Scapers rejoice - there's a new movie in the works :)

Rockne S. O'Bannon, creator of sci-fi series Farscape, has confirmed that production is moving ahead on a movie sequel to the popular series, with a script currently underway.

Speaking at WonderCon in California, O'Bannon updated fans on the planned film sequel, saying: "We are, in fact, in the script stage of a Farscape feature [but] still in early, early stages." Rumours of the movie first broke in February, when Justin Monjo, a writer on the original show, told Australian site If.com.au he was working on the script. O'Bannon's statements are the first official confirmation that the film is indeed going ahead.

The original series ran from 1999-2003, and followed American astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder) who found himself catapulted across the universe by an errant wormhole, only to find a new life and family aboard the living prison ship Moya. Left with knowledge of wormholes hidden in his brain, he was hunted across space by enemies seeking to weaponise the information. A US/Australian co-production spearheaded by The Jim Henson Company, Farscape was notable for its use of animatronics and elaborate puppetry rather than CGI, and for being considerably more mature than its genre mates of the time -- it remains one of the few television shows to earn a BBFC 18 rating in the UK. A 2004 miniseries dubbed The Peacekeeper Wars capped the series in brutal fashion, killing off several characters before seeing Crichton marrying his love Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black).

After its cancellation, publisher Boom! Studios continued the series with a line of in-continuity comics, with Crichton and Sun raising their newborn son in the most dangerous areas of the galaxy. The proposed plot of the movie picks up years later, with their son Deke having been returned to Earth and raised in secret, only to become the target of the alien factions his parents once fought against.

Contrary to the norm, the first season of this show was pretty awesome!

Hope we don't have to wait too long for the movie.
