I'm sure many of you have seen this now.  Made for $300, the maker has now been given a budget of $30 million (via Sam Raimi) to make a big-budget film.

Yea...this has been showing up all over the web. It looks like it could be a fun disaster film but I have a hard time believing that it cost him only $300 though.

Wow..  I haven't seen that before.. it's pretty awesome.. but like Kevin I can't believe that was made for only $300 dollars.. unless everyone donated their time and facilities to it.

Rico

Not sure why it's so hard to believe the cost of this.  It's basically CGI.  You can do some pretty amazing things even on a home computer these days - if you are skilled with certain pieces of software.  In any case, it's a great piece of work and I'm glad he got noticed.

I find it hard to believe because I have lots of friends who work in the industry and work on webseries who are on budgets and try and do cool SFX and they are no where near as cool as those. Like I said I believe they did it for $300 but lots of that work was done for free.

Oh - no doubt much of the work was "donated" or free.  I am reminded of that "Sky Captain" movie from a few years back.  That was another example of someone who spent years of his life working on a short film, by himself on a Mac.  That eventually led to him getting the budget and greenlight to do a feature.  If you are doing the work without any type of pressure or time limit you can do some very cool stuff.  Think of all the Trek and Star Wars fan films out there.  Usually when they state costs for things like this it's for something physical they had to purchase or maybe rent.  A camera and so on.  In most cases the labor is "free."

I recall reading that the 3rd episode of Star Trek New Voyages was over $40,000.00! And that's not including the over $100,000.00 Cawley has spent for the bridge set. So how could this guy make something like this for $300? I'm skeptical.

It's all CGI. if he's doing the CGI, he probably only had to pay the actors.

As has been said before, this is basically computer generated imagery - CGI.  That costs basically nothing but the software and time.  And time is "free" if you are doing it without being paid and for fun.  When I mentioned Trek and Star Wars fan films, I was speaking for the effects you see, i.e. ship battles, lightsabers, etc.

That's something. I'm sure someone could accomplish this on their own for very little money, although I would also think from a promotional standpoint the creator is likely to be a little loose with his accounting practices to come up with his production figures. Get's better buzz if he makes a claim like that and who's going to check is books? No one.
