yay!  More stargate!

Although "Stargate SG-1" bids adieu to the Sci Fi Channel after its 10th and final season, its spin-off "Stargate Atlantis" will get new life.

The popular sci fi show has been renewed for a 20-episode fifth season, it was announced Wednesday, Oct. 24.

"SCI FI is proud to bring 'Atlantis' back for another season," says Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for the network. "'Atlantis' truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it's a hit in its own right. With this season's exciting new characters and vibrant storylines, 'Atlantis' also shows every sign of matching its sibling's longevity."

In the "Stargate" universe, a network of ancient alien devices called Stargates allows instantaneous interstellar travel between galaxies. "Stargate Atlantis" follows the adventures of the human military and civilian expedition to the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy, discovering new enemies on the way to uncovering the secrets of the Ancients.

The fourth season, currently airing on Fridays, introduced two new cast members: "Stargate SG-1's" Amanda Tapping and "Firefly's" Jewel Staite. It also marked the temporary return of Paul McGillion, whose character Dr. Carson Beckett perished on the show.

The new season will begin production in early 2008.

I didn't really think Atlantis would ever be in jeopardy as long as MGM continues to be willing to make the show. I mean really what else does Scifi.com really have besides BSG and Atlantis now? And even these shows are not as strong in the ratings as they were, which means either a declining interest or other networks are providing better entertainment during those time slots.

Season Five?

YES! Season Five is a go. Get set for launch. After we heard the news (actually we heard the news just before it was published in Variety magazine), the writers went right back into the writer's room. They erased the list of episodes from last year, wrote down the numbers 1 through 20, stared at the blank spaces for at least a half an hour, and then went home. You see, it's pretty daunting. The elation that comes with getting renewed for another 20 episodes is always tempered by the fact that... there's 20 more episodes to produce! But we're excited. And employed.

I had the privilege of attending the mix screening of the SG-1 DVD feature "The Ark of Truth" at Sharpe Sound last Friday, which was a great time. The big sound mix studio is like a small theatre (not that small - like a miniplex theatre) with the very best sound system you can imagine. So for me, I wasn't there to give sound notes as the producers were - I was really just there to enjoy the film. And, as I told Rob, it's a rollicking good time of an adventure. SG-1 fans are going to love this movie. Now I can't wait to see Brad Wright's movie "Continuum", although that's still a ways off.

Tomorrow night, you'll see one of my favourite SGA episodes of the season entitled "Travelers". This episode guest stars Jill Wagner, who you might know from Blade: The Series, or Punked!. She plays Larrin, the commander of a group of Travelers who capture Sheppard for nefarious reasons. As it turns out, Jill Wagner and Jason Momoa are good friends who met in LA. And I had the good fortune, along with Ivon Bartok, of running into them and sharing some drinks last year here in Vancouver, long before Jill was cast for this part. I can tell you that she is a classy woman and a serious beauty.

Paul Mullie wrote "Travelers" and he was actually in the office today so I got to speak to him, albeit briefly, about the show. The other writers, it should be noted, are home brainstorming. Paul was on his way out, so I kind of felt like papparazzi, trying to get him to sit down and wax poetic. No dice. Paul did mention the amazing set that was built for this episode: the junked out space ship the Travelers themselves fly around in. The only problem is it was only used for an act or two of the episode, and in no other episodes. They planned on reusing it but it never happened. So keep in mind this is an expensive episode as a result.

I also asked him about the idea for the episode. He explained that, aside from the fact that everybody loves a sexy alien (especially McKay), TPTB have wanted to do a story about another technologically advanced race in the Pegasus galaxy for a long time and he finally figured out a way to do it. You see, because the Wraith are so dominant, they can simply destroy any race that gets too big for it's britches technologically. So the only way societies can develop past a certain level in the galaxy is by hiding or running (see Underground from season one, for example). So this is introduces another technologically advanced race to add to the mix.

Enjoy the episode. I did!

Stargate: Atlantis Season 5 — Who Goes, Stays, Cuts Back

When Season 5 of Atlantis begins on the SCI FI Channel, there will be some casting changes, increased participation for some and less to do for others.

One of the major changes in store for next season is fans will see less of Amanda Tapping's character, Colonel Samantha Carter at the Atlantis Command Center. Tapping will appear in several episodes more as a recurring guest star than a regular cast member. The decision was made to pull back her up front participation to allow her to concentrate more on her online series, "Sanctuary," which will be seen in all new episodes on the SCI FI network. With the absence of Carter, Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) will pick up more leadership responsibilities. Rumor has it he may even be in for a promotion to Full Bird Colonel, however, nothing along those lines has been confirmed.

We may also be seeing a little less of Rachel Luttrell as Teyla, at least in the early goings of the new season. As every fan of the series knows Rachel spent most of Season 4 being pregnant for real. By the time Season 5 airs she will have delivered her baby and will be spending some quality time with her new addition to the family. She is expected to return in full capacity later in the season, however.

In that regard, the pregnancy of course had to be written in for Season 4 and one who played a prominent role in Teyla's pregnancy, the Athoshian named Kanaan, the supposed father of Teyla's child, will make a visit to the show in Season 5.

There will be an addition to the Atlantis SG Team named Captain Alison Parker. She is military, tough and ready for action, but frustrated over Colonel Carter's slowness in making her a permanent part of the team. That will change quickly after the first episode.

One of sci-fi fans favorite actresses, Kari Wuhrer ("Sliders") appeared in Season 4 in the episode "Outcast" (air date Feb. 1, 2008) as Homeland Security agent Nancy Sheppard (Lt. Col. John Sheppard's ex-wife). It has been rumored that she may be back for a few episodes next season as well.

Michael, everybody's favorite Wraith (Connor Trinnear of "Star Trek: Enterprise"), will have a very significant storyline in Season 5, as well as more concentration of Ronon's (Jason Moma) untold story. The show will also get to see a lot more from recurring characters like Major Evan Lorne (Kavan Smith) and Dr. Katie Brown (Brenda James), Rodney McKay's (David Hewlett) love interest.

The Season 4 finale titled "The Last Man" is scheduled to air on March 7, 2008. The first episode for Season 5, written by Martin Gero, is called "Search and Rescue" and should start shooting in just a couple of weeks. The SCI FI Channel has yet to announce the official start date for Season 5.

Rico

Sounds like some good changes.  I really continue to enjoy Atlantis and have from the start of the series.  I'm curious on how they have scripts to start season 5?  Isn't the strike impacting them?  Do they use Canadian writers??

"Stargate Atlantis" begins shooting its fifth season soon, and with it comes the addition of a new castmember and an important milestone.

The People's Choice Award winner will begin production later in February for its new 20-episode season that will include the series' benchmark 100th episode, it was announced Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Also, actor Robert Picardo, who has appeared as International Oversight Committee rep Richard Wooley on previous episodes will officially join the "Atlantis" cast this season as he takes command of the Atlantis expedition. The team of military and civilian explorers use the Ancients-created Stargate to travel to the Pegasus galaxy in order to find other technologies left behind the Ancients.

In this pivotal season, change is the watchword. Friends are lost and made, while alliances are forged and new alien races are discovered. Wooley's unique leadership style requires a bit of an adjustment for the team led by Lt. Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and including Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite).

As previously announced, the characters Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) and the late Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) will return for a handful of episodes apiece as guest stars this upcoming season.

"Stargate Atlantis" is filmed in Vancouver, Canada.

I'm glad that the producers of Atlantis are not afraid to mix it up a bit and not settle into a formula. As much as I liked SG-1 it was a little to formulaic. It takes guts to unsettle things and try new things and cast changes. At least I hope it's for creative license and not just trying to find a way to increase their audience. At this stage of the game their audience is likely not going to change more than a point or two. I hope that even though Atlantis does not get the greatest ratings that Sci Fi Channel will renew them for a 6th season and 7th and 8th and 9th.... ;D

Changes coming for new season of Atlantis
Posted by Michael Hickerson on Tuesday, 20 May 2008

http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2008/05/20/changes-coming-for-new-season-of-atlantis/

When Stargate: Atlantis return to SciFi later this month for its fifth season, fans can expect to see a few changes.

One of the most notable will be some new sets for the hit series. During a recent press visit, reporters were given a behind the scenes look at some familiar sets as well as new standing set for a Wraith hive-ship.  (Standing sets are those that are used in multiple episodes).  The ship includes a "distinctly insectile throne for the Wraith Queen" and is  "more elaborate than earlier Wraith ships."

In addition to the set changes, there will be some changes to the regular cast.  Amanda Tapping is bowing out of the fifth season of the show to work on the recently picked up series Sanctuary.  Taking her place as the head of the SG:A team will be genre-favorite Robert Picardo.  Picardo is reprising his role as Richard Woosley from previous appearances in the franchise.

Also this season, Jewel Staite will become a full-time cast member as Dr. Jennifer Keller. Staite described Keller as growing more comfortable with her place in Atlantis this season. "She steps up to the plate a little bit more," Staite said. "She's becoming more courageous."

And Atlantis fans will be happy to hear that actor Paul McGillion has signed for four to five episodes this year.  No word yet on exactly which role he'll be playing–Carson Beckett or the clone of Beckett we met last year.

Finally, Tori Higginson who plays Elizabeth Weir has left the series.  Weir was initially schedule to appear in a recurring role this year on Atlantis.  However, Higginson will not be returning to the series according to reports.  There's no word yet on how this departure could impact several on-going plotlines on the long running series.

The fifth season of Atlantis kicks off later this summer on SciFi.

'Stargate: Atlantis' Canceled, Will Gate Into Movies

By WAYNE HALL
Source: SyFy Portal
Aug-20-2008

When its fifth season concludes in January 2009, "Stargate: Atlantis" will shift from a weekly ongoing series on the SciFi Channel to at least one two-hour movie on that network, then could join "Stargate SG-1" in the direct-to-DVD market, according to Multichannel News.

Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have been selected to write the movie's script. Just which cast members will jump from the television series to the film and on is not yet certain. However, look for the film to be released on DVD in early 2009.

"We're excited to tell 'Atlantis' stories on a bigger canvas," said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who co-created both "Stargate SG-1" and "Atlantis," in a statement. "The successes of the two original 'Stargate' direct-to-video movies 'The Ark Of Truth' and 'Continuum' have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both 'SG-1' and 'Atlantis' to remain vital as we expand the franchise."

Apparently, they aren't the only ones excited about this transition.

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, senior vice president of programming and original movies at the SciFi Channel.

This all takes place after word that the first several episodes of the fifth season have attracted more viewers, doubling the fans between the ages of 18 and 49, according to a new Turner Research analysis of Nielsen Media Research data.

Mallozzi, the "Atlantis" show runner, has stated in his blog that five years may be the limit for franchise shows in the future. He cited the fact that the rising Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar is becoming an expensive way to make Vancouver-produced shows like those in the "Stargate" family.

"Both MGM and SciFi have been great supporters of the show and, if you go by 'SG-1's' example, fans can be assured that the end of the series will not be the end of 'Atlantis,'" Mallozzi wrote on June 29 on his blog. "Like 'SG-1,' it will live on in longer-form DVD releases."

According to Mallozzi, both "The Ark Of Truth" and "Continuum" both surpassed MGM's expectations for home video sales. "Continuum," for example, ranked ninth on Video Business magazine's list of top-selling DVDs for the week ended Aug. 9. Of course, more DVD films with "SG-1" are expected in the near future.

Wright and Cooper are in the process of putting together a third TV series in the successful franchise. Pitched to the SciFi Channel in late 2007, it will be named "Stargate: Universe."

Called "Enemy At The Gate," the "Atlantis" fifth-season finale will be a cliffhanger, and will likely resolve during the two-hour movie, according to Gateworld.net.

Rico

Again - BOOO.... To you Sci-Fi channel.   :boxing

"....rising Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar"   what??!?!

They should really get behind Atlantis more now that SG-1 is gone basically.  Atlantis is just as good a show and this season has been great so far.  Sometimes I just don't get it.  These shows always make money back in syndication and DVD sales, etc.

This makes me kind of sad, not that there will be some movies, but I really am enjoying this series every week.
