Fox Streams For Students

In a first for the television industry, Fox will stream the series premiere of its upcoming supernatural drama Fringe and the season premiere of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles online at the same time they air on television, but only for users on college campuses, Variety reported. The move is designed to expose the shows to college students, who are more likely to have computers than TVs in their dorm rooms and make up a key portion of the network's audience.

Computers logging into Fox.com from a college-based .edu domain will be given full streaming access to the season premiere of Terminator on Sept. 8 and the debut of Fringe on Sept. 9. The site will also offer behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews and music videos for college viewers.

According to the trade paper, Fox strategists noticed that .edu addresses were among Fox.com's top visitors and wanted to capitalize on that statistic in order to increase the fan base and early buzz for their shows.

The promotion also comes as Nielsen begins to measure college-student viewing in a limited fashion. Last year, Nielsen started including college students living away from home in its national People Meter ratings. The ratings firm doesn't consider dorm rooms as separate households but includes students who happen to be a part of a Nielsen family.

Fox president Peter Liguori said it's too soon to determine whether the network will regularly stream premieres or regular episodes simultaneously with their on-air runs. "We'll see how this experiment goes," he told the trade paper.

Well that's nifty, that is if I was going to be living on a college campus. My College doesn't have a campus.
