What do you believe will be the future of Home Video?  Specificly, what will replace DVD?  I don't mean HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, or anything like that.  Those are all basically DVD 2.0.  I'm talking about a different technology, something as different from DVD as DVD was from VHS.

I think DVD is here to stay for a long time, but what might replace it could be something like a jump drive.  At home, you would have a standard PC harddrive in an external case where you keep all of your videos.  You could plug into your PC or TV via fireware or USB port.  If you want to share a movie, you copy it to a jump drive and lend that to a friend.  Now, here comes the tricky part...  how do you enforce copyright law?  If you have the video file encoded so it can only be copied X times, that could be a problem when it comes to restoring lost files.

Well, as I mentioned, Apple already has a very workable solution. If you purchase an AppleTV device, you can stream content from your computer HD to you TV. So any content can be streamed wirelessly. Content can be purchased at iTunes and Apple is in negotiations to create a 30 day rental service as well, so you can own or rent. So you download from a provider and stream to your TV. Simple. :)

I've a friend who downloads SG-1 episodes from iTunes, and she says the quallity is not as good as DVD. :blink

Don't believe Bryan.  I'm convinced he is actually Steve Jobs in disguise!  LOL!  I kid, I kid.    :roflmao

VHS ->  DVD -> HD/BluRay  ->  More streaming and/or download type content.

Technology continues to improve, get cheaper, etc.  I would gladly pay a small monthly fee to have access to a library of content like Netflix or Blockbuster has.  The same way most pay a monthly fee for cable now.  While I do love "owning" my own copies, I'll never be able to have all of it.

One side note.  I also see a lot more average Joe user generated content coming.  Which is very exciting.  I love things that are alternatives to what the main networks and studios churn out.

I don't mind the future of home video being in downloads so long as I can own the video files. :spidey

Here's a question.  Say you've got 30 or so movies on your hardrive which is almost full... what would you put all those movies on to free up your harddrive?  Do you think we'll  have DVD-R's for a long time to come?  What will replace DVD-R's?

I don't like the idea of keeping movies soley on a harddrive, because what if your harddrive crashes?  There goes all your videos.

Bryan was making a joke as Rico indicated he was really Steve Jobs in disguise, and Steve Jobs wears a lot of Black Turtlenecks.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Well, I don't know who Steve Jobs is. :blink

Ktrek

And you consider yourself to be a geek? :blink

He's the co-founder and CEO of Apple Computers and was CEO of Pixar films before it was sold. As stated he seems to like black turtlenecks. Here is a pic:

Nice pic of Bryan up there!  Hehe!  Oh, going to move this to the Tech section on the forums.  I think it fits with the other tech gear talk there.

I've been hearing about holographic memory for years.

When I first heard about it I was under the impression the data would be in a solid crystal.

But it is like delivery keeps getting pushed back and back.  It must be a Microsoft technology.
