Virgin Buys Trek Franchise

In an unprecedented move, U.K. cable operator Virgin Media (formerly known as NTL:Telewesthas) found Viacom’s tickle-spot and bought the entire “Star Trek” franchise from CBS Paramount, which comes to a total of 624 hours worth of programming for U.K. subscribers, according to Variety.

“Star Trek” programming will be one of the main features for the new Virgin1 channel due to make its debut this fall. Also bought up was the new show “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” from Warner Bros., which will be seen in the U.S. on Fox this fall. This new Terminator spinoff series takes place between Terminator movies 2 and 3.

The new network will also be producing its own independent films. The first on-tap will be in partnership with indie production company Pilgrim Films with a movie called “The Real Exorcist.”

The thing is, The largest satellite operator is Sky and they have been in a very nasty battle with Virgin. Sky increased the costs of packages that it leased to Virgin and Virgin refused to pay. These packages include the channels that showed the most popular TV series, Lost, 24, many other popular shows and the Star Trek shows. Trek is on TV every day here in one canon or another. So this looks like a direct response. However, Virgin cannot win this war unfortunately, Rupert Murdoch has too tight a grasp on the media and with Sky TV, he chooses what most of us sees.

We are just going to have to bombard the UK with photon torpedoes from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

Wasn't the quote from Aliens enough of a tip off?   :jawdrop

Not all of use knew it was a quote from Aliens, and with the recent attacks in England I can understand where Trekkygeek was coming from.. since he is from England.

Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we talking about this for?
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Hudson: frakin' A...
Burke: Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
Ripley: They can *bill* me.

Come on, there are no such things as photon torpedoes.  Extremely few people are actually interested in harming England.

Okay PSIK, I uunderstand that no offence was meant, I wasn't aware of that quote. Things are a bit touchy over here and all the news is about people wanting to destroy my country, so please forgive my reply.  :cheers

I wouldn't worry about it, you get used to it. I mean, all of OUR news is that everyone wants to destroy the US, and has been since the 70s.

Cool!  It actually never occured to me that anyone would find that offensive.  I was just making fun of Brits taking over Star Trek.  It must be that Captain Picard guy wanting to control the galaxy.

I got in the habit of mostly ignoring American media long before 9/11.  They ignore things I think are important and exaggerate things I think are trivial.  I tend to assume lots of people do the same thing.
