Long-Lost Animated Buffy Pilot Leaks to YouTube

A never-before-seen demo reel for an animated Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff has hit the web.

Described as the "Holy Grail of the Buffy fandom" on fan site Whedonesque, the three-minute featurette (embedded) picks up right in the middle of the Buffyverse, showing the entire gang back in action.

Originally developed by Buffy creator Joss Whedon as a Saturday morning 'toon back in 2001, the show was never picked up by a network and has long been considered dead in the water.

But now, with the "leak" to YouTube neatly coinciding with the aftermath of Whedon's successful internet miniseries Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Buffy fans are wondering if Sunnydale's infamous Hellmouth will see a new life -- as a internet or DVD release.

Given that the clip first surfaced a few days ago and has yet to be yanked by its copyright owner, the forum buzz could be right and the "leak" could really be a gauge to test fan interest. So far, the clip has tallied more than 80,000 views in four days -- compared to the five-day total of more than 2 million views for Horrible's three-act miniseries.

Although the clip looks like a cross between Disney's spy toon Kim Possible and Batman: The Animated Series, it boasts killer star power: With the exception of Sarah Michelle Geller, the entire cartoon cast -- from Giles to Cordelia -- is voiced by the original actors from the series.

It's enough to give any Buffyite the shivers.

WOW!  That was awesome!  I heard about this long ago too and was said it never came together.  The girl voicing Buffy is very close to Sarah.  Love to see more if they ever do it.
