I'm not sure how to feel about this as I LOVE the original Poltergeist.. so I guess I have to wait and see.

Writers Tapped to Pen 'Poltergeist' Remake

Finally, finally we have bragging rights on this remake - can we now say "I told you so?" It was officially announced today that MGM is moving forward on their remake of Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg's classic '82 horror film, Poltergeist, which we broke the news on back in November of 2006. Inside you can find out who is writing the remake and then cringe a little with me.

Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (The Birds, Knowing) are going into the light.

The "Boogeyman" scribes are rolling out more children's nightmares for MGM's planned remake of "Poltergeist," the 1982 horror film that made "they're here ..." the creepiest announcement ever voiced by a 6-year-old kneeling in front of a static-filled television.

The original "Poltergeist," directed by Tobe Hooper from a script co-written by Steven Spielberg, miraculously skirted an R rating despite its children-in-constant-peril, toy clown-strangling, face-peeling, skeleton-swimming medley of horrors. The MGM/UA release grossed $122 million worldwide and earned Oscar nominations for its ILM-designed visual effects, sound effects and score.

The story of a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground and thus inhabited by a nasty spook earned further cult status when two of the child actors in the movie died after the film's release. Two nerve-jangling sequels were produced.

Horror thrillers are in Snowden and White's blood. The writers, repped by ICM, co-wrote the $46 million-grossing 2005 release "Boogeyman" for Sam Raimi and Ghost House. They've had a hand in the never-hatching remake of "The Birds" for Universal. And they've co-written "Knowing," a Summit Entertainment release directed by Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, that is due in March.

I understand when remaking an old film but now we're remaking films from the 70's ?  Given that the sequels to the original were below par, this decision is questionable.

1980's Mark.  1982 - see above.  ;)

Even worse.  Remakes need to be at least 40 years later. :D

You shouldn't remake a film PERIOD. You know this ticks me off big time. I'm a writer, well amateur film maker and you know i have good idea's and so does many other wanna be film makers but you know what happens, nobody wants to give you a chnace. Lets go and remake another film that doesnt need touching. How many more, jeez and dont get me started on the proposed The Thing remake (and yes i know John carpenters was a remake).

Well said Hawkeye.  The overall utter lack of originality in Hollywood these days is astounding (with a few notable exceptions).

So with The Thing....they are really talking about making a remake......of a remake?

Oh please, leave it alone. Poltergeist is a classic that does not need touching. Just move away from the cameras and stop.

Yeah they were on about it, thankfully the bearded one Kurt Russell spoke out against it. Fingers crossed they leave it alone.

I love the original Poltergeist. It really creeped me out when I first saw it and it still does a little but I do see that it could maybe be improved upon. I'm open about the possibilties for this one unlike some other films that I think should never be remade.

I am on the same page as you Ktrek.  I would be somewhat interested if they made a good ghost story and not some twisted gore-fest out of it.

LOL!!!!!!!!!

A remake of a remake?!?!?!?  Now they're just going WAY too far!!!

BOT; I enjoyed the heck out of Poltergeist- it was one of the few films that I could watch on TV, in the middle of the afternoon, and still have the crap scared out of me!  And there were all of the wonderfully memorable lines-
"...You only moved the headstones?!?" LOL

I'm afraid that if they try to remake the film, they're going to spoil it by adding a bunch of unnecessary hacking, slashing, and gore.
