SciFi Channel Brings Back 'Farscape'

Will be a 10-episode Web series

http://syfyportal.com/news423899.html

What happens when you can't get "Farscape" back as a full-fledged series? Why not just simply move it to the Web.

Fans who still have dart boards with SciFi Channel executives on it might be ready to take those pictures down as the network has announced it is bringing back its cult favorite "Farscape" as a new Web series.

No word has been announced on when such a project would be released, or how long each episode would be (or who will star), but SciFi Channel officials said they have ordered a 10-part series based on "Farscape" that will be executive produced by Brian Henson and Robert Halmi Jr. Just like the original series, this Web series will be produced by the Jim Henson Co. and RHI Entertainment.

The new "Farscape" Web project is the network's way of expanding its Sci-Fi Pulse video network that it launched last year, which officials says has been the home of more than 34 million streams.

"Farscape" won't be the only program making its way to the Pulse, either.

Also preparing to premiere on the Web network is "SciFi Tech," a companion video series to the network's technology blog that features the latest gadgets. It will be produced by Peacock Productions.

Finally, "Invent This" will be a weekly series that will look for the world's "quirkiest" inventions, and how they tick. It's another series being produced by Peacock Productions, and will also feature some of the "brilliant and eccentric" inventors as well.

SciFi Channel has provided very little detail beyond this news, but SyFy Portal will keep posting more details as it rolls in.

Farscape Revived On SCIFI.COM

SCI FI Channel will revive its popular original show Farscape as a Web-based series of short films on SCIFI.COM's SCI FI Pulse broadband network, part of a slate of new original online programming.

SCI FI has ordered 10 webisodes of Farscape, to be produced by Brian Henson and Robert Halmi Jr. and produced by The Jim Henson Co.

The series will expand the Farscape universe, but the network had no announcements on casting or premiere dates.

Exclusive: Farscape Producer Talks About the Franchise's Future

Ben Browder and Claudia Black courtesy Sci Fi Channel
Last week Sci Fi Channel made the out-of-nowhere announcement that the dearly departed cult favorite series Farscape would be coming back with all-new webisodes. In an exclusive interview, executive producer Brian Henson gave TV Guide some scoop about the upcoming revival, and also indicated that bigger plans for the franchise lie ahead.

A dozen new webisodes of the irreverent 1999-2003 live-action/puppet science-fiction adventure could launch as early as this fall on Scifi.com. Scripts have yet to be written, but Henson says the installments will be three to six minutes long, and “each one is a cool little cliff-hanger scene that takes you on a mind-twisting adventure." He expects some of the series’ actors and writers to return, but as of yet no deals have been signed. As to whether stars Ben Browder and Claudia Black will come back, Henson hints that their characters’ son, D'Argo Sun-Crichton, will likely be featured in the project. “The story will definitely take place in the Farscape universe,” Henson says, “and there will be some characters that the audience knows and some characters that will be new.” (All of the show’s Creature Shop-designed animatronic puppets will have to be re-created, he says, “because all of their molded foam skins have rotted.”)

Although webisodes may not be as glamorous as a TV pickup, Henson is enthusiastic about the chance to bring back the show in any format. Scifi.com “seems like a great place for us to play with new ideas. What we’ll be doing is trying to explore where the next generation of Farscape goes. By that I mean the next series.” That’s right, Henson hopes the webisodes will lead to a TV sequel.

Look for more news on Farscape's future to be announced at Comic-Con later this week. â€" Reporting by Ileane Rudolph

UPDATE: TV Guide just learned that Browder has talked with Henson about appearing in the webisodes. Browder's spokesperson says, "there's nothing concrete," but, if asked "Ben will absolutely try to make time. Ben has always been in love with the character John Crichton and the Farscape series."

Browder Eager For Web Farscape

Farscape star Ben Browder told SCI FI Wire that he looks forward to reprising the role of astronaut John Crichton in a much-talked-about proposed Web revival of his critically acclaimed SF series, which originally aired on SCI FI Channel.

Executive producer Brian Henson and creator Rockne O'Bannon are talking about how to revive Farscape on the Web in a series of 10 webisodes.

"At the moment, that's Rockne and Brian's job, and I'm aware that they're figuring out what they're going to do with it, but I don't know how far along in the process they are," Browder said.

The recently settled writers' strike put a damper on the plans, and Browder said that it's too early to figure out to what extent he would be involved. Browder said that he spoke with Henson about the Web series at last year's Comic-Con International in San Diego.

"They haven't come to me with any specifics yet, and I don't read anything into that," Browder said. "But at Comic-Con, Brian discussed it and said, 'Yeah, we're still figuring it out.' The writers' strike happened immediately after that, ... and a lot of things went on hold, and it will take a little while before a number of things get going again."

Browder was involved in the creation and writing of Farscape early on. "I had the freedom on Farscape, [and] I was in the writing room on a regular basis, virtually all the time when I wasn't on set," Browder said. "And so I had ... as much [input] as I could." --Mike Szymanski

I'm curious about this but I just don't see the budget being big enough for this kind of venture to be much quality. Every webisode provided by official channels have been a let down that I have seen. So, I don't have much expectations for this but I'm happy for the Farscape diehards that there show is returning in some form.
