I'm still listening to Robert Jordan's Wheel Of Time Series. I'm on the forth book now and I really enjoy them. I listen to them while at work or while working out at the gym. At home, I'm reading "The Lives Of Dax" as a reference for my Trill RPG character, Ryla Drett. It's an interesting read so far. Each story is written by a different author. I think some of them are stronger writers than others (so far the one I dislike the most has won the Asimov's Reader Choice Award, Ellery Queen Readers Choice Award and the SF Age Readers Choice Award all in the same year. She's also won the World Fantasy award, the John W. Campbell and the Locus Award), but I'm trying to look at the story and not their writing styles. The point of so many authors was to make the perspective seem different, since there have been many Dax hosts. I'm only half way through, but it's a good book so far. I'd recommend it if you like the characters of Ezri or Jadzia Dax.

The more DS9 I watch (no I haven't seen them all but I'm working on it) and the more books I read, the more I love about the Trill. The possibilities for stories are endless...It just seems like there would be ALOT more books about them.

I started listening to Percy Jackson & The Olympians, book 1 The Lightning Thief. It's more in the vein of Harry Potter and I'm loving it.

Jen that sounds like an interesting read. I think of the trill race as a bit like the time lord. Many bodies but the same memories that grow and grow. I'm interested about your audio book you are listening to, I've always been honest on this forum and scifi/fantasy books have never appealed bar my comic collection. My own downfall i know but i'm the same with any genre novel (though i did enjoy the few pages of chris's works ;-)). Think I'll do a search for your audio book though Jen, i gather it's best to start with volume 1.

I'm assuming this is the best place to post about audiobooks.

I have just started down the Star Wars EU path. I have downloaed LOADS of titles and asked on another forum where to begin. I was told by one person to do X-Wing series and another said Thrawn Trilogy.

X-Wing series was definately NOT for me. I don't know if it was because a lot of the action is flight combat, whether it's the writing style (seemed a bit childish) or whether it was because the characters are not as well known as the movie ones. Probably a combination of....I got worried and thought all EU might be like this. However, Thrawn Trilogy was awesome. Writing was better. I instantly knew what the characters were abot and I loved it. Now to seperate the wheat from the chaff!

I am also working my way through Orson Scott Card's novels. Enders Game was fantastic. Speaker For The Dead was a bit...meh!

Also, I recommend all of Scott Siglers stuff. I'm a big fan of. He is the shiznit! I hope his books get released over here. (If I order from the mail, my wife has to walk quite a way to the post office and back to collect my stuff as I'm at work. I learned after my first outings on ebay that it better to go with out!!)

Yes, those audiobooks are excellent.  I got all of them at the library and listened to the whole series (and the one prequel) during my commute to work.  Looking forward to 'Memory of Light' - which should be out in October of this year I believe.  The 'ghost writer' for RJ is a pretty good writer in his own rite.

I have forced my self to alternate between a sci-fi book and a mainstream book each time.    'Teacherman' by the late Frank McCourt (Angelas' Ashes) is what I am pouring through at the moment, with Vernor Vinge's 'The Peace War' in the hopper for my next read.

I loved the Peace War in a spooky kind of way. There's a sort of follow up to it as well. It uses the same tech etc but is set well into the future from the other.

I can't remember the title off the tip of my head.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I've just started reading a book called 'In the Miso Soup' by Ryu Murakami - so far it's a little weird, but weird good :)).
This question has baffled mankind for all eternity... why don't sheep shrink in the rain?

I'm reading "Dune" right now. I saw the movie and the Sci-Fi mini-series (which was much better), but I have never read the book. I am really enjoying it, and am really surprised that it is 40 years old!

Jen, would that writer be Nancy Kress? She's one of my favorite short story writers. If an issue in Asimov's has one of her stories, then I know it will be one of the best in the issue if not the year.

I recently finished reading River of Gods by Ian MacDonald. The huge novel was very, very good. At first, it started off a little too slowly for me as he started writing about nine or ten characters (most wered very interesting) who apparently weren't connected in any way but ended up connecting in one way or another. The story is about India in the year 2047. It's a country where customer service centers have been eclipsed by AI developers, legitimate and illigitimate. The book delves deeply into the topic of artificial intelligences and Indian mythology, spirituality, and culture including its caste system. It is a very well written book. MacDonald's style and prose is fantastic.

What got me interested in MacDonald's novel was one of his novelettes based in the same universe as River of Gods. If anyone is interested, read the The Djinn's Wife--it is a very memorable novelette and it's just beautifully written. Another short story, The Little Goddess, also has the same setting as the novel; I have yet to read that one, though I have it at home somewhere.

Getting back to Star Wars and reading "Betrayal" - the first in the Legacy of the Force series.  I started this a couple years back and got distracted and now I'm back on it.  Really enjoying it so for.

Legacy is a cool series with a pretty big payoff. Good choice Rico.

I have been thinking about wading into the Star Trek Extended Universe series of books.  Any advice on where to start?

Been wanting to get back to it for awhile.  Some of these Star Wars book series come out so fast it's hard to keep up.  Same with the Trek stuff.  Ahh, I remember a day I was actually able to keep up with both universes new book releases.
