I'm on spring break this week, so my husband upgraded my machine and I've been playing Lord of the Rings Online.  We were in the Hobbit starter area when we ran past a really pale human character...we noticed that his name was Data and he was standing next to Riker!  LOL!  Those players did a really good job of getting their characters to look like the ST characters!  It made me laugh.

My son (Octeris here on the forum) has been playing it while on break too.  He seems to enjoy it, but says World of Warcraft was more fun.

After what Turbine did to DND I'm hesitant to touch any thing of their's again.

I'll do Sony before I do Turbine....

I gave it a shot, and couldn't take it.

Mostly I don't enjoy the fact that you can only play "good" races, and the graphics didn't do it for me.

Alas I am too much of a WoW fanboy to give it more of a shot.
Call me cocky, but if there's an alien I can't kill, I haven't met him and killed him yet.

Yeah, I wouldn't have played it either had I not upgraded my machine.  WoW takes far fewer resources to look good, but LOTRO is absolutely BEAUTIFUL with enough memory and a smokin' video card!  I'll try to get some good screen shots tomorrow and post them here.

Frankly, I like it better than WoW in the sense that the quests really add to the overall story; I think it is the English teacher in me.  I'm playing a hobbit (of course!) and everything I'm doing now is setting me up to protect the Shire from the Nazgûl...I was even up on Weathertop yesterday.  This game makes me want to read the books again!

I think LOTRO is great if you don't mind the story.  I just don't like how in everyone LOTR game you are part of a "side story" with a little bit of room to play or if you play a main character you have to stick to pretty much what the characters do.

I think I have a bias against the way the licence works. Ignore me. :)

A Hobbit huh? I had you pegged as an elf.  ;D
I love Hobbit names. What did you name your Hobbit?

This game sounds like lots of fun. I LOVE Tolkien too. I wish my PC was up to snuff, I'd try it out. Luckily Star Trek Online won't be out for a while...gives me a chance to save up for a better gaming PC.

LOL!  My other character, Chrystabel, is an elf, so you've got me pegged pretty well!

My Hobbit is named Jinnarin based on a character from Voyage of the Fox Rider by Dennis L. McKiernan.  McKiernan's character is actually a Pysk or Fox Rider.  They are much smaller than Hobbits, but I still feel the name fits.

I'm hoping I will have another computer by the time STO comes out, too!

I am allready planning on building up a new PC when STO comes out.

Mine runs WoW great, but I am sure STO has will have some nutty sys req's.

Okay so is there still any LOTRO action?  I'm getting slowly hooked and would like not be server hopping looking for a niche.

Mr. O - you are playing this and Warcraft too?  I'd like to hear your thoughts on the pros and cons of each.

And City of Heroes... ;)

Here's the short form:

WoW vs LotR
WoW has a more polished interface and more flexibilities.
Wow has more room for mods and a larger player base
WoW feels like it has more streamlined questing with not so much travel time (or cheap travel)
LotR has a music system which is fun (though will stale soon I expect)
LotR has a better liscence and for me more engaging stories.
LotR does not have half naked people supposedly in full armor
LotR feels like a more mature player base.

Actually Mrs. O and I are thinking about doing a "what WoW can learn from "Game"" podcast sooner or later here and disect these in more depth.

For now though, I really like the feel of LotRO even if I'm not a huge fan of the grubbier graphics.  I do like that the clothing seems more realistic and the quests, while often spread over large distances have a lot more variety.  Much more "go and protect" or "go and find" than "Bring me 100 livers".

Mr. O - did you ever play Everquest 2?  I really enjoyed that for it's depth and graphical look.  It was just very hard to solo when I was first playing when it came out.  I do hear that's improved now though.
