This week I take another look at the music of "Star Trek"  This is the third time I've done a podcast about Trek music (previous shows were #80 and #189).  This time I focus on the 15 CD set of TOS music as well as the music of Michael Giacchino in the last two Trek films.  I play several tracks from each set and try to give you an overview of this great music.  I'm not at Vartok's level of musical completeness but I hope you still enjoy the show.

I really need to get my hands on that TOS set. It's totally up my alley. Just so expensive! Great look at some music Rico, it's amazing what little cues come out in the TOS soundtrack when you listen to it in isolation.

Rico

The TOS set is really incredible. Such a diverse range of music.

Man, I could listen to you playing cuts from that TOS collection all day! Great job. Even though I like the new movie theme, it's so repetitive. you played tracks from '09 and Into Darkness and they are indistinguishable. It's a trend of these single notes, pounding war kettle drums, deep horns that have become so ubiquitous starting with Batman and Inception. Can I just say for the record I am so tired of Nolan worship....

ChrisMC

I do agree that I prefer the classic movie scores to the last 2, you are right, they are a bit repetitive. But Giacchinno managed some nice unique moments like the bit that plays in London with piano, I liked that quite a bit, and that nice tragic music for George Kirk's sacrifice. But give me 'The Enterprise' by Goldsmith ANY DAY. That's film score porn. I need to get a review together of the DS9 soundtrack set I bought this year....

Yeah, the TOS collection is fantastic.  As far a Giacchino's Trek music, I like it quite a bit.  He has a lot of the 2009 film in the 2013 film, but there are some unique tracks.  I thought the track I played set in London was nice & unique.  Also, the Klingon portion had a nice nod to Goldsmith's Klingon music in TMP I thought.  But yeah, we could have used some more different music during more of "Into Darkness."

Bryancd

That's right, he did bring out the clanging sounds for the Klingon's, nice touch. Don't get me wrong, I like it a lot but the more I hear the less special it seems. And compared to that track from the Doomsday Machine and it pails in comparison!

Hi, Rico, I listend to the podcast just last night.  great podcast, I have alwasy been a soundtrack fan myself.  Listening to the music of the oritingal trek eps was fabulous.  the music is so classic.  I think Bartok needs to step in and also do a podcast on the same subject, but where is he when you need him right?  lol!
I am going with the best information that I have.

I just caught up on this one as well. The clip from Paradise Syndrome gave me the chills. I guess I never really noticed before how amazing some of the music from TOS was. Great podcast. I might have to go buy the Giacchino soundtracks.

I'm also a big fan of Soundtrack Music and of course the Star Trek ones. I don't have Into Darkness yet but it is on my wish list! I won't be getting the TOS set so thank you for sharing some of it on the pod cast. Fun podcast with all that great music!

Vartok

Rico, thanks for playing the TOS tracks - wonderful to hear them with such clarity vs. what they originally sounded like over the TV of the day.  Of course back then we didn't mind since the series was so new and cool.  If they ever put that set on sale ....

Going to have to put another composer track together when I get back from Russia.

Nice job Rico! I would love to own that TOS set if I had that much expendable cash. It's pretty cool but it is the Trek I grew up on and it will always have a special place in my affections.

As for Giacchino I have to say that I like the soundtrack to the first film but I don't care for the soundtrack to Into Darkness. I find his music in general (not just Star Trek) to be pretty generic and rather boring. There are so many more talented soundtrack composers out there that I wish Abrams had let someone else have a shot at it this time around. At least there is hope that the next film will have new blood!
