Don't get the Core, the Pro system is a better overall value.  And if you have a good HD TV you should look at the Elite version too.  It has a bigger hard drive and HDMI output.

Get the Elite. Since it has the aforementioned HDMI, you can get the HD DVD player, and it will upconvert your existing DVDs to near-HD quality. It will also upconvert your games.

Anything less is just buying obsolescence.

sweet....but i can't get elite, i don't have 500 dollars, and no HD TV I'm planing to get a HD monitor (if its cheaper then a TV) and make it a TV thanks TO C-net I can!

Patience Padawan. If you can wait... save up the extra money and get the Pro system. That's what I have. I've been playing Oblivion and that game needs lots of space on the Hard drive to save games.

I agree with the rest, I would not get the Core, and would go with the Pro at least.

Locutus

If that's the case, Pro it is. I guess I was just thinking about what you could do with it beyond a simple game machine - I got a PS3, and am looking froward to the BlueRay DVDs and upconvert ability. But if that is not a concern, yes, the Pro is perfect for you.

Just to voice another option, while the core system is clearly less of a value,  if you are not ever planning on using Xbox Live, and don't mind a wired controller, then you might decide that you don't need the hard drive that comes with a pro system and a core with a memory card is ok for you.  The hard drive is mostly good for holding downloadable content from Xbox live, and playing backward compatible Xbox games via the Xbox live patching system.  Without Xbox live the hard drive would be used, at least for now, for nothing but game saves which would fit on a memory card easily.  There are some rumors that Grand Theft Auto IV will require the use of a hard drive on the 360 but so far MS has required that all 360 games run without one.

You know, I've been wanting to get a 360, and figured I might as well go for the Elite, but it's darn near impossible to find anywhere besides eBay. Anybody know a good place I could get one?

Rico

They seem to be in the Best Buy ads each week.  Have you tried there?

Don't have BestBuys over here, only FutureShops, and they're all out of stock...

Though the rest of Canada does have them, I guess they could ship here, I'll go check

edit: nope, they got nothin' either

I've been looking at the Xbox 360. I think I will wait for a few days, till I get paid... and If I have enough after paying bills and such, I think I want to get the Pro with 1 of the two games,

1. Star Trek Legacy.
2. The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II

Hmmmm.... what to do.........

That new star wars game pretty much looks amazing! (one of the biggest reasons for getting an xbox 360)

I was at the store yesterday and noticed that the Lego Star Wars II game for the 360 was only 19.99 now too.  Gotta pick that up sometime.

P.S.  I'm also noticing the Elite version seems to be everywhere now.

the_wasd_man

Yeah, I just bought my 360 a couple weeks ago. I decided for the Pro version since it was cheaper and, well, I couldn't find the elite anywhere. So when I go into the store the other day to pick up Guitar Hero II and Gears of War, what do I see? Yup, and elite just begging to be bought. Oh well.  ::)
