Twentieth Century Fox is apparently not afraid to go up against one of the most anticipted movies of 2008. The studio announced today that it is taking a serious look at December 25, 2008 (Christmas Day) for the release of its remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” which would put it in direct competition for opening day ticket sales against the return of the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise movie under the direction of JJ Abrams.

The “Stood Still” movie was originally set for a May 9, 2008 release date, but due to delays in getting production started and a possible strike from members of the Writer’s Guild of America on the horizon, studio execs have opted for the December 2008 debut.

Twentieth Century Fox also revealed that this remake will be an updated version of the original Robert Wise version and will not be set in a nostalgic 1950’s Washington D.C.

Boooooo.....on the whole concept and the remake itself

That said I think that Star Trek will wipe the floor easily.  I think there are more people familiar with Star Trek than a classic like TDTESS
I think it was Socrates who spoke the immortal words:  I drank WHAT?
