Google Tablet - $199

Well, another tablet enters the fray.  A 7" model coming from Google for $199.

Google Inc. plans to unveil a $199 tablet co-branded with Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. at its developers conference this week, taking direct aim at Apple Inc.'s iPad, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The 7-inch tablet running Android mobile software will be shown at the Google I/O conference, starting today in San Francisco, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. The device will also showcase new features of Android, according to one person, who said the latest version of the software is named Jellybean....

This sounds interesting - actually the whole tablet market is getting interesting with the MS offerings as well.

I'd argue at the price point this is direct competition for the Kindle Fire, not the iPad.

Also, is it just me or is this a Blade Runner reference? One better then the Nexus 6!

Agreed on your first point. And as far a s the name, I think it's just one inch bigger then the Nexus 6. :)

The more quality tablets entering the market can only be good for the consumer.

"Google is about to announce a 7" tablet to compete in the $200 market against Fire and somewhat Nook. Goes well with their recent aquisition of Motorola Mobility. Like I said in that thread, Google is looking to get into the hardware business. I think this would likley make Apple less inclined to also have a 7" tablet. They own the high end and may want to conitunue to differentiate themselves and own that market."

The Nexus 7...

Google today unveiled the Nexus 7, a 7-inch tablet from Asus that will run the latest version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Nexus 7 is available for pre-order now via Google Play. The 8GB is $199, while the 16GB is $249. The device will ship in mid-July to customers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia.
Buyers will get a $20 credit to spend in Google Play, and the tablet will come pre-loaded with the Transformers Dark of the Moon movie, the Bourne Domination book, and issues of magazines like Popular Science, Food Network, and Conde Nast Traveler, among others.
The device boasts a 1,280-by-800 HD display, and runs a Tegra 3 chipset with a quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU. "It's basically 16 cores," Android product management Hugo Barra said today at the Google I/O developer conference.
The Nexus 7 includes a front-facing camera, and "all the connectivity options you'd expect," like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC. Barra promised up to nine hours of video playback on a single charge, and up to 300 hours of standby time. It weighs in at 340 grams....

That is an interesting tablet, but a 12-core GPU? That seems like a massive amount of overkill for a tablet.

I could be tempted by one of these but I'm so embedded with the iPhone, I'm not sure it would really suit my purposes (in terms of sharing software etc between the two).

What's NFC, never heard of that outside of football?

Does this have expandable storage?  Otherwise 8GB wouldn't cut the mustard at all, and 16 would be pushing it.
