I thought I started a thread about the upcoming Iron Man movie.. but couldnt' seem to find it.
Robert Downey Jr. was selected to play the famous superhero. Here is an article I found today.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. is quoted at Superhero Hype talking about how he's not afraid of hard work. "The suit for 'Iron Man' is so complex and does so much stuff that except for once or twice or from the chest up, I'm not required to do all that much," Downey Jr. said. "What I will do is a lot of motion capture so that the movement isn't just some random stunt guy. A lot of time I look at CGI and I'm like 'What's the reference for this? This looks like a cartoon reference not a person." So I said I want to do all the motion capture work, which is like eight months after finishing shooting, but as much as it as I can do, I will."

Was Downey approached, or did he make overtures to get the part? "I went after it like a greyhound after a rabbit," he said. "I loved Marvel and 'Iron Man' to me is the goods. To tell you the God's honest truth, I'd thrown them all away for 'Sgt. Rock,' because I really grew up on 'Hogan's Heroes.' I'm still addicted to the History Channel and the Military Channel is my thing, but Tony's the best because I could never be Sgt. Rock. He's a little bigger and more butch and has a cigar, I don't see it. Tony's a perfect fit for me, and if I was ever going to do this type of thing, I thought, you know, like early '40's. Great, because when you hang up your 'macho hat' and start directing or doing other stuff, it's not an embarrassment to be doing this in your late '40s still if we wind up doing three of them." Downey also said two casting announcements would happen soon, including Pepper Potts.

I gotta say personally I am looking forward to this movie and hope they can do as good a job as with the Batman and Spiderman movies of recent years.

Iron Man had to be my fave character reading the comics as a kid. I think the real reason was because he was a normal flawed guy. OK, he was rich and all that, but apart from that - he didn't have superpowers of any sort or anything.. he designed a tool to help him do what he wanted to do, and well hell I just thought the armor was cool! Wished I had one at school! :) I think also when the comics depected Stark's problems with the booze (not a problem I have) it made him definately mortal and fragile. I liked that. Didn't make him so cardboard as perhaps superman (for example) appeared.

Of course I know Batman, Spidey etc have their own flaws etc, and The Dark Knight really turned the head on batman, but for me Iron Man was always the one I loved the most.

So, looking forward to this one!

Never have been too into Iron Man even though I follow most of the Marvel line up of characters.  Robert Downey Jr. might make this interesting.  I'm sure I'll see it in any case.

Darth Gaos

I'm with Rico.  I know about Iron Man but I never really read the comic but he seemed like a really cool Superhero.  I will definitely see this movie.

FIRST LOOK AT "IRON MAN" MOVIE ARMOR

Entertainment Weekly published this morning the first look at Tony Stark's armor from the forthcoming “Iron Man” film. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, “Iron Man” began shooting in March under director Jon Favreau (“Elf,” “Made”) and is expected to see release in May 2008.

The armor, which is very faithful to that of recent Iron Man comics appearances, is designed by Stan Winston. According to Favreau, “Robert was very bullish on wearing the suit whenever possible.”   However, Favreau added that after seeing the heavy and restrictive costume, Downey Jr. may no longer be “such a fan of that idea.”

Tony Stark is definitely one of the more complex characters in the Marvel Universe. He's gone from near-death, which was why he built the suit - as a mobile iron lung - , to millionaire drunk playboy, to, currently in the Civil War storyline, a proponent for the Mutant Registration Act which put him at odds with Captain America. So Downey seems to be a pretty good fit for this.

Question, assuming this is on topic, If you are a Marvel reader:
Do you find it odd that, in the Civil War storyline, Captain America was against registering mutant powers, the equivalent of registering that you are gay or an HIV carrier in our reality, IMHO, Big Business in the form of Tony Stark and the government wanted people to register, and Cap dies and Stark wins? Did Marvel feel this is a logical extension of the story and will eventually be overturned by clearer heads prevailing, or is this an extension of the storytellers own ideals? Or was Cap dying the point, that when you force this America dies, and the only way to bring it back is by stopping this type of injustice, and that's how they'll bring Cap back to life?

New Iron Man Cast Photo

A new photo showing Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard in character for Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau, the comic book adaptation opens May 2, 2008.

The film tells the story of Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

I am not a fan of Robert Downey Jr. at all, but at least this film looks interesting and hopefully the casting of Downey won't be it's downfall.

I think this movie is going to be very good.  Top notch cast and I like the director too.

I read that Sam Jackson was filming his scenes as Nick Fury this week.

Locutus

OK, I have to ask - why are they making Sam Jackson Nick Fury? Is there some stipulation that he has to be in everything where there is a cigar-chomping bad ass? Why do they think it's OK to change characters that are just as beloved as the main ones? Fury had his own comic! They didn't make Spider-Man black, or Asian, or Jewish - don't change Nick Fury, or Kingpin, etc.

/Rant.

This does look like a promising movie, I am keeping my fingers crossed. I cant say that I have been really impressed with POTC 3 Spiderman 3 or the fantastic 4 2.

Well of course when at Comic Con they ask that you don't video tape the special videos but people always do... so check out the special Iron Man movie trailer made especially for Comic Con. It might not stay up long.. so check it out while you can.
