Nice words Bryan and well put.
For me, it wasn't until I saw the full length DVD editions at home that I appreciated them properly. I don't like sitting in the cinema for too long surrounded by noisy ignorant Chavs.
I see the films as one long story as well and cannot see one without having viewings of the others meticulously planned out. But pushed, I would say ROTK is my favourite. It rounds the tale up nicely and If I remember rightly has the most amount of extra clips, The death of Saruman being the highlight.

It was said that Lord Of The Rings could never be put on celluloid in the form it deserved but Peter Jackson along with Weta studios made possibly one of the most stunning set of movies ever.
On the flip side it can also be partly blamed for Star Trek Nemesis not performing so great, it was released within a couple of weeks of Two Towers. Doh!!!!!

That and Nemesis was a bit pants. Yeah i'm with you Tim, damn them Chavs.

If i had to choose, Return of the King would be the best for me.  However, I will only watch the extended edition.  That makes the movie great.  Otherwise, I would go with the first one.  But ALL are great and I cannot wait to see the Hobbit.

You know what makes no sense. I really, really enjoy these movies.

But I haven't seen Return of the King.

*ducks*

How is this even possible.. that like someone saying.. I've never seen Star Wars...

Heh, no...more like someone saying they've never seen Return of the Jedi but loved ANH and ESB.

Here's the thing. I refuse to go to the movies by myself. I was on vacation when it came out and all my friends went to see it, so I missed my chance there. Now whenever I rent movies, it's with my wife. She already saw it as well. She didn't really like it enough to sit through it again. It's on my list of movies to buy (I want the set of three).

So I blame circumstances.

I have to say, like many of you,  I see them as one continuous film too.  I enjoy them all individually as well. The Two Towers has the best battle scene in my opinion. But more than anything, I watch these movies when I want to go somewhere and can't. I like games like Oblivion and Knights Of The Old Republic for the same reason. Watching these films and playing these games are like taking a trip for me. I love the Shire and Rivendale scenes. Who wouldn't want to live there? If I had my way, I'd make David build a round door for our house. It's "impractical" he says. Pishah!   ::)

As you know I'm a chick, and as such, I  like "chick flicks" so of course the movies that involve Aragon and Arwen are on the top of my list...very 'romantical'. Arwen didn't do much in the novels, and I like that Peter Jackson had her save Frodo from the Ring Wraiths... she didn't do that in the book. :(

My favorite character is Eowyn because of the type of woman she is and what she accomplishes in the end. She has some of the best quotes in the movies too:

The Two Towers:
Aragorn remarks, " You have some skill with a blade."
And she replies, "The women of this country learned long ago, those without swords can still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain."
Aragorn asks: "What do you fear, my lady?"
she replies: "A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire."

I enjoy seeing her passion when she argues for Pippin's right to fight for what he loves:
"He has just as much reason to go to war as you do. Why can he not fight for those he loves?" I love the scene where she scoops him up onto her horse and tells him he can ride with her into battle in The Return Of The King.

I feel for her when her affection for Aragon isn't returned, but at the same time, I'm glad it isn't. Arwen and Argon are meant to be.  Besides, I always hoped Eowyn ended up with Faramir.   ;D

So my favorite of the three would have to be Return Of The King, because of Eowyn's larger role in the whole "saving the world" thing. "I am no man!" *slash*   :)

I enjoyed all three films immensely and like others see them as telling one story and thus very hard to pit one against another. I suppose I like Return of the King best becuase it brings the saga to a satisfactory conclusion. The battle scenes are also very awesome. The film I have seen the most is The Fellowship Of The Ring because my wife have tried several times, with very good intentions I might add, to watch all three extended versions as close together as possible but we only ever get through the first one and then weeks and months go by before we have time to get to the series again. Thus we have to start over. We just don't have time like we did when we were younger to devote four hours at a time to a single film let alone three four hour films.

I suppose that's the same reason why Gone With The Wind is in my top ten favorite movies of all time and yet I have not seen it as often as I wish.

Oh man, my wife just does not like Lord of the Rings. Doesn't matter what i say. Last night i watched the extras from fellowship and there was me saying "but why do you not like it?, look at the scenery, the detail in the armor and clothing, the swords. But she replied, its just a walking movie", and then i regretted showing her clerks 2 ha ha. Jen i have to agree with everything you say and this is from a blokes point of view. I really enjoyed PJ's extention of Arwen's character. And i also enjoyed the love story. I said to Kenny last night that i really wanted my wedding to be like theirs, with the clothes and the look. I told that to Natalie last night and she turned round and said "Oh i would have done the medieval style wedding" DOH!!!!

Oh! Too bad, you missed an opportunity to have a Renfest wedding! See, you must voice your feelings even though you fear rejection. :)

Has she seen any of the movies? Or is she against them because the genre doesn't  interest her?

I'm a big fan of these films too.  Might even attempt to do a podcast about them someday - but there is so much in them and involved in the production it would be a difficult task.  Anyway, the first book and the first film have always been my favorite.  I just like how they all come together and before the story and films have to get very serious and very dark.  I think I like the friendship between Frodo and Sam the most.  In the end, it's really what allows them to do an almost impossible task and destroy the ring.  And of course Peter Jackson did an amazing job on one of the hardest adaptations ever done.  Bravo!

The Two Towers is my Favorite out of the three, but I enjoy all the movies very much, and agree with a lot of the others that is all one large story.

I really enjoy large battle sequences in Movies, so the battle at Helms Deep really excited me, and all the preparations they made for war. I also liked the story of Aragorn and the rest meeting up with the Rohan's, and with Frodo and Sam going deeper into Mordor. I guess I am a bit of a Middle movie guy, as The Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones and Spider Man 2 were other movies in Trilogies I liked the most.

Two Towers is my favorite as well.  The scene at the end with the Treants laying siege to Sauruman's keep is possibly the best action scene in any movie, ever.  It's hard for me to separate the three movies obviously, because to me it is one continuous story and really should be seen as one, long ass nine and 1/2 hour experience.  But as separate experiences, IMO Return of the King is just too darn weepy for my taste.  Too many scenes of Frodo and Sam crying their little Hobbit eyes out, oh I'm tired, oh my feet hurt, oh I'm hungry, waah waah waah.  We get it already ;)  Fellowship is darn close as my favorite of the three, especially with all the fantastic scenes with Bilbo and Gandalf in the begining and the Balrog fight in the middle, but the sheer action and thrill of Two Towers wins out for me in the end.

She said she found it too long and too slow. I've gieven up arguing ha ha. Well as for the medievil wedding we did look into it for a bit of fun but the cost was amazing, about twice what we paid for ours. So as a deal (last night deal) we're going to have our tenth anniversary as a medievil banquet at out local castle. (Warwick castle)

My favorite LOTR movie is Fellowship. I love how it sets the story and characters to what's to come.

I also agree that it's all part of a big movie, really. Just like the books. Originally it was one huge tome, but the publisher made Tolkien to split it into three more manageable parts.

My second favorite is Return Of The King. That movie kicks some serious arse because it really is a war movie, only set in a high fantasy world.

The Two Towers is also good but for some reason it seems too long. But hey that's just me.

I wonder if she would feel the same about the film if she had watched it with another woman that loved the film? Someone who could actually guide her to see things that a woman could lay hold of and enjoy. My wife loves the films as much as I do and she is the one who usually requested to watch them when we do.

Okay I know alot of you enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies so I thought I would start a thread for them.

To start off.. which of the three films was your favotire and why?

For me The Fellowship of the Ring was my favorite. I really enjoyed the interaction between the nine companions. I think this movie did a wonderful job in setting up the next two.

I liked Return of the King.  It was just amazing.  I like movies where the bad guy loses.  Something prophetic about that :D
