Hmmm I've been looking for a good deal on the blu-ray boxset only to find that it looks like they are coming out again next year?

From what I can tell the current release are theatrical versions and next year we get the director's cuts. This is a little disappointing that they have done this as both versions could have been included in the current releases. Luckily I noticed before I ordered!

Anyone got any more info on this?

Sounds very likely.  Trek is notorious for re-releasing things.  Ktrek might know more but I'll dig around some too.

I have not seen anything official about this yet. Last year CBS said they would not be releasing the director's cut editions because there were too many issues to make them watchable on Blu-Ray. You never know though. If I hear of any official news I'll let you know.

Thanks guys.

There are a few comments over on Amazon (UK) about it.

I'll keep digging.

I have to believe bigger, and better releases will happen at some point.  It's inevitable with Trek.  The question is, do you want to wait for them?  I've bought multiple versions myself already on DVD.

I think you might be looking at this the wrong way. When they release something, they put what they can on it and offer it. When tech improves or they find something else to add, they do another release. This isn't an attempt to fleece the buyer. If you bought the movie, another version coming out is not forcing you to buy that one as well. They are adding different things to intice the people that didn't buy the first one or people that want the extra stuff from the new one.

Regardless of why they do it, it doesn't invalidate that if you bought early, you still have a nice working copy of a movie that you've seen several times before the new version is released.

From a business perspective, DVDs are not VHS. VHS had a shelf life of a few years before things started going down hill. DVDs don't. Unless you add something new, you start to see attrition on the sales of a project and few resales on it. To keep the market flowing, you have to pace yourself and not give every single thing with the first release.

Like it or not, businesses are here to make money, but at the same time, nothing is forcing you to buy the latest edition. If you do buy it, it's because there is something there that you want.

Meds

Hmm I think people know my opinion and that is they fleece you man. Ooo look this is the special edition, then the directors edition then the ultimate edition and if you are extra lucky a super frak hot sell my house edition with a extra disk full of pictures of the studios cash. ;)
You know what annoys me. What's with this third disc on blue ray but only two discs on DVD. Why not gave a three disc DVD version ad well, ah I know why they want me to buy blue ray. Boo sirs, boo I say.

I tend to agree with Meds more than X.  But as long as people keep buying them they will keep on making them.  I cannot WAIT until physical media disappears completely.  On demand libraries of streaming content is the way to go. If you go by the successes of services like Netflix, Itunes, Apple TV, and Xbox live, as well as the skyrocketing numbers of people who are using Hulu or downloading pirated movies off of the internet, I predict it will be sooner rather than later that disc based media goes the way of the dodo bird.

I can accept that they are in the business of making money but to release the movies again just 1 year later is a bit much.

One of the key problems (and this happened with DVD's too) is we are still in the early stages of this new format.  Therefore, these will be released again and on a regular basis as people jump on board.

P.S.  Joby - physical media will be around a very long time still.  People like to have and own stuff.  Also, there is a ton of the US and even more in other areas of the world that do not have anywhere near the infrastructure to view streaming content to any degree.  I have a good connection and I can't get anywhere near Blu-Ray quality in a stream.  That is a TON of data.

x2, especially on the streaming media model not being anywhere close to happening in a meaningful way that would challenge physical media. I think LucasFilm is desperately hoping that streaming will become more viable and are trying to hold off committing to Blue-Ray, but I think the market will force their hand.

I can't stream DTS or Dolby Digital HD sound I thought. No?
Ripley: Ash. Any suggestions from you or Mother?
Ash: No, we're still collating.
Ripley: [Laughing in disbelief] You're what? You're still collating? I find that hard to believe.
