"Star Trek" Duo Tackle "Ender's Game"
By Garth Franklin Sunday January 30th 2011 08:47AM

After a decade of on again/off again starts, the film adaptation of Orson Scott Card's sci-fi tome "Ender's Game" looks to be moving in the right direction again.

The story follows a child super soldier who plays a long simulation of Earth's fight against the 'bugger' race of alien insects. As the 'game' wears on, he begins to lose his sanity and makes a final and devastating decision that has real world consequences.

Wolfgang Petersen was previously attached to helm the film but withdrew in mid-2008 and reports came later that the entire project had been scrapped in November of that year

Then in September last year came word that Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") has apparently rewritten Card's most recent adaptation of the script and was developing the project as a director at Odd Lot Entertainment.

Now, "Star Trek" and "Transformers" duo Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci look to have come onboard to help in either producing or scripting duties. Orci recently tweeted "Ender's Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?"

Kurtzman is currently shooting his directorial debut "Welcome to People" which Orci is producing. The pair are currently attached to at least four other projects in either a producing or writing capacity, including the "Star Trek" sequel.

Wow!! Fantastic book....if nobody has read Enders Game and the sequels, I highly recommend it. I seem to remember that Enders Game always ran into difficulty because the movie execs were trying to make Ender a 15 year old....Orson Scott Card has always insisted that Ender be a very young child though. Also, it is a difficult book to transfer to screen. But by combining Enders Game with Enders Shadow, it should work...

...incidently, Enders Shadow is my absolute favourite in the series. But you have to read Enders Game first for it to impact properly....

I know other that state that Xenocide and Speaker For The Dead are the better books. I enjoyed them, but found they didn't have the impact that the original story did....

This excites me so much!!

Wow, I love this story.  I wonder how they will change things?  I bet make Ender older.

I listened to the Enders Game audiobooks and at the end of each book, it has a message from the author. Scott says in one of these that every time he has tried to sell the film rights they want to make Ender about 14 or 15 years of age. He has always insisted that it is written into the contract that Ender will be 6 years old at the start and the ages in the book are concrete....some of these contracts have been returned with a clause stating that they will "do their best" to keep the ages correct to the novel. But Scott has always insisted that this be changed to a definitive "they WILL keep the ages true to the book" clause. It is something that, during his audiobook comments, he has been adamant about. It's nice to see a writer insisting his work be true to the novel.....

....that said, I don't know when he recorded the audiobooks and whether anything will have changed since.

I have a sneaking suspicion they will go for the Twilight crowd on this and have some guy named Zach playing Ender..I hope I am wrong..

I never got into Ender, I was going to give it a try then the author opened his mouth and turned me off on ever putting any of my money in his pocket.

Yeah X that's why I refuse to read it.. debated on posting this to begin with but I knew folks would want to know.

I'd heard about that too. His bigoted opinions don't surface in his novels though. I read all of the Enders series because I'd heard how good it was...but must admit that I didn't look into any of his other work. Mostly because of his views.

Rico

The first book I enjoyed quite a bit, but the second book I just didn't really care for.  Very different than the first book.  They have tried for MANY years to turn this into some type of movie but it never worked out.  We'll see this time.

My view is that if you're going to use your fame to promote a bigoted and sometimes dangerous point of view (overthrowing the government to "save" marriage) any money I put toward your success only give you a wider audience on which to spew your hate. I decided not to support any one that decides to use their celebrity to broadcast views that I find offensive.

To each his own. Everyone is entitled to rant, but this is the result of that entitlement.

Rico

If it means anything, I read this book quite awhile ago long before I heard any of the author's views, comments, etc.  I have a feeling MANY people have no clue about any author's ideals or views prior to picking up one of their books and reading it.

Rico, I don't expect people to follow my path at all. I don't mind if other people read and enjoy it. I think I might actually love the story, but the few ideals I have left won't let me read it.

It's one of those things where someone says something really dumb and forget that they have people that pay them for their work. It's actually surprising considering that he's the only person on my banned book list. Oh and anyone that tries to link vaccines to Autism. That's just another dumb move that puts the whole population in trouble. Now that it's been reveal that every ounce of research that went into that "finding" was faked for a law company looking to start a class action, I doubt that it has had any impact on restoring sense. Sorry ... went off on a tangent.

Rico, I don't fault or blame you for anything. Nor do I judge anyone else's reading habits. Someone is reading harlequin romance right?

Rico

My only point was most people have no idea about the views or opinions of strangers they don't know.  Heck, even people I do know sometimes surprise me.  I consume a good deal of entertainment:  TV, movies, books, comics, games, etc.  I feel pretty certain that in all that there are probably many people that I wouldn't agree with on many things.  Of course, I suppose once you do know something it is certainly your choice to decide what to do from that point forward.  I also have a pretty skeptical view of certain things sometimes heard out of context, in the press, etc.  I'm not defending this particular author, I'm just saying most people have no clue about any of this.

I agree Rico.. was about to post the same thing.. I'm sure there are many authors, actors, musicians and so on that are just as bigoted and hateful as this man is. But they are smart enough to not go on record and spout hate all over the place.  I'm very temped to pick up these books as I've heard many many great things about it but like X knowing what I know.. I just can't do it.

Bromptonboy

I don't know anything about his political views.  The only thing that comes to my mind is that I think he is a Mormon.
