Well, just got back.  I'm not going to say a lot yet but I will say I really enjoyed it.  This is a very different type of movie.  With the handheld camera work, etc. it really gives it a different feel.  The movie zips along at a good pace and has some genuine thrills and chills I would say.  I think most people here and in general will get a kick out of it.  Definitely one to go see soon before a lot of the talk gets around.  Another good reason to see it soon, is this movie is going to be a lot better with a nice little crowd in the theater.  We went to a fairly early showing so it wasn't real full but we had enough to get the audience going into the movie.  There was a big line when we came out to see it too.  So go check it out soon - if you are interested.

P.S.  Lots of movie trailers with the movie.  The Star Trek one was last, just before "Cloverfield."  It looked very cool.  I'll admit I got goosebumps!  Even for such a short trailer, it was great to see the words "Star Trek" on the big screen once again!

That is so awesome!  I can't wait to see Cloverfield and the ST trailer.  Thanks for the quick update Rico!

How cool!

Ok, now back to moving!

I just got back from seeing this film; pretty entertaining!  Reminds me of a cross between Godzilla, Blair Witch Project, Alien and Jaws.  It had quite a few suspenseful moments, with just the right amount of humor sprinkled in to break up the tension.  I look forward to seeing it again on DVD; there were a few scenes that I wanted to rewind and rewatch in slow motion.

So what does the title have to do with the movie?

wraith1701

Nothing, I think.
Cloverfield is the name of a street near Abram's old office.  He used it as a working title for the film, and it stuck.

 'Cloverfield' pulls down monster $41M

By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The creature-feature "Cloverfield" became the first monster hit released in 2008, debuting with $41 million, a record opening for January, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Paramount's tale of a giant reptile causing chaos in New York City surpassed the $35.9 million premiere weekend of the "Star Wars" special edition in 1997, the previous best for January.

It is slightly mentioned at the start of the movie as a code name.  I knew it would do well at the box office.  Not bad for a  $28 million dollar cost movie.  Good for them.

I knew this was coming!!!

Reeves Scares Up Cloverfield Sequel

Matt Reeves is in early talks with Paramount to direct a sequel to his recent monster movie Cloverfield, Variety reported. If the studio can complete discussions with Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and scribe Drew Goddard, there is a chance that the Cloverfield sequel will be his next film.

Cloverfield, which tells the story of a monster attack on New York City through hand-held video footage, broke the box-office record for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend when it opened on Jan. 18, with $46 million in ticket sales. It fell sharply the following weekend, but not significantly enough to deter the studio from moving forward with a deal for a follow-up film. A likely factor was the film's modest $25 million budget, which it made back in its first two days of release.

I have mixed feelings about this...

I loved the movie, but part of what made it so great was the unique storyline and the way that the story was told.  I'm not sure that the trick would work a second time...

Then again, I don't know; I guess a sequel could work if it consisted of more "discovered camera footage" detailing what happens after the events we witness in the first film.  Maybe they can also add in some military footage explaining the creature's origin...

In any event, I'd pay to see it.

Ok, my take on this movie.  I just saw it today.  7.5/10 stars.

At first I was really concerned this was going to be an annoying, nauseating, and all around stupid movie.  At the end, I was truly in the movie.  It was, just GREAT.  I now have less fears about the new Star Trek movie just because of this.  I feel the monster is cool, unique and that it was just held together well.  Its a great story all around.  I'm not much into movies like this, such as War of the Worlds or camera-based movies.  But this one has to be the best I've seen.

I feel though, that a sequel may not be that great.  Its a great stand-alone movie.  Do I think it will become iconic of America?  I doubt it.  Unless we see as many Clovers as we do Godzilla, this movie won't "give" America its Monster.

All around, I was happy.  But I want to see more and know more.

8 out of 10 stars.

I thought the thing that made it truly spectacular was the handheld camera. It was well done, and integrated AMAZING with the special effects. This movie is short, but there is only one part where it even slowed down and that was for less that 3 minutes. The movie is an hour and 13 minutes in length, but so crammed with action and suspense that it leaves you feeling it was longer.

JJ did an amazing job with the actors, they were all very good, and right out of film school as I recall reading. It leaves you at the end with a bunch of questions, and no answers... But that is part of the appeal of this movie.
