Bob Iger confirms new SW films beyond the sequel trilogy.

Disney To Release Additional Films Based on Star Wars Characters. CEO Bob Iger made the disclosure in an interview on CNBC. He says that Larry Kasden and Simon Kinberg are working on them, and they're in addition to the planned Star Wars 7, 8 and 9. No word yet on which characters are involved.

A Yoda animated film would be pretty freakin' fun. I just know that Johnston has been pushing for that Fett movie, and I can't imagine anyone thinking that it wouldn't make a ton of dough.

Ah I posted my thoughts in the other thread before I saw this one...I think Bradley Cooper would make a decent version of a young Han in a series set a few years before the original trilogy, although he might not be young enough compared to Harrison Ford in episode IV.  A Yoda flick could be sweet but I'd prefer live action/CGI over animated.

This was talked about even back when the Disney announcement happened.  My only concern is quality and a cohesive story.  Disney must have some Chinese film shops ready to go because even Disney itself doesn't put out as many movies as they are talking about doing for "Star Wars."  I think it would be a mistake to put out some smaller SW film prior to Ep. 7.  I want the franchise to come back with a great, big, mega-blockbuster film.  Not something showing teenage Boba or the Planet of Yoda's.  ;)

It was talked about but this is Bob Iger saying it on CNBC, it doesn't get much more official then that. I came away with the impression that these films would be secondary to the planned sequel trilogy, exploring ancillary characters with one off films. I would imagine that the sequel trilogy will aslo introdyce us to new characters who could aslo have their own adventures. A lot of people have been comparing it to Marvell, where you have Avenger style tent pole films with all the characters and then seperate stories branching off from that. I think Disney should explore both mega blockbusters as well as additional film and TV content. At the end of the day, they will produce what the market will support, and I know Jensen and I will be pouring money into the Disney coffers. :)

People really need to stop looking at the "Marvel Model" of doing films.  For one thing, each of those characters (like Iron Man) has decades of comics and source material to pull from.  Also, they created a synergy by doing the character films and then the Avengers and I expect that to continue.  I'm not saying Disney can't make "Star Wars" work like this, but it will take a very careful hand to make sure they don't over extend themselves and overdo it.

Well, yes and no. The overdoing it speculation isn't  fair at this point as there is no indication of exactly how much content we actually get. It's like saying the movie's will be bad because they are made by Disney..or JJ. Let's just assume it's going to be what it's going to be, good, bad, or indifferent. Having said that I don't think it's unrealistic to assume that a film franchise for STAR WARS can't be built along a similar model as Marvel. The STAR WARS universe is pretty well vetted in film, TV, comics, and EU novels. Not to say those non-canon sources will inform the new stuff, but even Marvel comic characters have been reinvented a bunch of times, so I think the analogy is apt. Now, whether or not that's their intent remains to be seen and I think Iger is referring to already known characters in his comment. So a Yoda or Boba Fett film could certainly be a real possibility. The "Marvel Model" I think might be more applicable for the new story and characters. This would also lend itself well to the licensing side of the equation.

No, I would imagine this would be framed sometime in the OT era prior to Han meeting Luke.
