Every once in a while I’ll write a script on the computer and I had an idea for something scifi and wanted to see what you guys thought about it.

My idea is kind of like a what if the future was like this kind of story where the earth much more populated and it was legal and widely practiced for parents to take their children to a doctor be uthenised.  Then at some point there would be a rebellion and an adventure.

I told this idea to a few friends and one said, Oh that’s great!  And analogous to what happens in China.  Another person thought the idea was about animal rights.  Another said it was about unborn rights.  I didn’t have any of these issues in mind but was impressed to see the same idea said something different to different people.  What do you guys think?  Is it too extreme or could it be a gripping adventure story?

I don't want to sound like I'm raining on your parade but that sounds a bit close to Logan's Run to me.

well.. I have a question.. why would the parents want to euthanize their children? If they didn't want them they should try harder not to have them or abort them at conception. Why wait until they are born and then euthanize them?

I've never heard of  Logan's Run, I'll have to look into that.

There would be many reasons for them to euthanize their kids.  First economics, the cost of living is so high that the loss of a job could make life to expensive for a family to live and feed everyone.  Next, the parents would be paid to sell the organs.  Also, orphans who were not able to find a home in a specific time would be put down as not to burden society.

A challenge that writers have is to create a world with challenges for heroes to face.

I kind of had the TNG episode justice in my mind.

And what if children only had the same rights that pets did.  That if you didn't want them anymore, take them in and have them put down.  Sounds like a very strange world.  Could it be a setting for a scifi story?

Geekyfanboy

Sounds like a horrible world.. but yeah could be an interesting sci fi story.. I think you need to come up with a better explanation on why parents would want to kill their kids. I'm not a parent but I know plenty of them and they would die for there kids. I can't see them wanting to kill them just because of financial problems or want to make money by sell their organs. I'm sure some parents would do that but the majority would not.

I agree that it's a streach for parents to be willing to kill their kids.  But people do strange things.  Like in China if a baby is a girl, and many famlies are only allowed one child.  They would be willing to kill the girl and try again for a son.

I think people are getting much more self centered than ever before.  Look at how celebs treat their kids, sometimes.

If it were legal, and the patern continues would a single mom be willing to do something like that if she meets the man of her dreams?  If she were a single mom and she meets the man of her dreams..... who doesn't want kids.

I agree with Kenny that you need a better reason for parents to kill off their own children. I think a more likely and reasonable scenario is for the children to euthanize their parents.

Hmm, I think it would be easier to buy if they didn't know what was happening to the kids.  But again, the idea of over population in Sci-Fi has been done a few times.  "Logan's Run" and "The Island" both come to mind.  Just keep in mind that the bond between parents and kids is very, very strong and primal.  I certainly doubt many parents would even consider such an idea.  No matter what the cost.

I'll try to work on creating better reasons to knock of one's kids. Of course in real life there are none!

The audience would look at it through the kids prospective.  Like, what is going on in this world?!  Then the audience would find out when the kids do.  Then they have to escape.

While I was typing Rico said something simular.  I remember seeing a horror movie called Parents where a kid's parents might be cannibals.  Then we find out they are.  But from the kids prospective is really creepy!
