My one quibble...

I'm sure there are lots of minor issues of continuity between the original movies and the prequals (even more when Clone Wars comes into play) but the one that always gets me is the way that Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) Kenobi refers to Vader simply as 'Darth'.

Without regurgitation of the whole of Wikipedia etc, it just feels wrong as Obi-Wan seems to be using it either as a first name (I think it would have been Anakin if it was anything) or as a mark of respect for his Sith powers (which I think is somewhat unlikely, don't you?)

It's not really a complaint, more an observation of the only jarring note I always find when I watch these through in sequence. (Even the children picked it up this time.)

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Everything he says about Vader is annoying. I mean it's all lying for no reason thanks to the prequels.

It's mainly a continuity issue, but for me there is an easy workaround.  I always view the term Darth as a title, such as Captain.  Therefore, it works for me that Obi-Wan calls him by that.  Since he should feel like he failed Anakin, it might hurt him to call him by his old name.  At least this is the way I reason it out.  I also saw the original "Star Wars" many times when it first came out so that scene and the dialogue is etched into my mind.  So it seems perfectly natural to me.

If memory serves, he only says that during their dual in ANH. Not to belabor the point as to what the proper name or surname of Darth Vader should be, the reality is it was just in the script and read that way with no thought beyond a single movie they thought would be a failure. :)
We can't quibble over something so completely unitentional. If it was done with any forethough or meaning, then yes, I would certainly like to konw why.

True enough, but I generally manage to overlook most of it (it's still a good movie after all). I know why it is the way it is but the 'Darth' just catches me every time.

(Having said that I overlook a lot of it, it didn't stop the family having a discussion about how much R2-D2 knows and whether he could tell C-3PO, and thus everyone else, who everyone is and how they're all related. Be quiet kids! I'm watching the film!!)

Things related to this question have come up many times on other forums I have been on in the past.  You guys all do realized that Lucas at the time the first "Star Wars" film was made had Luke's father and Darth Vader as two separate people right?  This has been documented.  So the whole conversation he has with Luke telling him about how Vader killed his father was literal - not a figure of speech or anything like that.  But later on Lucas thought it would be more interesting that Vader was Luke's father.  So there are quite a few things in the first film that just don't quite ring true.  Just chalk it up to "a work in progress."

Right, the start of retcon! And I agree Mike, it does sound very odd now to hear Ben say,"Only a master of Evil, Darth."

His whole talk about Luke's father is the one that gets me the most. I understand that there were changes, but I don't get why Anakin wasn't just older when they met and a great pilot in the clone wars. I mean it could have been handled that way and not make Ben to look like a liar for no reason, but it seems like lying and cheating isn't against the Jedi path, so who am I to argue it?

Rico

Anakin is a great pilot when Obi-Wan meets him.

Yeah and I think the pod race scene and little Anie in the Naboo Starfighter sort of bears that one out very well.

Addressing Vader as Darth does not really bother me all that much, since there have been other Darth's, so I just view it as a Title, no different then someone who might be a Doctor and addressed as just Doctor instead of their full name.

Yep - exactly how I view it.

When you said that, I immediately imagined Natalie saying it....whether you should feel honored or insulted is entirely up to you ;)
