I'm not a whinging kinda guy usually. So I wasn't sure whether to post this so early on in my membership to this forum...but, it has to be said!

One thing I love about podcasts is hearing people talking about something they enjoy with a passion. Whether you're talking general TV, Trek, Star Wars, Buffy etc....it is essential that to grab a listeners attention, you have a passion. Even if its a hatred to the said topic. If you hate it with a passion, you will grab listeners attentions.

In the race to be the first **insert new TV show name** Podcast, podcasts are being released by people who have never even seen an episode of some new TV programs. I'm talking about shows like DollsHouse or the Fringe. Before they'd even been aired, podcasts had sprouted up telling me how good these shows were going to be. That hype actually puts me off these shows and I go out of my way to avoid them. Podcasts don't have to be about any particular theme or show! I listen to lots of "general" chin-wag ones. What happens if you start the first Fringe podcast and realise after episode 4 that you don't actually like it!!?

How do others feel about this? Am I actually just turning into a miserable git in my old age? And what podcasting hates do you have?

ps That actually turned into a rant.....Sorry! But I do now feel better! ::)

Unfortunately when something becomes kind of popular (like podcasting), there will be people trying to grab "the next big thing."  So they will try and beat others to the punch and start a show about something very new.  I hope they have watched at least an episode or two.  The other factor is that some podcasts are done somewhat "professionally" by the people involved with the series.  The easy answer for me on any of this is just to not listen if I don't enjoy the show.  There are plenty of good ones out there already.

Interesting question. All the podcasts I listen to are about subjects I have a strong interest in, so I have never heard one where either I or the presenters didn't share the same enthusiasm. We have had a number of memebers here go on to make their own podcats on a variety of topics and they are are of excellent quality. They might be able to give you the podcast creation side of your question.

ori-STUDFARM

Thats exactly it. When we started our podcast, there was no question of what it would be about. I would have been ashamed and couldn't have physically made one about any other topic....well maybe a couple of other topics. But not many. People are so desperate to get there first, how can they be proud of it? Pride in your productions is surely a must.

Anyway, I think I justed wanted to air my thoughts and was also wandering if anyone else has any podcast hates......without specifying individual podcasts of course....   ;)

Rico

Oh - I forgot to say, this certainly never makes me "hate" any podcasts.  Hate is a strong word that I reserve for only certain situations.

With technology these days anyone can make a podcast and like you said that's not always a good thing. But like Bryan also said I just don't listen to them. My free time nowadays is always at a minimum and I only listen to podcast that I totally love. And unlike you I dislike the ones who "bash/hate" on things even if it is with a passion. I don't want to hear someone go on for an hour about something they dislike. That's why I like Treks in Sci Fi as Rico mainly sees the good in all things (like me). Of course you can't love everything all the time but he doesn't harp on it over and over, it's mentioned and he moves on.

As for making a podcast just for the heck of making a podcast. Ever since I participated in Rico's Treks in Sci Fi many years ago I wanted to do my own podcast. But there are so many people doing podcasts on sci/fi/geeky things that I love that I didn't want to be just be one of many so I waited... and waited until a topic that wasn't being talked about in a podcast format presented itself and I ran with it.. that's how I created Knights of the Guild Podcast, the official podcast for the webseries The Guild.

Wow.. all that I don't think I actually answered your original post. Yes I dislike when folks jump the gun on a podcast and created it without really doing research.. but like I said.. I just don't listen to those podcast. A podcast has to catch me in the first episode or I won't go back to it.

I don't enjoy the "hatred" ones, just used it to show that podcasts need an opinion or a passion. Hate ones are not for me, but at least they show an interest.

The reason it got under my skin was because I listen at work whilst driving heavy plant. I get through at least 60 hours of listening a week. And when I first started listening to podcasts, even ones that were rated 5 stars, I struggled to find a full week of quality and entertaining podcasts. I was downloading quite a few "geeky" ones, but found a lot of the hosts seem to have lost interest in what ever they were talking about. It caused me to lose interest in what they were saying. Thats when I noticed all the podcasts for shows not even out yet. Highly advertised shows that we were being told were going to be good. Just struck me that interest and entertainment can wain in the rush to be the "first" to a new topic..

Funny thing is though, my favourite podcast is just a couple of dudes talking about nothing in particular. The thing about that one is that they choose an episode topic and then one guy tries to get on topic and the other will talk about anything but....It's quite rude and crude and definately not pollitically correct. In fact, the total opposite of a podcast based on passion or strong opinion for a subject....

Perhaps I should be asking "What makes a good podcast?"

IMHO what I find enjoyable about certain podcasts is the hosts' genuine interest, knowledge and enthusiasm about their particular subject matter. A certain amount of open-mindedness is a good thing as well. Closed-mindedness annoys the heck out of me. I encounter enough abrasive and opinionated people in my daily life. I wouldn't waste space on my iPod with that sort of thing.

I'm with ChadH. I was just coming back to post pretty much what he said but as he's put it so well, I shan't.

That's why TrekSF grabbed me in the first place (as an example). It was as much to do with Rico's relaxed style and his interest in what he was talking about as it was to do with the subject matter itself.

Too scripted, too much reading wikipedia without any real understanding and I'm completely bored by it. I know some people need to write down what they want to say - I'm one of them - but as long as there's still the genuine interest behind it, it can still work well and engage the listener. Once it's written and read as a pure scientfiic churning of the handle to get another episode out then please, give up because I won't be listening!

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Meh, its why there is an option to Suscribe/Unsuscribe.  I only listen to shows that:

1) Make me laugh
2) Engage me intellectually
3) Aren't whinefests

If they don't meet the above 3 requirements, then they don't exist in my eyes.  Its sadly human nature to do what they are doing.  Can we do anything about it?  Ignore it and hope it dies quietly.  (Which many do I might add)

Its not like there is a limited amount of internet (yet) so there's really no need to "regulate" it.

Its funny but i have started cutting my podcast list. One due to time constraits and also because some I've not agreed with their behind the scenes antics. I enjoyed make it so until mike dawson was asked to leave, for me that lost the humour. Dwo has begun to attract me but again i was angered by the treatment tony received. But i'm giving them another go. Lately I've subscribed to tims appy times one cause he cracks me up everytime he chats away and also cause i'm getting an ipod, Antony who started this thread I've subscribed to his rd show. And of course my usual anomaly, tsf, thwy and knights of the guild are my first shows i listen to. Crystal recommende the definitive word podcast and that is really enjoyable. I've found (through my friends here and my own experience) that the key is be yourself. When we do waffle on we are our true selves. I research my work well but i tend to only use my pointer script if we waffle too much. Key to a good cast be honest, be true and have a laugh.

I cut one or two a while ago - they were interesting but not interesting enough (if you know what I mean). Then I discovered the iPhones ability to play podaasts at double speed and re-subscribed.

I now have an A list that get played at 'normal' speed and a B list that I go through in half the intended time. It works well for me.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I actually preferred MiS after Mike Dawson left, I was getting a little bored of him... but that's just me... I don't actually listen to any of Simply Syndicated's output any more mostly because I just got bored with hearing the same thing over and over. That's generally what puts me off a podcast, if it gets repetitive and the hosts don't make things interesting, or if it becomes all about the hosts and not the actual podcast theme.
This question has baffled mankind for all eternity... why don't sheep shrink in the rain?
