No, it wasn't anything you said, I just like discussing the characters. :)

I am about half way through the podcast, great job Rico, really learning a lot about this series, great clips. I am a late comer to this series, as I got the Series just after Christmas on DVD I think for 12 dollars which I think is probably the best 12 dollars I have spent for a set of DVD's (well actually my friend bought them for me, so the best 12 dollars he spent :) ).

Jayne: Is an AWESOME character but he is NOT a good guy. Jayne's in it for Jane and no one else. Even after his seeming redemption of character during the airlock scene, he's a loyal as long as it's in his own self interest and Mal knows it. They did a great job of making him a little sympathetic like in "Jayne's Town" or when his Mom send him his hat, bit what I loved about the way the character was written is just when you want to like him, he makes some horrible comment! It would have been so interesting to see what would have become of him as the series progressed.

I felt the same way about Jayne, that he was out for himself. I think he might have mentioned it a few times, that is someone paid better, he would take that job and leave serenity. He sort of did that when he sold the Tams out in that hospital, but Mal really took care of that situation in the end, which was very cool. Never knowing which way he would turn, made him interesting more so then just being a tough guy.

Rico

Oh, Jayne was certainly out for himself a lot of the time.  But, I think he did respect Mal and really didn't want to cross him if he could avoid it.  Even in the pilot episode Jayne had multiple chances to turn on him but ultimately didn't.  While I wouldn't call Jayne exactly a "good guy", I don't think he's a bad guy either.  Like most everyone of the characters, he's somewhere in between.  And that makes him interesting.

The thing is, when Jayne sold out the Tams you could tell it is something he really, deeply regretted doing. Not just because he got caught, but because he knew deep down that it was wrong. You don't turn on your crew. Maybe he didn't know that when he first signed on, but I think running with the Serenity crew taught him a few things.

...that and being in the airlock didn't hurt to help make him see the light... ;) Actually, if you continue forward into the movie, he still want's to dump the Tam's, so it seems his sense of loyalty was short lived. They likely did that as it was familiar to the audience, I'm sure if the series had progressed, we would have really had a chance to see if Jayne could be saved, but at the end of the series, I still think he was a dangerous man to have a round. What's funny is that Jamie really likes Jayne, so he is a sympathetic character to the audience. Amazing they pulled that off so well, credit to both the writting and the perfromance.

GREAT SHOW!  Finally finished it a few minutes ago.  I really enjoyed the coverage of this.  The comments were so excellent. I also was very blessed by the comments from Bryan AND Jamie!  Very good.  Thanks so much for such a quality podcast.

Finished the podcast, great stuff Rico. All the comments were great, enjoyed Bryan interviewing his wife about the show, great perspective. Good to know that I wasn't the only one the came into this show late, that there are others on the forum as well :). Great Job again Rico, liked all the clips you included as well, really captured the characters and the show.

I would LOVE a 3 hour Treks in Sci-Fi for my long bike training! That's at least 65 miles done and dusted with Rico in my ear!

Rico

Yeah, I knew the length was going to be a problem for this week's show.  Believe it or not, I did leave out a few clips and other things I was going to say.  I think my length "rule" is flexible now.  Some shows will be shorter, some longer.  But my real rule is I just want to keep it all interesting.  It's why I've moved to doing "special shows" like this and not just ALL Trek.  Anyway, that's the deal - at least for now.  ;)

Bryancd

I think 90 min is perfectly fine for geeky goodness.

Bromptonboy

Yeah I never mind the longer shows - since the commute can devour the longest of casts.

Ok, so like I said earlier, I'd never watched Firefly. Caught a few minutes here and there, but never sat down and watched. I got the entire series from iTunes and have been doing a mega-marathon and let me tell  you...WOW! I love that show! I love how it's set 500+ years from now but still has that Old West feel about it. And the fact that they invented a new sub-language for humans is great. Can't wait to get all the way through.  Thanks for doing the show on it Rico and opening another wonder to me!! :)

Rico

You're quite welcome.  Glad I could get you to take a closer look at it.
