I'm fairly religious about checking for updates but I don't see why Apple can't be just a little more proactive in pushing them out to me.

On the topic of notifications, do you think we're talking about a notification queue here (where the detail of each notification is stored for later access rather than disappearing into the ether). I believe that's the way that WebOS does it and it seems a little more useful than what we have now. Again, not a full iOS version change just for that I'd have thought.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Apparently Apple aquired an ex-Web OS Dev so maybe.

So this is what will be in iOS 5.0.  It will extend to 3rd and 4th Generation iDevices and both iPad models.

iCloud: This pretty much devastates Amazon and Google as far as iOS goes.
Your content. On all your devices.

iCloud is so much more than a hard drive in the sky. It's the effortless way to access just about everything on all your devices. iCloud stores your content so it's always accessible from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.* It gives you instant access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. In fact, no anything required. iCloud does it all for you.
Free gets you a lot.

When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. And that's plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content. Your purchased music, apps, and books, as well as your Photo Stream, don't count against your free storage. That leaves your mail, documents, Camera Roll, account information, settings, and other app data. And since those things don't use as much space, you'll find that 5GB goes a long way.

iCloud automatically backs it up daily over Wi-Fi. But rather than backing up your information from scratch, iCloud uploads only what you've changed. It's quick and efficient, and it makes Backup like everything else in iCloud: convenient and completely effortless.

iTunes sync: Wireless.  No longer attached to the computer via a cable anymore.  Very very nice.

New Notifications!  All your alerts. All in one place.

You get all kinds of notifications on your iOS device: new email, texts, friend requests, and more. With Notification Center, you can keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Center. Choose which notifications you want to see. Even see a stock ticker and the current weather. New notifications appear briefly at the top of your screen, without interrupting what you're doing. And the Lock screen displays notifications so you can act on them with just a swipe. Notification Center is the best way to stay on top of your life's breaking news.

iTunes Match: Thanks to the new iTunes Match service, you can scan and match the songs on your computer. If a match in iTunes is found, the cloud service will automatically add it to your library. It does not upload the song, it just pulls it from the online library of iTunes music. If iTunes cannot find a match, you can upload the song manually. All songs are upgraded to 256kbps AAC DRM-free as part of this process.

Gamecenter gets some nice changes.

iMessage, which will probably kill off the instant messaging market on iOS.  (Think of Blackberry Messenger on iOS)
Newstand: A custom newsstand for all your subscriptions.

Read all about it. All in one place. iOS 5 organizes your magazine and newspaper app subscriptions in Newsstand: a folder that lets you access your favorite publications quickly and easily. There's also a new place on the App Store just for newspaper and magazine subscriptions. And you can get to it straight from Newsstand. New purchases go directly to your Newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background — complete with the latest covers. It's kind of like having the paper delivered to your front door. Only better.

Reminders brings you a simple To Do list, though this doesn't damage too many developers, just the simple ones.

Twitter is heavily integrated into iOS, but only if you have an account, otherwise you'll never see it.

Camera gets a nice update: Since your iPhone is always with you, it's often the best way to capture those unexpected moments. That's why you'll love the new camera features in iOS 5. You can open the Camera app right from the Lock screen. Use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture on the fly. Then press the volume-up button to snap your photo in the nick of time. If you have Photo Stream enabled in iCloud, your photos automatically download to all your other devices.

Head over to www.apple.com to get pretty much everything you need to know.

On a personal note, this update plus iCloud sets iOS into the lead over Amazon and Google again.  Now that the iWork suite has a nice syncing solution, plus all those features mentioned above, it will do everything I had hoped it would and then some.  The overhauled notifications, the wireless iTunes sync, wow.  Just epic.  (Also killed Jailbreaking this update too).

On another note, Lion will also be out and about for $29.99 via the Mac App store.  Wow, $30 for a full OS update?  Microsoft would change $300 for the same one ;)

And on a final note, I am amazed that the Music Industry even is allowing iTunes Match.  This basically allows us to put match any song that might or might not have been purchased via a CD in the cloud.  That surprised me.  Apple must have done a really good deal with them in order to get that passed those money hungry CEOs.
