I think I remember seeing these on the web.  VERY cool.  Is the back wheel solid to reduce friction?  Why not the front too?

Bryan - do you ever ride the same bike for more than one race?

Why, that'd be like wearing the same dress to two parties! :)

I know, right? I have had two different bike sponsors. Last year was Scott this year it's Orbea. Hopefully they won't change again next year!

The rear wheel is a carbon fiber disc. It's designed for extreme aerodynamics. Aerodynamic trumps even weight in making a bike move fast through the air. A front disc is illegal for racing, not because it's too fast but because it would make the bike almost impossible to handle and maneuver, especially in any cross wind. Even with the rear disc and deep rim front, I can really get pushed around buy the wind and need to be careful.

What happens to these bikes after you race?  Do you train on a different bike then and race on a new one?

Oh, I own the bike, I paid for it as well as the one last year. This is my only bike which I train on as well. The deal with the bike sponsor is they let me buy the bike at 10% off wholesale, about 50% off the MSRP. So this is a $7500 bike I bought for $3800. The same applied to the previous bike from last year, my Scott Plasma. When I found out we had changed sponsors to Orbea, I sold the Scott for about $3500, a little less than what I paid, and flipped that money into the Orbea. At the end of the day, I was out maybe $500 to do the switch. Jamie was a bit peeved at that, but the Orbea ids a better bike and I get so many other deals and benefits from the clothing and nutrition sponsors, we save a ton of $ on our training and racing gear. This sport is a bit pricey on the equipment front.

Obviously being relatively new still, I don't know what kind of riding you do. I assume that if you are talking about cross winds that it isn't in a stadium. Is it some sort of endurance?

(also makes me embarassed when I realise that I rescued my bike from a skip! I really should invest and try and get fit!)

LOL! No worries, mate. :) I am a triathlete and I compete in the IRONMAN, a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. So all my riding/racing is outdoors and usually pretty long on the bike portion of the race. When I train, I don't use these wheels, I just use regular spoke wheels. Much cheaper and easy to fix flats. I ride anywhere from 100 miles to 350 miles per week in training, as well as 30-40 miles of running and 10,000 yards of swimming per week.

I'm tired...a lot. :)

Now that is hardcore...I'm trying best not to show my surprise with foul language :)

I've seen the IronMan tournements on the UK TV channels....thats hardcore fitness stuff! I'm very impressed. Should we ever meet and I don't speak, it's not rudeness...I'm obviously trying to suck in the gut and can't speak!

Best of luck with it all! :D
