I have always enjoyed movie criticism, every since I was a little kid watching Sneak Previews on PBS with Siskel and Ebert.  I like aggregator sites like Meta Critic and Rotten Tomatoes because it makes it very easy to read movie and game reviews, and you can choose to easily read only positive or only negative reviews if you so wish.  Of course I also value my friends opinions, especially those here, but what a boring world it would be if you only heard or valued the opinions of those who thought just like yourself!
It wouldn't be that boring at all when it comes to listening to those opinions on making a decision about spending money on a product. Listening to people that have zero in common with your personal tastes is a waste of time. It doesn't benefit or aid your decision in any way.

I could careless what critics say when they aren't sharing my tastes. It's a serious waste of time. Not only is hearing my friends better, it makes more sense because I can make an informed decision because I know their tastes.

Obviously this is not the thread for this, I'll just say you may be right if you are solely reading a review or critical essay to decide if you are going to see something or buy something.  Then I guess you want to seek out something or someone who thinks just like you, though other than a forum like this I have no idea how you'd find something like that.  But personally I enjoy reading criticism for reasons other than making purchasing decisions, and that's when I would find it quite boring reading only opinions that are just like mine.

Way back in the day I did read reviews more and watch critics on TV, but then I pretty much stopped because for the most part movies are an art form that can really only be judged by you and you alone.  I will say I still occasionally read reviews AFTER I see a film, but just mainly out of curiosity to see what some others had to say about it.  But I never, ever make a choice or decision to see a film based on "the reviews" it's getting.

Very terrible. Sometimes you gotta wonder what makes people do these things.
On a happier note plan on seeing this today at 1. Don't have to play hooky though already off on vacation. Taking the wife and my Mom. My Mom saw the trailer for this when we saw Spiderman and she wanted to go with us. My Mom doesn't like "movies that put her to sleep." Her words. No sleeping during Spiderman and I'm sure there won't be any during Dark Knight Rises. I'll also admit to being a bigger Spiderman fan than Batman so I'll see how I'll rate this compared to Spiderman.

Has Batman become just a glamorized slasher movie?

Poignant article has makes some good points as to where this franchise is going

To be fair, the article is 4 years old and is a response to the last film. Was that film appropriate for children? That's an honest discussion but ultimatley parental responsibility is where the rubber (bat suit) hits the road. I have heard this new movie is very nihlistic as well, perhaps more approriate for adults.

Batman has certainly always been a darker series in general (60's Adam West version aside).

dave, my issue with that article first off is that it's 4 years old and quite honestly nonsence. Let's take a look at the origins of Batman: Young Bruce Wayne witnesses the MURDER of his parents. Bruce Wayne vows VENGENCE on those responsible. Batman is created to inflict damage and deliver that revenge. So, no where ever has the story of Batman ever been about puppies and kittens. It's always been a story of violence and vengence. In fact, there is a very thin line that separates Batman from those he hunts, always has been. So, for anyone to take a young child to see any Batman, I mean REAL Batman not the 60's camp (not that I didn't enjoy THAT iteration), and be surprised that there is wanton violence is really not paying attention at all. In fact, with the Nolan films, never has the advertisments been anything BUT dark. How could anyone view any type of ad for this Batman and NOT know to expect violence?
I for one LOVE Nolan's Batman creation. These movies are much better to me than the semi-campy-want-to-be-dark-comedy that OTHER directors created. I liked Tim Burton's Batman, but let's be honest, too light and cartoony. And let's not even mention Batman & Robin OR Batman Forever...(BLAH!). So, my opinion on the question "Has Batman become just a glamorized slasher movie?" No. NO. NO. It's what it has been since he was born...in my opinion, that article made no good points at all. Just someone who doesnt' like the Nolan version of Batman.
