My friend, co-worker and fellow Treksf forum member Archangela, AKA "Angela", had a birthday last week. When I contemplated what to get her, I remembered that she told me she saw a com badge that chirped when pressed, during her trip to the Star Trek The Experience last year. She said she wanted to buy one, but didn't have enough cash hand at the timeâ€"said she intended to order us each a badge on-line instead. We  joked that it would be funny to wear them to work, or during our podcasts. When one of us wanted to interject, we would simply press the com badge and the other would listen patiently  and respond in kind.

Well, Angela never ordered the badge for herself, so I ordered one to give her as a birthday gift. She loved the present...I bought one for myself as wellâ€"it just wouldn't be as fun unless we had two to annoy other people with.

Today, we wore them all day at work. Angela and I have a half-wall that divides our offices, we really don't need to to call one another, we just talk around the wall. We had a blast pressing the badges before chatting with one another.

*chirp* "Jen to Angela."

*chirp* "Angela here."

"Do you want to go to lunch?"

"Affirmative. Angela out."

We wore our badges to lunch too.  :D

We had to constantly inform our non-geek co-workers what they were for.  They think we're nutsâ€"and they may be right.   :D

Throughout the day Angela's com badge would misfire. I'd press my badge and respond "go ahead," to which she would respond "oh...sorry... I just leaned against the desk." Yeah...her com badge has a hair trigger. Be careful if you buy one for yourself, you never know what the person on the other end will hear if you unknowingly activate it. Oh, and don't drop it in the toilet...I hear that happens a lot to people with cell phones. I can see how com badge wearers might run into this problem as well.  ;)

We had our co-workers take a picture of us todayâ€"thought I'd share the "fun with com badges" with you.

I'm the one with short hair, in case you didn't recognize meâ€" just cut it last month.  :)

Sounds like you two have great fun together.  I must of never caught on that you both work at the same place.  That must be fun.  Love the comments Jen and that's a great picture of two of our favorite girl geeks!

Oh yes...we probably have too much fun at work. But we work for a water park chainâ€"if we didn't have some sort of fun we'd probably have to switch jobs and work somewhere else.  Angela and I have plans to win the Halloween costume contest at work this year...the prize is cold hard cash.  They have several categories including "best duo".  That's the one we plan to win this year. Angela's going to go as counselor Troi and I'm going to be some random Vulcan science officer (hence the com badges). We just bought patterns from Roddenberry.com and will hopefully begin to sew our costumes soon. I will post pics when Halloween rolls around.

Consequently, we're also working on this year's Texas Renaissance costumes, for early October. The weekends at Renfest are themed, and the days  that we plan to attend with our husbands and supplementary "band of merry geeks", is "Fantasy Weekend". I'm going as a wood elf...Angela is going as a fairy complete with wings. Should be fun. I'll post those pics too.
